My Favorite Carols

Christmas in Poland is a big family thing. The main celebrations start on Christmas Eve, with the festive supper and gathering. Traditionally, on the Christmas Eve table you can find 12 dishes, which symbolize 12 months of the new coming year, and 12 disciples as well. Before the meal begins people share holy wafer "opłatek", wishing each other all the best. It is also the time to forgive and to be reconciled with the ones whom we have had argued with.

After the meal, presents from Santa are opened. Later, some families sing Christmas carols together. The carols are religious songs, not pop tunes of course. We used to sing them after the Christmas Eve supper in my home when I was little. We often played a vinyl album by Mazowsze as well. You can see the folk song and dance group in the videos below.

When I listen to the Polish carols, they bring to my mind all the Christmas scents and flavors of my childhood: poppy seed log - so delicious (and time-consuming considering how long it took to make the logs), noodles with poppy seeds, raisins, almonds, and honey, mushroom soup, and many more......

Here are my favorite Polish carols + a Polish version of Stille Nacht/ Silent Night.

Lulajże, Jezuniu / Sleep, Little Jesus (lullaby) - composed/written in the 17th century

Wśród nocnej ciszy / In the Silence of the Night (18th/19th century)

Dzisiaj w Betlejem / Today in Bethlehem - author unknown

Gdy śliczna Panna  / When the Lovely Virgin Mary (music and lyrics written at the beginning of the 18th century).

Przybieżeli do Betlejem / Shepherd Have Come to Bethlehem (early 17th century)

Cicha noc / Silent Night - I like this Austrian carol, also in Polish - no matter in what language it is sung. Lyrics by Joseph Mohr, music composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber.

English Carols

During all those years when I worked as a teacher of English as a second language, every Christmas, besides various Christmas vocabulary, I also taught my students several Christmas songs/ carols. Most often they were also listening comprehension exercises - before we sang them, first, students listened to the lyrics and found what the missing words (on their exercise sheets) were. The ones which we listened to and sang in the classroom were:
  • Jingle Bells - of course,
  • Away in a Manger,
  • Deck the Halls,
  • White Christmas,
  • Happy Xmas by John Lennon,
  • The First Noel,
  • Feliz Navidad,
  • We Wish You a Merry Christmas,
  • Santa Claus is Coming to Town,
  • Mary's Boy Child,
  • Little Drummer Boy,
  • Auld Lang Syne.
The kids enjoyed them and I like them too. However, I listened to my favorite English carols at home mostly. These days I also love singing them at church.

O Come, All Ye Faithful - music and lyrics by Frederick Oakeley, 1841.

Joy to the World - first published in 1719

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing - first published in 1739, music by F. Mendelssohn

Silent Night - English version

Besides them, I also like

O Tannenbaum - O Christmas Tree which is a German carol. Its modern lyrics, based on the 16th century Silesian folk song, were written in 1824 by Ernst Anschütz.

Merry Christmas!

Our November Visit in Poland

It is high time I wrote something about our trip to Poland. At the end of November, we went to my home city in the country to visit my mom and the place where I am from.

We met with family and friends - it was our early Christmas visit as well. Everybody showered us with presents and treated us with wonderful food. Such a good time!

The weather was quite pretty for this time of the year in the north of Europe so, besides walking around in my city, we also went to some places of interest - the medieval castle built by Teutonic Knights in Malbork - the largest brick castle in the world and the Stutthof concentration camp museum, in Sztutowo.

Malbork Castle - part of the outer walls

Stutthof - concentration camp museum - Death Gate

I am going to write more about the two places in January.

In Gdansk, where we met my best friend, we went to Solidarity museum, visited the amber museum, and the 16th-century prison.

Solidarity museum in Gdańsk- part of the exhibition

Solidarity museum - replica of the Gdańsk shipyard gate

The time we spent with the friend of mine was truly wonderful. Thank you, Krysia!

My city had changed a bit - some stores and restaurants went out of business, some new ones were open. In one of them, an Italian pizza place, we were hosted by some family members. Well, we had never eaten such kind of pizza before. It was different but delicious indeed!

Friday - great evening (with Monia & Lubo) and talks again!

Both of us enjoyed seeing the view over the Stone Mountain again. The new electric car which had been built and is operated by the City took us (for free) to the top of the Mountain - previously we would have had to use kilometers of stairs.

Gdynia - view from Stone Mountain / Kamienna Góra

Each day of our visit in Poland was interesting and the time there passed by so quickly. Every day we did some sightseeing (we did a lot of walking), every evening it was family time. Each day was packed with cultural experiences and various kind of enjoyment. Finally, I was able to buy myself a few things which are not available in the States such as my favorite brands of European cosmetics for example.

Mom, thanks for everything! We had such a lovely time. Thank you for everything you do.

We very much enjoyed the entire stay only the travel was a bit oppressive - 24 hours and three plane connections from Dallas to Gdansk and then, the same 24-hour trip back home. Wish Poland was closer to Texas!

I am very glad we did our Christmas visit during the Thanksgiving week. If we had gone last Saturday, due to the recent Arctic weather front, we would possibly be stranded at the airport in Chicago, getting nervous and wasting our vacation time, waiting for the next flight to Germany. Obviously, it would have spoilt our plane connections and the entire visit in Poland as well.

Summarizing our travel, we were lucky - weather wise but not only. All went well. At the airports, and when in Poland. Great visit! Just wish could do it every year...

Many thanks to all our family and friends for your hospitality and the great time we spent together and all the gorgeous presents as well!

Special kudos to my sister for the early Christmas feast delicacies. I had not eaten some of them for four years. 😀

More about the places of interest mentioned above - soon. :-)

In The Kitchen With Tobo: 12 Cakes 12 Months: Vanilla Bundt Cake

In The Kitchen With Tobo: 12 Cakes 12 Months: Vanilla Bundt Cake: I have noticed recently, that, due to different life matters, I overlooked a couple of entries on my 12 Cakes 12 Months project. I had no...

Wywiady Klubowe: Rozmowa z Anną B.

Witam serdecznie wszystkich czytelników zainteresowanych Wywiadami Klubu Polki na Obczyźnie.

Gościmy dziś w Portugalii, gdzie mieszka Anna - Polka, blogerka i ...... czego jeszcze się dzisiaj dowiemy o Ani?

Twoje miejsce w Polsce...

Kraj/kraje i przyczyna Twojej emigracji to...

W Niemczech studiowałam w Rostocku i w Berlinie.

Czytam odkąd pamiętam, zawsze i wszędzie.

Z czego jestes dumna?

Z moich dzieci.

Kiedy zaczęłaś pisać bloga - o czym jest Twój blog?

Niemal równo dziesięć lat temu zaczęłam pisać blog o książkach – chciałam zatrzymać moje przemyślenia i wrażenia z lektur.

Stale stawiam sobie nowe wyzwania, próbuję czegoś nowego, mam głowę pełną pomysłów i spraw do zrobienia.

Movies Monthly: November

In November, we reached #802*.

New series:
  • Ashes to Ashes (BBC) - 2008 - about a lady police inspector who was shot and somehow, due to that, was moved in time - she was transferred to the beginning of the 80s. Lots of European music from that era included in the series soundtrack, nice to watch the fashion of the times as well. However, the main character - Alex Drake - the female police investigator most often wears (during work-time) the kind of clothes which in the 80s would have been worn at a night club or at a date not in an office. I guess, the series creators wanted the actress to look more attractive/less conservative but sometimes those outfits simply 'speak too loud'.
We managed to see the next three episodes of the Bourne series (although in rather accidental order):
However, we still have not seen the newest Bourne made in 2016. Maybe we will, soon.
It was interesting to watch the old cartoons:
  • 786. Popeye The Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves (1937) - duration 1 hour 21 min.
  • 787. Popeye The sailor Meets Sindbad The Sailor (1936) - duration about 97 minutes.
Funny stories. New (at that time), 3D-like way of making cartoons which were as long as regular movies too.

Our Movies of the Month

764. The Revenant - 2016 (adventure) - quite a different story/ movie, with lots of plot twists and turns. How could anybody survive such a struggle, fighting people and elements?

785. Battleship Potemkin - 1925 (drama) - a silent movie very different from the films made at the same time in the west. When you watch it, you have an impression you are watching an interesting documentary, not moving pictures/ a movie. The drama includes a first ever filmed scene - a baby carriage rolling down the stairs, which was copied later also in 'Untouchables'.

Sergei M. Eisnstein, the director of  Potemkin, made another great piece a few years later, in 1938. It was Alexander Nevsky with the epic 13th-century battle scenes on the frozen and cracking river. Wish we could see it again too.

The weakest film

769. Power, Passion & Murder - 1987 (drama), with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Very slow plot - we were waiting it would develop into something interesting but, instead of it, the film just suddenly ended. It was quite disappointing and a waste of time too. Considering, M. Pfeiffer was in it, we had expected something better. I assume, it is one of her worst movies. Not only the plot is weak but also the wardrobe, the clothes she is dressed in the movie, make her look awful.

On the other hand, Power, Passion & Murder is still better than Gravity as it, at least, contains more sophisticated lines than the latter one.

* It means that we had watched that many various shows by the end of November.

My Long Flight Essentials

Last week we came back from our November trip. The travel itself was very long - it took us 24 hours and three plane connections to get from Texas to my home place in Poland. Therefore, I am going to tell you what items helped me survive such a long journey.

First of all, no makeup (besides some bronzer and a little of powder, to avoid the shiny nose effect). During the long travel, spending hours at the airports and on the planes there would have been no time - and no mood - to remove the makeup and do my usual face care routine.

The air conditioned environment (planes and airports again) made my skin dry, that was why I was carrying my first aid moisturizing kit.

The containers were small enough to have them in the carry on luggage.

1. Vitamin face mist (paraben free and alcohol free) by Yves Rocher.

After about five-six hours since our travel started, the skin on my face started 'shrinking'. I could feel it needed some support. The pink grapefruit mist refreshed it and provided an instant revitalizing moisture.

2. My regular under-eye cream. Yes! The under eye areas were crying for help too!

3. A small box of Nivea cream - classic moisturizer brought a relief to my face during the 10-hour flight. One application on my cheeks and my face skin needed no more till the end of our journey.

A few minutes after spraying my face with the vitamin mist, I applied the under eye cream _ The Nivea cream - cheeks and forehead. It felt really good and prevented the face skin from the return of the 'dry-shrinking' feel.

There was something more, not for my face, though...

For my feet and legs comfort.
When we got to our seats on the plane (the longest flight), it was so good to be able to take off my boots and wear the comfy home shoes. At least during those 24 hours of travel, my legs/feet could rest too and I did not have to wear boots all the time.

To sum up, if you ever happen to travel for hours/spend so many hours on the plane, make sure you have your travel essentials in your carry on luggage. They do not take much space but may help to make your trip more enjoyable and easier.

Wywiady Klubowe: Rozmowa z Anną M-a

Dzisiejszy Wywiad Klubowy przeniósł nas do Azji. Czy byliście kiedyś w Wietnamie? W mieście Ho-Chi-Minh spotykamy Anię, naszą Koleżankę z Klubu Polki na Obczyźnie.

Witaj Aniu!

Twoje miejsce w Polsce...

Moje miejsce w Polsce to góry. Beskidy, Tatry, Sudety. Wszystkie kocham po równo. Szczególna dla mnie jest również Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska.

Jak dawno temu wyjechałaś z Polski?

Po raz pierwszy z Polski wyjechałam w 2013 roku.

Kraj/kraje i przyczyna Twojej emigracji to...

Najpierw była Finlandia. Potem Szwajcaria.
Ciekawość świata przywiodła mnie do Azji.

Klika słów o Twojej edukacji/ wykształceniu...

 Jestem lekarzem weterynarii.

Bloga założyłam dzień przed wylotem do Tajlandii.
