Double Gant Line and Lollar Family

The double line because our paternal 5-time great-grandfather, John Spencer Gant and our maternal 6-time great-grandfather, William Gant were brothers.

I have written quite a few posts about John Spencer's father John and his descendants, our ancestors, but somehow, I missed William's side. Time to make it up!

Both William and John were sons of John Gant and Anna Brantley. William was their eldest child who was born on 2 May 1732 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. About 1756, when he was 24, William married Miss Ann Wood, the daughter of John Wood and Martha Anna Britain. William's bride was born on 12 August 1736 in Lincolnshire County, North Carolina. The marriage took place in Granville County, North Carolina.

William and Ann had eleven children. Their eldest son was Giles (b. 2 August 1756 in Granville, NC), their third child and second daughter was Elizabeth (b. circa 1757 in Granville, NC as well). The two, Giles and Elizabeth are our direct ancestors (which actually makes a triple Gant line).

How come?

Giles married six years younger Elizabeth Armstrong on 17 January 1783. She was born on 4 Feb. 1762 in Mecklenburg, NC to William Armstrong and Margaret Woods.

Elizabeth, Giles' sister married Mr. Jacob Lollar (born about 1750 in Burke, NC) to Isaac K Lollar and Elizabeth Hellums. Jacob was a Revolutionary War soldier - he served in North Carolina.

And then, one of Elizabeth and Jacob Lollar's sons, Hugh Gant Lollar (b. about 1786 in Lincoln County, NC) married one of Giles and Elizabeth Gant's daughters, Margaret Gant (b. 1791, NC).

Hugh Gant Lollar and Margaret Gant are our 4-time great-grandparents.

The posters show clearly that both Hugh Gant Lollar and Margaret Gant Lollar had the same grandparent (William Gant) and great-grandfather (John Gant).

Hugh Gant Lollar Jr. was Hugh Sr. and Margaret Lollar's sixth child, the fourth son.

Hugh Gant Jr. married at the age of 23, on 6 Jan. 1840 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. His spouse was Nancy Bagwell.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Gant Lollar Jr. had five daughters and five sons. Their fourth child and second son, our great-great-grandfather James Wiley Lollar, was born circa 1846 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

James and Melvina had only two children* - a boy Joesph W (b. 19 April 1868 in Hopkins, Texas) and a girl Sarah (b. 1870). Melvina passed on 3 Nov. 1873 in Hopkins, TX).

Joseph W, our great-grandfather, married at the age of 21. His wife was Emma Pierce, the daughter of Jesse Pierce and Florence Edwards. It was in Marion County, TX on 26 Sept. 1889.

An interesting thing is that on Emma's gravestone the date of her birthday shows 15 March 1879.

If Emma had been born in 1879, on the day of her marriage she would have been 10 years old. It seems like a mistake, especially that Census records say Emma Pierce, daughter of Florence was born in 1876. 14-year-old bride makes more sense.

Daniel and Naomi Brown were Emma's mother's (Florence's) parents. Emma's father Jesse died before the 1880 Census.

The Infant Lollar recorded in the Census was most probably George Isabell Lollar, born 16 June 1900.

Joseph and Emma had thirteen surviving children. Ethel B. Lollar was our grandmother.

Joseph W Lollar (Joe) passed on 28 September 1931 in Harrison, Texas.

His wife Emma died three months later from heart failure, on 9 December 1931.

Their daughter Ethel contracted TB at the age of 58. She was sick for six months and passed away in McKnight State Sanatorium on 5 July 1954 at 12:40 pm. The Sanatorium was situated at 110 Pecos Street in Terrel, Tom Green County, Texas. Ethel and her parents were buried in Harleton, Texas at Smyrna Cemetary.

* I have been informed by a family genealogy researcher,  Mr. Richard Mc A., that Malvina and James had another child, Hugh Lee Lollar (born on 4 April 1872/died in 1959, in Oklahoma).

Wierzchosława Ludmiła, Polish Kings, Noble Men of The Holy Roman Empire and Our Direct Ancestors

Researching our direct ancestry on both paternal and maternal sides, I found quite a few kings, queens and noble persons of certain European royal houses. Each such discovery was quite a surprise, however, the greatest one was Princess Wierzchosława Ludmiła of the Piast House in our direct maternal line. Ludmiła's paternal ancestors are the very first rules of Poland including Mieszko I, the creator of the Polish state.

Actually, I first got to Wierzchosława Ludmiła's husband Ferry I de Lorraine, Duke of Lorraine, and our maternal great-grandfather (25 generations back). Then I found her, the great-grandmother. That is really great and very much unexpected!

Mieszko III the Old (b. about 1126/d. 13 March 1202 of the Piast dynasty - Duke of Poland and later High Duke of Poland. In about 1136, Mieszko III married Elizabeth, Princess of Hungary (b. about 1128/d. about 1154), the daughter of King Bela II of Hungary.

Bolesław III The Wrymouth (b. 20 August 1086/d. 28 October 1138) - Duke of Lesser Poland, Silesia and Sandomierz (1102-1107) and entire Poland (1107-1138). His first wife and our ancestor was Salomea of Berg (born about 1099/d. 27 July 1144), daughter of Count Heinrich von Berg-Schelklingen and Adelaide of Mochental.

Mieszko I (b. about 930/d. 25 May 992, Poznań) - the ruler of the Slavic tribe of Polans, creator of the Polish state. He accepted Christianity and the baptism of Poland in 966 + Princess Doubravka of Bohemia (b. about 940/d. 977).

Mieszko I was also a grandfather of Canute the Great, king of Denmark, England and Norway.

Wierzchosława Ludmiła

⇒ her daughter Cunégonde de Haute-Lorraine (b. about 1175, Lorraine, France/d. about 1213, Limburg, Belgium) married Waleran III of the Ardennes-Verdun dynasty. Waleran was a count of Montjoie, count of Alton and Luxembourg, and a duke of Limburg (a state in the Holy Roman Empire - nowadays the area of Liege province, Belgium). He took part in the Third Crusade (1192).

⇒ her son Henry V de Luxembourg (b. about 1216/d. 24 Dec. 1281). Henry was called the Blondell/the Great. He was count of Arlon, Luxembourg, Laroche, and Namur, and lord of Ligny.

In about 1240, Henry the Blondell married Margaret of Bar (b. about 1220/d. about 1275), the daughter of Henry II de Bar and Phillippa de Dreux. Margaret was also a great-great-granddaughter of King Louis VI of France.

⇒ his daughter Isabelle de Luxembourg (b. about 1243, Luxembourg/d. 25 Sept. 1298, Namur, Belgium). In March 1246, she married Guy de Dampierre (b. about 1226/d. 7 March 1305, Compiegne, France).

Guy was the son of William II de Dampierre and Margaret de Constantinople. Isabelle's husband was Count of Flanders and Marquis of Namur. He died in the French prison after the Battle of the Golden Spurs.

⇒ her daughter Marguerite (de Dampierre) Armstrong (b. about 1265/d. about 1331) - married Alexander Armstrong II, the first Laird of Magnerton castle. I wrote about him and the line which goes to Giles Gant, our 4 times great-grandfather, in a previous POST.

 Giles Gant
served for 12 months in the Revolutionary War (from 6 June 1781). He was Corporal in 6th North Carolina Regiment under Col. Archibald Lytle (1).

In January 1783, Giles married Miss Elizabeth Armstrong (b. 4 February 1762, Mecklenburg, North Carolina), the daughter of William Armstrong and Margaret Woods.

I have found the marriage license and marriage bond obtained by Giles Gant, with the help of Thomas Little, on 17 January 1783 (3). Who was Thomas Little, I do not know.

The Descendants of the First Settlers in America (which is an FB group) aided me in transcribing the above document.

"Know all men by these presents to that in Giles Gant and Timothy Lytle of the County of Lincoln and State of North Carolina are held and firmly bound unto Alexander Mar Esquire Governor in three hundred pounds specie for which payment will and freely to be made and done we bind ourselves our & each of our heirs Exrs. Adminst. (Executors & Administrators) firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 17th day of January 1783.

The Condition of the above obligation is such that where the above Bound Giles Gant th. day (this day) obtained a license of marriage to be celebrated between him & Elisabeth Armstrong of said County now if shall appear any future day by that there is no just cause to obstruct the said Marriage then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full free x virtue.

At the same time I learned that in the 1700s such marriage bonds were a common practice. In case if the marriage did not happen or any legal obstacles appeared (e.g. one of the about to be spouses was married already) the bondsmen lost the money they had paid.

I have come across the info that Giles Gant was a farmer and justice of the peace. I wish I had known more about him.

⇒ their daughter Margaret (Gant) Lollar married Mr. Hugh Gant Lollar who was born in North Carolina, then moved to Alabama. He was the one who suggested the name for the city of Jasper, Alabama to honor the Revolutionary War hero Sgt. William Jasper.

The Census of 1870 informs that then, Hugh G Lollar Sr. lived at his son William Riley's house which was in Township 21, Range 10, Choctaw County, Mississippi (post office Mounta Vista). Hugh's youngest son David James and his wife Amanda M + their seven children lived in a house next to William Riley's (4).

Ethel married Arthur Hollie McIntosh in 1910. Ten years earlier, he lived with his widowed mother and siblings in Justice Precinct 8, Upshur, Texas (5).

WWII draft registration record informs that Ethel lived in James, Texas, Route 2. However her husband was staying in Smyrna, Harrison County and he worked for Mr. Walter Bassum in Ore City, Texas (6).

Lura Naomia McIntosh Williams

Lura Naomia McIntosh was born on Jan. 3 1913 in Harland, Harrington, Texas. Her parents were Samuel Hollie McIntosh and Ethel B. Lollar. An interesting thing is that when her birth was registered, the doctor who reported the baby girl's arrival to this world, informed that her name was Mary. The family lived in Ashland, TX then.

Maybe the doctor did not know what name had been chosen for the newborn baby and just gave any female name for the record.

Much later, the information on how "Mary" was really called by her parents was officially clarified by her sister Cora Belle.

I have tried to find some information on the place where our aunt was born: Harland, Harrison County, Texas. Without any success so far.

The 1920 Census tells that Lura's Father Samuel was a log sawer. In 1920, the family still lived in Harrison, Texas.

There is a mistake in the above Census record. Samuel Hollie and Ethel had a son Vernon (not Vernona - a daughter - as listed above).

10 years later, Samuel Hollie worked as a farmer. Laura had four more sisters.

Lura got married about 1937 (?). Her husband, J D Williams, was born in Ashland, where Lura lived.

As you can see, the doctor who reported the Williams childbirth did not mention any first name. At least JD's parents did not have to straighten up anything later.

Lura and JD had four children: a daughter Shirley A. (born on 29 July 1939 in Dallas, TX) and three sons - Gerald (born in 1940), Donald Ray (born on 4 April 1943) and Chester Glynn (born 30 Sept. 1944 in Kauffman, TX).

Between 1935 and 1940, JD and Lura and they two children rented a place at Austin Street in Garland, Texas. JD worked as a laborer with WPA Building Constructions then.

The records also say that both JD and Lura had completed nine years of education. In April 1935 JD lived in Bowie, TX, Lura was still in Ashland.

An interesting fact is that they lived next to our paternal uncle Arley, his wife Elby and their children.  Maybe that was how our parents met? While visiting their relatives?

In April 1935 The Arleys family lived in the town of Vickery, in north central Dallas County. Uncle Arley was a car mechanic. Most probably, one of the four automobile repair shops in Vickery was his workplace as well.

During WW2, from 7 April 1944 to 17 August 1945, JD served in the US Navy. His rank was S/2C (Seaman 2 Class). (1)

December 1946 brought tragedy to Laura's family. At that time, they lived at 805 North Medora St. in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. The house no longer exists, though.

JD worked as a truck driver. 15 December must have been a snowy/icy day. When he was driving on a bridge in New Hope (nowadays within Sunnyvale), Dallas County, his truck hit the bridge, turned upside down while falling down into the stream. JD drowned. (2)

Laura was 32 then. Her children were 7, 4, 3 and 2.

JD was buried at Oakland Memorial Park in Terrell.

Laura never remarried. I do not know what she did, where she worked after her husband's death.
Laura Naomia lived sixty-five years, nine months and thirteen days. She died in Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas on 29 November 1978. Lura's burial was serviced by Anderson-Clayton Bros. Funeral Home. (3)

Jurita Elizabeth Ledbetter McIntosh

Creating this post has taken a lot of time and a lot of research.

When I was looking for some traces of our ancestors in Texas, I came across the information about Ledbetter - a town in Fayette County, TX. I do not know whether the place had anything to do with our Ledbetter family line and the relatives who moved from Georgia to Texas.

Our direct ancestor is Jurita Elizabeth Ledbetter who was born on June 22, 1857, in Georgia. Her father was (?) Charles Ledbetter born circa 1833 in Forsyth, Monroe County, Georgia. He is quite an enigmatic persona - so far I have neither found anything on his parents nor siblings.

Jurita's mom was Hannah E Hagood, born in 1839 in Georgia.

On Oct. 13, 1853, in the county where he was born, Charles Leadbetter married Miss Hanna E. Hagood. Here is a copy of their marriage record.

Since the document does not include any personal data (such as dates of birth or parents' names regarding both the bride and spouse) it seems to be more a guess than a proof of the marriage. Anyway, comparing the data available on MyHeritage, I figured out that Hanna's parents were Mr. Lemuel Davis Hagood (Haygood) and Ms. Mary Holbrook (Holbrooke).

I found no Census info on Hanna and Charles Ledbetter living together. It is all very unclear also because according to the data on MyHeritage Charles married Martha Ann Wallace nee Jefferson on August 31, 1865, in Forsyth, Georgia. If Hanna was his first wife, she must have died (?) before 1865 then.

Apparently, Charles, Martha, and their children moved to Texas by 1870.

The Census of 1870* shows that Charles (36) and Martha (30) lived in Precinct No. 4 of Hill County in Texas. The children who lived with them were:
Taylor (15), Cicero (14), John J (13), Lizzie (11), Ardelia (9), Mary A (3), Sarah (1).

And now things get complicated. Taylor and Cicero could be Charles and Hannah's children from the first marriage. Charles' second wife Mary Ann was previously married to Mr. Martin Luther Wallace who died in 1862. John J (John Jefferson) born 1857, Lizzie (Sylvia Elizabeth) born 1858 and Ardelia born in 1861 would be Mary Ann's children from her first marriage. If that is so, where is 'our' Lizzie, meaning Jurita Elizabeth? Was she raised by Hannah's relations after her departure? Or maybe Charles and Hannah were not Jurita's parents at all? Well, it is all very confusing. The first option - Jurita was taken care of by relatives - could have happened. Who knows.

At the age of 18, Jurita Elizabeth got married. Her spouse was William Daniel McIntosh, born on October 3, 1853, in Georgia to George William McIntosh Sr. and Elizabeth Ann Ballard. The young couple tightened the knot on October 6, 1875, in Upshur, TX.

Two years later, in 1877, William and Jurita's first son was born. The baby was called William Sylvester.

In 1879, on the 24th day of September, William's brother, little baby John was born.

The census records from 1880** tell that William, Jurita (Lizzie), and their two sons William Sylvester and John lived at Precinct No. 1 of Franklin County in TX. William was a farmer then.
An interesting thing is the very same census paper tells that William's father John lived with them as well. William Daniel's biological father George William McIntosh died in 1858. William's mother Elizabeth Ann remarried later and her second husband was John F McIntosh. I do not know anything about him (besides what the census says - he was born circa 1820 and his parents were from Scotland). Elizabeth Ann died circa 1880. It seems that after her death, John F moved to William and Jurita's place. According to the census of 1880, John was a farm laborer. Possibly, he helped William with the farm work.

William Daniel and Lizzie McIntosh had six more children:

George Oscar - born on February 9, 1881, in Wood, TX;

Louella Joyce - born on February 24, 1884, in Mt. Vernon, TX;

Hubert Dee - born in Texas on April 6, 1887;

Samuel Hollie - born on July 8, 1888, in Gilmer, James, TX;

Amanda Viola - born on July 13, 1891, in Upshur, TX, and

Maudie V - born in July 1892.

Jurita's husband must have died by the 1900 Census*** as the records from that time inform that Jurita, age 43, was a widow and a farmer. She lived on her own with five children: Oscar (19), Lula (16), Hubert (14), Samuel (12), and Maudie V (8).  But where was Amanda then?

Very likely, Jurita Elizabeth remarried later but I found no trace of that. On her son's (Samuel Hollie's) death certificate her maiden name was recorded as 'Gordon' which obviously was not correct. However, maybe it was her second husband's name? Another question mark here.

As for Jurita and William's children:

I have not found out who William Sylvester's wife was. However, he had a son Sylvester (born Oct. 8, 1911, died June 5, 1975). Sylvester Sr. had two sons - Sylwester Jr. and Dewane.

George Oscar McIntosh married Miss Alice Florence McQueen (born on July 28, 1891). They had seven children  - daughters: Roberta (June 15, 1915-June 19, 1922), Arlie Fay (b. circa 1922), Archie Ray (Jan. 16, 1922-Dec.30, 1966), Mozelle (b. circa 1927), and sons: William Marshall (Dec. 21, 1912-July 21, 1968), Clarence Allen (Oct. 22, 1916-Nov. 4, 1983), and Buford (b. circa 1925).

Oscar was a farmer, his eyes and hair were black. WWI draft registration reecord shows aslo that in 1918 George Oscar and his wife Alice lived at 1 Route in Ashland, Upshur, TX.

Louella Joyce McIntosh married James Bates Trotter in 1901. Her spouse was born in Bohnam, Fannin Co., TX to Mr. James B Trotter and Ms Sarah B Marshall.

Louella and James lived in Winnsboro, Wood Co., TX. The couple had four children: Lennes Walton (1902-1995), Vergil Reid (June 1, 1909, Perryville, Wood, Texas - 1928), Ola Bell (Feb. 10, 1913,
 Winnsboro, Wood, Texas - 2010, Paris, Lamar, Texas), and Thelma Elisabeth (Jan. 12, 1919,
 Quitman, Wood, Texas - Dec. 22, 2009, Longview, Gregg, TX). Louella Joyce passed on March 17, 1995, in Longview, TX).

On Nov. 16, 1911, in Harrison, TX, Hubert D McIntosh married 16-year-old Fannie Bell Anderson (b. 1895). They had seven children: Travis Orel (Oct. 18, 1914, in Ashland, Harrison, TX - Nov. 5, 2002, LA),  son J D who was born and died in 1916, Evie May (Dec. 10, 1917 - October 24, 1926, Harleton, TX), son (stillborn on Feb. 28, 1922), daughter (1922), Ena Elizabeth (June 23, 1924, Harleton, TX), Hazel Marie (Jan. 6, 1927 - 1995 Marshall, Harrison Co., TX).

According to the Census of 1920, Hubert Dee and his wife Fannie lived at Justice Precinct No. 16 in Harrison, TX. In 1935 and later (Census 1940), Hubert, Fannie and their daughter Hazel Marie lived at Chapel Hill Road, Harleton, Justcice Precinct 6, Harrison, Texas.

Hubert D McIntosh died on October 23, 1962. His wife departed on March 2, 1953. They are both burried at Smyrna Cemetery, Harleton in Harrison County.

Samuel Hollie McIntosh married about the age of 20/21. His bride was Miss Ethel B Lollar (born on April 19, 1895, in Bowie, TX). She was a daughter of Mr. James Lollar and Ms. Emma Pierce. In 1900 the in-laws lived at ED 10 Commissioner's Precinct 3 (south of T.& P. R.R.), Bowie, Texas. Later they moved to Justice Precinct 1, TX.

Samuel worked as a farm laborer. WWI registration draft tells that Samuel Hollie had brown eyes and black hair. He was also a man of bad health. In 1918, the family lived in Ashford, TX. They all moved later. In 1940, during the Census they lived at Chapel Hill Road, Harleton, J. Precinct 6 in Harrison, Texas.

Samuel Hollie passed on June 15, 1970 in Terrell, Kaufman County, TX. His wife Ethel ended her life journey years earlier. She died on July 5, 1954, in Sanatorium in Tom Green, TX. They are buried at the same cemetery in Harleton where Sam's siblings' graves are.

Amanda Viola McIntosh married Mr. John Marion Fried, son of Daniel Fried and Melissia Melvina Allen's. John was two years older than Amanda, he was born on Sept. 30, 1888, in Winnsboro, TX. Amanda's husband was a man of medium height and medium built. He had blue eyes and black hair. John was a farmer (see the document below). The couple had three children all born in Harleton, Harrison Co., TX: Cecil C (July 22, 1910 - Sept. 11. 1968, Grand Prairie, Tarrant Co., TX), Venis Elizabeth (March 13, 1914 - August 6, 2007, LA), and Vessie Fay (Sept. 12, 1919 - Feb. 19, 1989, Longview, Gregg, TX).

In 1917, John, Amanda and their two children lived at R F D No. 2 in Ashland, TX (WWI draft registration record).

Amanda Viola was widowed in 1968, her spouse passed at the age of 79, on Feb.13, in Marshall, Harrison Co.. She died when she was 89, on Jan. 21, 1981 in Shreveport, Caddo Co., Louisiana. Her body was buried a week later, she joined her family members who rest at Smyrna Cemetery, TX.

I wish I had photos of Jurita Elizabeth Ledbetter, her husband William Daniel and their children.

UPDATE

I have found out more about Charles Ledbetter, Jurita's father, and his ancestors. 

Thomas Ledbetter II, Charles' great-grandfather (9 generations back) was born in Bramber, West Sussex, England in, 1856. His wife was Mary Jane Hopkins of Botolphs. The couple's son Thomas III and his wife Mary Molissie Thomas + children relocated to Charles City, Bristol Parish, Prince George, Virginia.
