Arthur Norman Howard

It has been a while since I discovered any new family tree branches and connections leading to our direct ancestors.
Not long ago, while looking at my notes related to the people who lived in the Hill Country, I realized there was such a connection I had overlooked earlier. First, it was the surname that caught my attention. Howard is one of our direct ancestry lines. The place where that man was born, North Carolina, matched too. Investigating deeper, meaning the predecessors of Arthur Norman Howard, led me (7 generations back) to John N Howard (born in 1718, in Virginia). He was the brother of our paternal 4 x great-grandfather Stephen.
Arthur Norman Howard was John N's great-great-great-grandson and our 5th cousin twice removed.
If it was not enough, there is also a family connection on our maternal side, via the Sigman family. According to the family tree software we have our family tree on, Arthur is the 3rd cousin of an uncle by marriage (Richard Lee Sigman).

Arthur was born on 24 August 1875 in Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina.

1880, the boy lived with his parents, Edward Edmond (27) and Fannie Elizabeth (Gabriel) Howard (26), and siblings, in Mountain Creek Township, Catawba, North Carolina (1). The siblings were Gertrude (age 4), Franklin (age 2), and Chattie (1-month-old).

By 1899, Arthur had been in Texas. On ♡ 8 November of this year, the 24-year-old man married 17-year-old Mary Emma Cook. It was in Caldwell, TX (2). 

 Mary was born on 9 August 1882 in Houston, TX.

After the marriage, the couple lived in Justice Precinct #4, Caldwell, TX (3). Arthur was a farmer.
Soon, children were born to them:
♦ Norman Franklin - born on 10 January 1902,
♦ Gertrude Francis, born in Martindale on 19 March 1904,
♦ Edward Troy, born in Lockhart on 11 October 1906,
and ♦ George Martindale, born on 26 August 1910.

Tragedy struck - Norman died on ♦ 24 August 1918.

About two weeks later, WW1 was still going on and on 12 September Arthur was registered by the Army (3).

 

Apparently, after Norman's death, Arthur and Mary drifted apart and their marriage did not survive. When exactly they got divorced, I do not know, but on 14 January 1920, Mary (age 37) had already lived with Gertrude (age 16) and George (age 9) in San Antonio, Justice Precinct #19. In the census record, Mary is listed as a "widow" (4).

At the same time, on 12 January, Arthur (age 44) and Troy (age 13) still lived in Lockhart, TX. However, they no longer had their own house. The father and son were boarders at Mr. and Mrs. John Clark's household. Arthur Howard was employed as a farmer there (5).

The records read that later, Mary with Gertrude and George moved to Los Angeles, California, and in February 1921, Mary remarried (6).

♡ 6 July 1921 - Arthur married again as well. His second wife was Miss Caroline Mathilde Willmann (age 29). The two got married in a Baptist Church in Lockhart, TX (7). 

 

Carrie was born on 11 July 1891 in Hilda, Mason, Mason, TX. She was the daughter of William Anton Willmann and Christine Wilhelmine Leifeste.

Caroline went to school in Mason and was confirmed at the Methodist Church. Later, young Carrie worked at the Deaf and Dumb Institute and then, enrolled in a nursing school. The lady graduated from the Physicians and Surgeons Hospital at the beginning of 1919.

♡ 15 September 1922, 18-year-old Gertrude got married as well (8). Her spouse was James Lacy McGee.

 

8 April 1930 census - Arthur and Caroline lived in Justice Precinct #1, Lubbock, Lubbock, TX (9).

♡ 12 December 1933 - Troy married Lillian Motheral in Caldwell, TX (10).

 

♡ 5 October 1934 - George married Virginia E Yates in LA, California (11).

♦ 12 January 1938 - Arthur's father Edward Edmond died in Mooresville, Iredell, North Carolina (12).

4 April 1940 - Arthur (age 64) owned a house and farmed in Justice Precinct #1, Caldwell, TX. Caroline (age 48) was a homemaker (13).

♦ 17 May 1941 - Arthur's mother, Fannie Elizabeth passed away (14).

♦ 2 February 1949 - Caroline died in Lockhart at the age of 57 years 8 months and 21 days, after a year-long illness (15).

It seems, after Carrie's passing, Arthur sold the house and farm. Census 10 April 1950 - the man (age 74) lived as a boarder at the house of John A Schaper, a meat cutter, in Caldwell, TX (16).

♦ 7 November 1959 - Arthur passed at the Lockhart Hospital, due to heart failure (17).

Colonel Nicholas Greenberry

Col. Nicholas Greenberry, 4th Royal Governor of Maryland, was born in Lincolnshire, England on 15 Dec. 1640 to Nicholas Greenberry and Katherine Haukins.

In 1674, Nicholas Jr. sailed to America with his wife Anne and two children (Charles and Catherine) on the ship Constant Friendship. They settled in Maryland.

William Griffith (of Cardigan, Wales) who was Orlando's father came to Maryland in 1675.

The Griffith family was one of the pioneer families of Anne Arundel County in Maryland.

Orlando Griffith was a grandson of the second wife of Capt. John Howard Jr., Elinor McCubbin - he has been already mentioned in the posts about the Howard family connections.

Orlando's home was known as White Place. In 1728, he became a vestry member of Queen Caroline Parish, and occupied pew No. 8, together with Capt. John Howard and Nicholas Dorsey.

Nicholas Dorsey Sr.  (b. about 1690, Maryland/d. Sept. 1717, All Hallows Parish, Maryland) is our direct ancestor as well. His son Col. Nicholas Dorsey Jr. (b. about 1712, Maryland/d. 1780) Sarah A Griffith (b. 13 May 1718/d. 1 Sept. 1794), Orlando's daughter.

The direct family line which goes from Orlando Griffith to our great-grandmother Jurita was already described in the post related to Mr. Harry Truman.

Howard Family Line

Checking one of the direct family ancestry lines. I came across the missing link between our American/Texan Howards and the knights, noblemen of England. At the same, time I learned quite new things about the latter ones (who appear to be our direct ancestors as well).

There has been a dispute among researches regarding who Edward's parents were. Some say it might have been John Howard Sr. and Elizabeth Locke (see below), others find it doubtful.

Here the line goes directly to either Matthew Howard or Mary's mother Anne Hall. Some sources mention Matthew Howard as Mary's father, some say it was Mr. Thomas Chowan because Anne had more than one husband.

Thomas was Mary Boleyn's uncle. Margaret's uncle was Henry VIII. Allegedly, the two (Margaret and Thomas) married secretly in April 1536, without the consent of King Henry.

The affair was serious as Margaret was the next candidate to the throne after her uncle. Anyway, the king got angry, had both Thomas and Margaret locked up in the Tower of London and annulled their marriage. Thomas Howard died in The Tower prison on 31 Oct. 1537. Margaret survived the family drama - Henry pardoned and released her.

I have "found" Robert by accident, while checking another family tree branch, not really looking for him.

Some genealogists deny this family relation and claim that Robert was not born in Syon House, and he actually was the son of John Howard the Knight. However, if his parental line is true, there would have been reasons for denying the lineage. I am not a historian, so I do not have any proof on who Robert's parents were, but in my opinion, with the illegitimate children that Henry had, a legitimate son of a socially and politically inconvenient and unwanted union could have been possible as well.

Sheriff Albert McCauley

I came across the information who Albert McCauley was while searching for some details on the Texas Ranger W. J. McCauley. Although I did not find any family connection to the latter one, I am happy to be able to tell you more about Albert who appeared to be a lawman as well.

Albert McCauley was the son of Charles Leslie McCauley and Fannie Hicks. He was the couples' oldest child who came to this world on 15 Feb. 1873 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.

In 1880, Albert lived with his parents and family in Harrison, White County, Arkansas (1).

By 1891 the family moved to Texas. There is a note published in The Democrat (issued in McKinney, Texas on Thursday, 16 April 1891) which informs that Mr. C. L. McCauley, a Wylie citizen, visited Plano on 14 April 1891 on business (2). C. L. was Charles Leslie, Albert's father.

On 15 Jan. 1896 Albert married Miss Ola May Day (b. in Feb. 1877 in Georgia), the daughter of James Marshall day and Nancy Katherine McIntyre (3).

The newspaper clipping included below informs that the marriage took place in Parker, Collin, Texas.

 On 3 June 1900, Albert was probably visiting his parents when that year's Census clerk came to make records regarding Charles Leslie and Fannie's household. They lived with their children in Wylie (Justice Precinct 5, east part), Collin County, Texas. An interesting fact is that not far from their place, in Wylie, the family of our relative Lucillous Lee Gant was recorded as well. Studying the Census document I learned that L. Lee Gant was a blacksmith (4).

Anyway, why I say Albert was visiting his parents - because three days later, the same Census clerk came to Albert's home and listed Albert, Ola and their two children, daughter Lennie and son James Porter. Their household was in the same Wylie area where Albert's parents and siblings lived. Albert was a farmer then (5).

There is a mistake in that record - Albert's parents were born in North Carolina and Tennessee not in Arkansas.

Sometime later, Albert, Ola and children moved to McKinney. Albert was a Deputy Sheriff, nominated by Sheriff G. M. Eubanks (6).

On 3 November 1914, Albert McCauley was elected the Sheriff of McKinney (7).

Later in his life, Albert worked as a Special Agent with the Steam Railroad. In 1930, he was staying temporarily at the home of Mr. Luthur J Raley (Steam Railroad Inspector) in Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas. It is interesting that Albert's marital status was noted as "widowed" though his wife was alive then (8). You may say - so it is not our Albert but somebody else of the same name. Actually it is him. Ola McCauley, the wife of Albert and their children lived in McKinney then, and during the same Census of 1930, she was also recorded as "widowed" (9). maybe that was what the clerks did when a husband or wife was not living with their family. Very confusing regarding the ancestry research.

Arlee McCauley mentioned in the clipping was actually R Lee McCauley born on 24 Oct. 1902. He was a restaurant employee (11). John McCauley was George Garnett McCauley (b. 25 April 1908). Another mistake is the spelling of Lennie's husband's surname and his initials. Lennie's spouse was Mr. Frank J Felden and Vivian's husband was Malcolm Kinney (12).

Two other children of Albert and Ola's:
James Porter McCauley was born on 15 Oct. 1898, Dora Vivian on 4 Dec. 1904, Lennie in Feb 1897.

I have not any connections between Sergeant William J McCauley, Texas Ranger and Sheriff Albert McCauley. However, their fathers were both born in North Carolina so there might be a family connection there.

Edward moved to Virginia in the 1700s, he worked as a trader. Edward married Nancy Anne Langley about 1750. Later, he purchased land on Chenoweth Run where his three sons established their homes. In 1784 Nancy and Edward moved to Louisville, the latter one ran a tavern there.

The couple's children Delilah, William and Nancy Ann were kidnapped by Indians in 1782, one daughter Elizabeth was killed by Indians then. However, the three ones who survived were rescued and returned home - Delilah in Dec. 1783, William after about two years (4).

Some sources say that William's grandfather Mareen (Marin) Duvall was born in about 1625 in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, Bretagne, France. Others mention Laval in Normandie, France as the Duvall family estate place. Mareen came to Province of Maryland on 28 August 1650. He obtained land on the South River in Anne Arundel County where he established the family Middle Plantation.
