T for Tai Chi

Some years ago, we joined the Taoist Tai Chi group in Dallas. It is an international society with classes run by certified instructors. There are Taoist Tai Chi branches in many countries all over the world. A member, while visiting any other country, can participate in the Tai Chi classes at the organization branch club for free. A type of "when a member, everywhere a member."

From time to time, besides a weekly class, we had an extensive weekend practice with 4 hours of doing Tai Chi, instructed by a teacher from another state.

 Taoist Tai Chi routine

In the Hill Country, we found a small group of Tai Chi enthusiasts as well. Although the routine we do now is a bit different from the one we practiced before, the beginner's period and advanced training we did in Dallas appeared to be quite useful here.

The harsh Texas weather, hardly ever have allows us to exercise outside.

If you have never tried doing Tai Chi, you should give it a try. It is a gentle form of exercising, beneficial for the health, and a good way to stay fit.

PS

There is a Taoist Tai Chi branch in Kraków, Poland as well.

My Texas Alphabet is quite a personal summary of our life in Texas including (among others) the places we visited, and the things we saw and did. The first edition of the Alphabet came into being in 2015/2016. This post is part of the Alphabet second edition - more entries related to us in Texas.

Red Outfit

The red outfit is presented at the Czech Heritage and Culture Center in La Grange, Texas. Next to it, there is a note which tells that 11-year-old Adolfina Bravenec was wearing it when she came to Texas. I wanted to learn more about that girl. That is why I did the research - its results are presented below. As you can see in the photo included below, the note contains an error. The first name of Slečna (Miss) Bravenec was Adolfina, not Apolfina.

Adolfina was born on 15 May 1893 to Jiři (b. 1864) and Maria Drabek (b. 1858) Bravenec (1, 2). Jiři Bravenec was a tailor. Later, more kids were born to Jiri and Maria.
In 1906, the family left their home in Lutonin (3), Moravia, and emigrated to Texas where Jiři's brother Jan, who came to Texas 3 years earlier, had already established his home in Seaton, Texas.
I have found a village Lutonina on the map of the Czech Republic. It is situated in the Zlin region.

Map data Ⓒ2022 GeoBasis-DE BKG (Ⓒ2009), Google United States

The map shows the distance between Lutonina (on the right) and Prague (about 3 hours by car).

The emigration records inform that Jiri's family arrived at Galveston on 14 May 1906. They had traveled on the ship SS Wittekind.
The Bravenec family recorded by an immigration officer were:

Jiři Bravenec, age 41,
Maria Bravenec, age 46,
Adolfina Bravenec, age 11
Franz Bravenec, age 8,
Josef Bravenec, age 4
Frantiska Bravenec, age 3.

The father of the family brought $250 to Texas (4,5,6,7,8, 9, 10). They were going to Seaton, Bell County, where Jiři's brother Jan lived.

Other members of the Bravenec family who came to Texas from the village of Zadveřice, Moravia in 1903 were:

  • Jan Bravenec, age 10, left Bremen on 13 December 1902 and traveled on the ship Frankfurt. Whether he was accompanied by friends or family of a different surname, I do not know. The ship reached Galveston on 7 January 1903. The boy was hosted by a friend who lived in Austin County, Texas (11).
  • His parents and sister joined him a few months later. It was Adolfina's uncle Jan (age 37), farmer of Zadveřice, his wife Anna (age 40), and their 8-year-old daughter Anna. The three departed Bremen on 19 September 1903 on the vessel SS Breslau and got to Galveston on 8 October of the same year. The family was going to stay in Nelsonville, Bell County, at the home of Anna Bravenec's cousin Mr. Joe Sebesta (12,13,14,15).

Note: The village of Zadveřice is not far from Lutonina (where Adolfina and her family lived), about 9 minutes by car.

Map data Ⓒ2022 United States

The 1910 Census found Adolfina, her parents, and her siblings in Bell county. Her father Jiři, a farmer, had become. The names of all the family members had been anglicized as well (16).

Four years later, on 7 November 1914, 21-year-old Adolfina married a three year older Mr. Frank Mikeska (17), son of Joseph. The Mikeška family  also came from the village of Zadveřice, mentioned above.

Soon, on 12 November 1916, a son, Frank Joseph, was born to the couple (18).

The 1920 Census found the family in Justice Precinct #5, Bell County, TX (19). Soon after the census, a daughter, Vlasta Adele, was born to Adolfina and Frank on 17 August 1921 (20).

1925 - a wedding in the family - Adolfina's brother Frank married Miss Fannie Rose Odstričil.
1927 - the funeral of Adolfina's aunt Anna Bravenec. The lady died on 28 October of that year (21).
1929 - Adolfina's youngest sibling Frances married Mr. Rudolph Louis Lastovica.

The years were passing by. Frank and Adolfina paid off their house. Frank farmed. When Frank Joe grew old enough to help his father, he worked on the family farm as well (22).

Events merry in nature, such as weddings, wedding anniversaries, and birthdays were intervened with deaths that happened from time to time. As for the latter ones, I only researched three family surnames  Bravenec, Sebesta (Šebesta), and Mikeska in that matter. Life still seemed to be balanced regarding the number of happy and sad events. Children were being born into the family, some relatives passed.

The death record from the years 1930-1934 is given for comparison, to indicate the difference between the number of deaths (including the premature ones caused by accidents and other tragic circumstances) during that period and the later year 1935-1939.

The death of two close relatives in the same year - mother and brother - must have been to Adolphina a heart breaking blow. And there was no rest from the pain, no relief. The Grim Reaper was not leaving the family and not giving Adolfina a break in her suffering.

  • Anna Bravenec died of cancer on 19 September 1936 (22) in the home of her daughter Anna (Mrs. Herman Krause). She was in her mid-eighties. How was Anna related to Adolfina I am not sure. Jan Bravenec who was born in 1842/died in 1900, was Anna's husband. The couple came to Texas with their four children in 1880. Two of the children died when they were infants. The surviving children were Jan, Thomas, Stephen, Anna (born 1883), and Alvina (Mrs. Emil Ueckert), born in 1887 (80, 81). 🕀

  • 14 December 1939 - death visited the family again.  It was then, 89-year-old  Hedwig Johanna Nikel nee Sebesta, the spouse of John Nikel,  who left this world (128).

During all those years, as in every family, there were also joyful celebrations and healthy babies being born. However, the great number of deaths must have darkened and obscured the happy occasions. Obviously, Adolfina did not attend all those funerals, but the news about the departed relations certainly reached her.

Considering the fact that I researched three surnames only, most likely, there were even more deaths in the family. How much the lady suffered only she knew. The death of two closest relatives - mother and brother in the same year. Death was coming again and again. So much pain. Again and again. It could break anybody, especially a more sensitive person. All those deaths - including the passing of her mother Marie and brother Joe, in the same year 1935.

21 January 1940 was the last day of Adolfina's life. She died in the Scott & White hospital in Temple at 2 PM (129). On the day of her death, Adolfina was 48 years, 8 months, and 6 days. She had lived in Texas for 35 years.

B for Bosun

A few decades ago, group singing was a popular pastime in Poland. Everybody knew certain traditional songs, which not necessarily were played on the radio, but people did enjoy singing them when they got together. Some songs were more popular and well known in the north of the country only as they were related to the sea.

One of them was "Bosman" ("Bosun" in Eng.). I never knew who its author was till these days when I did some research. It was written by Jerzy Porębski. However, I did not find the information when exactly it was created. Well, ages ago.

My free translation
"On the deck, since the morning,
The bosun is always heard
When he needlessly screams all the time.
Even if you hurt your hands,
He will always rebuke you and say:
"It is done badly".

Boys, what has happened to you?
When at the cauldron, then everybody hurries.
It's not a tub, not a pan,
You should know from your childhood,
It is a Polish warship.

But is sometimes happens,
That the bosun daydreams,
Every bosun has their dreams.
If you ask him the,
He brings his squeezebox,
Sits on the stern and plays.
(...)"

The song has many verses, but we (the scouts) most often sang only four. Much later, I discovered that the next one tells what the bosun fantasized about - it was the sea, the abyss, the fights he experienced, girls of Bombay who love and kiss hard. Probably, the latter was a reason why we did not sing that part.
On the other hand, the bosun also dreamed about Gdynia, the port which he loved so very much.

Traditional version of the song - the author Jerzy Porębski sings in the video

More modern and lively version of "Bosun"

PS
"My Polish Alphabet" is about things, people, and places that come to my mind when I think of Poland.

One Birth And Baptism Certificate

Last month we visited the exhibition mentioned in the previous post. It was all about the History of the Lutheran Church. Among the exhibits, there were quite a lot of various old certificates.

This birth and baptism certificate (Geburts und Tauf Schein) caught my attention not only because it is so pretty, but also because of the birth date on it: 11 December. I know somebody else who was born on that day, more than a hundred years later.

The quote at the top comes from Matthew 28:19 (Luther Bibel 1545):
"Darum gehet hin und lehret alle Völker und taufet sie im Namen des Vaters und des Sohnes und des heiligen Geis(tes)"/
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit".

The certificate states that the spouses Elias Rode and his wife nee Wendel were parents of the girl born on 11 December 1882 in Cherry Springs, Gillespie County, TX. The baby girl was baptized by Pastor D. Rode. She was named Rebekka Elisebetha Leonora Alvina. The godparents were Lorenz Wendel, Adolph Willmen, Elisebetha Wendel, and Maria Wendel.

D. (Dietrich) Rode was Elias' father. 20-year-old then Dietrich left Bremen with his family on 20 December 1844, they traveled on the ship Apollo (1) and came to Texas. At first, young Dietrich and his folks were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg. The man became a prominent rancher in the Cherry Spring area. During the Civil War times, Dietrich and a few other previous parishioners of Zion started religious meetings at Dietrich's house. He was granted a preacher's license by the war military government and served as a minister in the Cherry Spring neighborhood. The services were held in the hall of Mr. Rode's house (2).

Elias married Mathilde Wendel when he was 27. It was on 30 June 1881, about a year before Rebekka was born (3).

The girl lived with her parents and siblings (Sarah, Sem, Seth, Enos, Regu, Thirza, Elam, Aaron, Obediah, Elie, and Artie) in Justice precinct #4, Gillespie County, TX.

Rebekka was married to William Friedrich Lehmann on 8 May 1918 (4). She was 19, her spouse was about 21 years older.

William was a widowed stock rancher. His first wife Sophie Light passed at the age of 28 (5). The man was also the brother of two ladies mentioned on this blog before: Wilhelmina (who married John H Keyser) and Phillipena (wife of Henry Montgomery Dye).

Anyway, on the day of her marriage, Rebekka became a mother of 4 (21-year-old Maurice John, 20-year-old Alma, 17-year-old Augusta, and 13-year-old Gus).

In the same year, on 5 June, Maurice Lehmann had been drafted and enlisted (on 3 September) into the army. At that time, the young man lived in San Antonio, at 409 Presa St., and worked at Brooks Field (6,7). Luckily, the war ended and Maurice never had to be deployed overseas. He was honorably discharged at demobilization on 9 June 1919 (8). Rebekka's stepson came back home.

Alma was married to Mr. John Ziriax (9), the son on William Ziriax and Katherine Wartenbach.

On 30 October, Rebekka and William's first daughter Gerda was born (10).

In 1920, the census recorded the family in Loyal Valley, Mason County, TX. William Lehman was 58, Rebekka 37, Maurice 22, Augusta 22, Gustave 13, and Gerda was a few months old (11).

Soon, Augusta became a wife and left the family home as well. Her husband was Mr. Herbert H Hoffmann (12), the son of Karl Louis Hofmann and Ellen Keller. Maurice married Nancy Saunders. His in-laws were Mr. Joseph and Ms. Annie Schuetz Saunders.

The second daughter of Rebekka, Esther, was born on 5 October 1923 (13).

Two years passed and mourning came - Mathilda Rode, Rebekka's mother passed on 19 June 1925 (14).

By 1930 Rebekka and William Lehmann had lived with their two daughters Gerda and Esther. At that time William's 70-year-old brother Herman was recorded at their household as well (15).

Decades ago, in 1870, both Herman and Willie were captured by Apaches. The latter managed to escape, the older brother lived for about 9 years with the Indians.

Gus had moved to Merzton town in Irion County. He rented a room at the John F Vardy family /census 1930 (16).

Brother Herman died of heart failure on 2 February 1932 (17). He was 71 years old.

More about Herman and his life was written in the article here.

At the end of April 1940, Rebekka, William, and their two daughters were recorded during the census at their home in Llano Valley. William was 78, Rebekka 57, Gerda 20, and Esther 16 (18).

William Lehmann was the youngest child of his parents (Johann Moritz Lehmann and Agusta Johanna Adams). While children were being born to Rebekka's stepchildren, all of Willie's siblings preceded him in death.

Sister Caroline Phillipena passed on 24 January 1937.

A few weeks later, death knocked on the family's door again when Rebekka's father, Elias Rode, died on 3 February 1937 (19).

A happier event came when Gerda married Mr. Kothamn Lansing in 1940 (20), the son of Heinrich Daniel Kothmann and Lina Rosa Loeffler. Sadly, in the same year, the family attended another funeral - brother Gustav Adolph Lehmann passed over on 29 March 1940.

The first child of Rebekka and William's daughter Gerda's was born on 13 December 1942 (21), two days after Rebekka's 60th birthday. It was a baby girl, she was named Carol Ann.

The second child was born to Gerda and Lansing Kothmann eight years later, on 28 January 1950. The boy's name was Lester Lansing.

William Friedrich Lehmann's last day of life came a few weeks before his 89th birthday. The man died of heart failure/senility on 11 September 1851. It happened in Fredericksburg. The man had been treated in Fredericksburg hospital for 20 days (22).

In July 1951, Carol Ann, Rebekka's granddaughter, got sick. She was taken to the Breckenridge hospital in Austin. On 18the day of the month, the girl was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis. Tragically, Carol passed after two days. She was 14 years, 7 months, and 14 days (23). Carol's body was buried in the Gooch Cemetery in Mason (24).

Rebekka possibly lived with her daughter Esther. The mother died on 11 September 1961, exactly ten years after her husband's passing (25). In two months Rebekka Lehmann would have been 78. She was survived by her children and many grandchildren.

PS

When in Poland, I had a student whose name was Rode and a co-worker by the name of Lehmann. According to the site polskienazwiska.pl which counts the surnames existing presently in Poland, nowadays about 588 persons of the surname Rode live in the country and 2574 Lehmann people as well.
