Henry Montgomery Dye

I have already mentioned Mr. Henry M Dye in the post related to his daughter Madora Ellen and her husband Jackson Harrison Bowman. However, since he was the first doctor and one of the early settlers of Plano, Texas he deserves more than a note in another article.

Henry Montgomery Dye is credited for naming the city of Plano (the name related to the Spanish word "llano" = plain).

Henry Montgomery Dye, the eldest child of Thomas Dye and Mary Duey, was born on 30 September 1830 in Wood County, Virginia. In 1848, Henry moved to Plano. The 20-year-old physician was registered by the clerk of 1850 Census at the household of Mr. Joseph Klepper (1).

At the same time, Henry's parents and siblings lived in Dallas County, Texas. Mr. Thomas Dye was a carpenter, Henry's younger brother John ran a farm (2).

When Henry was 24, he married Miss Sarah Skiles (b. 28 Feb. 1834 in Three Springs, Warren, Kentucky). The ceremony took place on 27 April 1854. Henry's spouse was the daughter of Mr. Jacob Clemens Skiles and Miss Sarah Elizabeth Alice Moore.

During the Civil War, Dr. Henry Dye served as the Confederate Army surgeon in Little Rock and Camden, Arkansas.

In 1870, Henry, Sarah, and their children were recorded during the census. The family lived in Plano, Precinct #5, Collin, Texas. Sarah's parents lived with them as well (3).

Dr. H. M. Dye was also one of the main founders of the Presbyterian Church in Plano (1871).

• Minnie M. born in about 1868 married probably Mr. Andrew Keyser * (?) abt. 1885,

• Lura P. (b. 16 March 1870/d. 5 March 1941) married Robert H Coleman on 20 Feb. 1890 (6),

• Mary Elizabeth (b. 20 Feb. 1873/d. 9 Feb. 1957) married Joel Lively Aldridge on 19 Dec. 1890 (7),

• Thomas Clemens (b. 29 Feb. 1876/d. 18 August 1952), a physician, married Emma L McKamey on 7 March 1906 (8).

Henry got ill and the family moved to Mason County with the hope that it would help the father of the family recover. However, it was his wife Sarah Elizabeth who left this world first, on 6 March 1878. After that, Henry came back to Plano. His health gradually deteriorated. He died of TB on 10 August 1878 in Plano.

John Bankhead Magruder And Our Kins

John Bankhead Magruder, the US and Confederate Army man, is another historic figure whom I learned about when in the USA. He is one of our rather distant relations/family tree branches.
The Mgruders were of the Scottish origin, and their name was originally McGregor.


How are we related to Mr. Magruder?

Indirectly, via Miss Evalyn (Magruder) Angel. John B. Magruder is Evalyn's 4th cousin once removed.

Charles worked as an abstractor, in a titles and deeds office. He made summaries of various documents. He lived with Evelyn and their son in Justice Precinct 1, Edna town, Jackson County, Texas.

An interesting thing is that despite the Census record mentioned above, the entire family of Charles' was recorded on 16 June 1900 as the dwellers of the same household in Edna.

Unfortunately, the marriage of Charles and Evalyn did not survive.  However, Charles Thomas Angel remarried on 18 March 1907 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. His second wife was Miss Alice Evelyn Coleman (b. 5 Dec. 1879, Texana, Jackson County, TX/d. 24 Oct. 1967, Houston, TX).

Wintersmith Lake, Ada, Oklahoma

As I have been told by Charles' descendant, Charlie's first wife's father allegedly made our man leave the area and told him never to be back.

Charles T. and Alice left Texas and settled in Ada, Ward 1, Oklahoma (1). Ada worked as a seamstress (2). Despite Mr. Magruder's alleged warning, Charles and family came back to Texas in 1918 as the last of their six children Elma Lorraine was born on 8 Nov. 1918 in Palacios, Matagorda, Texas. The reason of their return was most probably a family member's funeral.

Dr. Andrew Benjamin Angel was Charles' cousin once removed. Mrs. A. B. Angel mentioned in the news was Florence D Charlton who died on 29 August 1918. Besides the sad family circumstances,  Charles might have assumed it was long enough after the divorce-related life turbulences, and he did not expect any more problems connected with that.

Sadly, Charles was imprisoned. How come? I have no idea. A family story remembered by our aunt Lula tells about a male relative who was accused of stealing a horse and put in prison. As a result of that, the man died by hanging. It seems that could be our Charlie who took his life in the same way (3). Did it happen in the Dallas prison? Regrettably, Aunt Lula is long time gone, so she cannot tell us more about the unfortunate man.

" Just one correction; the Magruders did come from Scotland but were unrelated to the McGregors. We descend from the McGruthers and McGrouthers. We Magruders have battled about this for years and finally proved it with DNA. You dont have to credit me. The first Magruder to America was Alexander Magruder who was a POW from the Cromwell wars in Scotland. He came to Maryland in about 1650 as an indentured servant. Practically every Magruder in America is descended from him."

Jarrot Howard

Jarrot Howard, our great-great-grandfather, was born on 31 July 1810 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. His parents were Christopher Howard and Rebecca Hayes. At the age of 22, Jarrot married Miss  Nancy Walker born circa 1815 in Bowling Green as well. It happened on 14 March 1832 in Monroe County, Kentucky.

Two years later, on 30 November, the first and only child was born to Jarrot and Nancy's family. The parents named the boy William James. When he was about six years old, his mother Nancy passed away (on 13 June 1840).

Jarrot remarried pretty soon after his first wife died. On 26 August 1840, he entered the matrimony with Miss Lucettie Abigail Thomas, daughter of James Tolbert Thomas and Elizabeth Breed. The couple's first five children Mary Ellen (b. 9 Sept 1841), Samuel Tolbert (b. 25 July 1843), Elizabeth B (b. 7 August 1845), James T (b. 11 November 1847), and Harmon (b. 27 December 1849) were born in Bowling County, Kentucky.

At the beginning of the 1850s, Jarrot, Abigail and their children moved to Texas. They travelled in a wagon which was drawn by oxen till they reached Collin County.

Jarrot bought some land there. It was 320 acres on Turtle Creek in Dallas, Texas (which cost $3/acre) and some more acres on Spring Creek, Collin County (in that case he paid $3.50/acre).

Two more children were born to Jarrot and Abigail in Texas. First, it was Lucetta Susan (b. 5 March 1852 in Plano, TX). Then, on 12 February 1855, Garrot (Jarrot) Howard Jr. came to this world.

At the end of his life, Jarrot was the owner of 380 acres of land on Turtle Creek, 320 acres on Spring Creek and a few hundred other acres in Collin County as well.

Jarrot Howard died on 25 November 1854 in Plano, Collin, TX. He was buried at the Plano Mutual Cemetery.

Three years after his death, on 15 October 1857, Abigail married again. Her spouse was Mr. William M Forman II, son of William Forman I and Ruth Chenoweth. William Forman II was born on 7 September 1820 in Nelson County, Kentucky. Abigail and William Forman II had two daughters and four sons.

Searching the Internet, I found out that William Forman I  was the first postmaster in Plano, Collin County, Texas and Forman Elementary School in Plano, Texas was named after William M Forman II and his wife Abigail.

Aigail Forman passed on 20 January 1897, about a year after her second husband died. She lived 73 years, six months and four days.

As for Jarrot and Abigail's children

Mary Ellen married De Witt Clint Forman, son of William Forman I. If the date of her death (1964) on her gravestone is correct, she lived about 122 years.

Samuel Tolbert - in 1871 he married Miss Ellen Leach (b. on 29 February 1852 in Indiana to Mr. Owen D. Leach and Ms. Elizabeth Light). Samuel and Ellen had two sons Jarrot F and William. Samuel died on 4 January 1894 in Plano, TX.

Elizabeth B passed on 17 January 1854 in Plano.

James T passed on 8 February1869 in Plano.

Harmon died on 13 November 1890 in Elgin, Union, Oregon.

Lucetta - around 1875 she married Mr. William L Meroney (b. about 1850). Lucetta passed on 5 December 1883.

Garrot - died on 25 Feb. 1877 in Plano, Texas.
