Some time ago, I researched a possible family connection with any Shraders and came across Wilhelm Shrader (born about 1724) who sailed to America with his parents but arrived at the New World alone. More about him in the post HERE.
Although that was all very interesting, Wilhelm Shrader was a rather distant and indirect ancestor. Maybe too distant to influence our grandmother's choice regarding naming her son.

Wilhelm Shrader
⇒ his son Heinrich Jacob Schrader (b. 5 July 1750, Rimbeck, Halberstadt, Saxony, Germany/d. 1 Feb. 1829, Jefferson, Kentucky) + wife Anna Maria (b. about 1740, Jefferson, Kentucky)
⇒ his son Jacob Shreader (17 August 1771, Westmoreland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/d. 11 Sept. 1837, Oldham, Kentucky) + wife Eva Elizabeth (b. 26 April 1774, Bethel Township, Berks, Pennsylvania/d. August 1860, Oldham, Kentucky). They married on 27 August 1793.

⇒ his son Elijah Shrader (b. about 1817, Oldham, Kentucky/d. 15 July 1845, Edgar County, Illinois)
⇒ his wife Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Shrader (b. about 1816, Madison Co., Virginia/d. 5 Oct 1849, Edgar County, Illinois)
Elijah and Sarah Ann married on 9 June 1834 in Oldham, Kentucky (1).
⇒ her sister Eliza Ann (Carpenter) Brown (b. 24 Sept. 1808, Madison, Virginia/d. 1 Nov. 1849, Oldham, Kentucky) married Mr. John Brown (b. 18 April 1811/d. 4 June 1841) on 20 April 1829 in Oldham, Kentucky (2).
⇒ her son John Liter Brown (b. March 1838 in Floydsburg, Oldham, KY) - a farmer and carpenter.
John relocated from Kentucky to Texas where he married (3) Miss Mary Susannah Lunsford (b. 17 May 1841, Kentucky/d. 9 August 1917, Allen, Collin, TX). She was the daughter of William Lunceford and Catherine Pottof Schrader, and a great-granddaughter of Wilhelm Shrader, the emigrant, mentioned above.
In 1880 John, his wife Mary Susannah, and their seven children lived in Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas. John was a farmer and he hired 11 men who also lived in the household (4). One of the workers was John's distant relative Albert Ross Wetsel.
John passed on 14 April 1913 in Collin County, Texas.

⇒ her husband James Lafayette Angle (b. 25 Feb. 1863, Tennessee/d. 27 June 1949, Allen, Collin, TX), son of Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.
James and Eliza Catherine married on 23 July 1890 and they had 8 children, two of whom died young.
The Census of 1940 recorded that Jim L Angle, his wife, son James L. Jr, Willie M (daughter-in-law) + a niece and nephew lived in Justice Precinct 6 (McKinney), Collin, Texas (5). The record contains a mistake. The children described as a nephew (Robert Doyle) and niece (Betty Sue) were actually James L Sr.'s grandchildren (6). Their parents were James Lafayette Jr. and Willa Mae (nee Starnes).
⇒ his younger sister Dora Elizabeth (Angel) Brown (b. 1 May 1868, Tennessee/d. 29 Dec. 1961, Plano, Collin, TX)
On 17 June 1880, Dora, her parents and siblings (Isabelle, James L., Albert Abner, Durrett Monroe, Nancy Neal, Charles Thomas, and John Walter lived at a farm in Justice Precinct 5, Collin, Texas (7).
⇒ her husband Robert Lee Howard - our great-uncle
I continued my research, looking for a Shrader family who lived in Texas, in the same area and at the same time where and when our grandma lived.
Well, I did find the Shraders in Texas.
George Hammond Shrader, a farmer, (b. on 11 Sept. 1825 in Warren County, Tennessee) and his wife Mary Inez Gibbs (b. 10 Nov. 1827, Warren, Tennessee) came to Collin County in Texas with their 12 children around 1871/1872.
In 1870 they all still lived in Civil District No. 9 in Coffee County, Tennessee (8). The twelfth child of George and Mary's was born on 26 Jan 1871 in Carroll County, Arkansas. Probably when the family was on their way to Texas. The supposition supports the fact that their last and thirteenth child was born in August 1874 in Frisco, Collin County, TX.
Anyway, the next Census which took place in 1880 recorded the Shrader family who dwelled in 6th Precinct of Collin County, TX.

George Hammond was a Civil War veteran. He served as Sergeant in 34th Regiment of 4th Tennessee Confederate Infantry (Capt. J. F. Ross' Company, Churchwell's Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers).
Af all his children only one had anything to do with teaching. It was George's third son and fourth child Houston Petway Shrader born 24 March 1855 in Coffee County, Tennessee.
Houston became a methodist preacher. He was a contemporary of our grandma Rachel. Actually, she was 11 years younger than him. They both lived in Collin County, Texas so, all in all, very likely it was Houston Petway Shrader who inspired grandma so much that she decided to name one of her sons after that Bible teacher.
Methodist Episcopal Curch in Fredericksburg, Texas |
On 10 June 1886, 31-year-old Houston married Miss Ruby Ann Emeline Edgar (b. 5 July 1861 in Newton, TX).
Mr. Shrader was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South from 1885 to 1910. He also worked in the Euless Methodist Church (1893/1894). In 1912, during his retirement, he served as a supply pastor in the Electra Circuit.
What makes it all even more interesting, is the fact that Houston Petway and our grandma Rachel were related due to the marriage of Houston's youngest brother (the one born in Texas) Daniel Booker Shrader. The latter one married Miss Ada R Rogers on 27 Nov. 1897 in Collin, TX (9).
Ada's brother Addison Pierce Rogers was married to Rachel's brother William Monroe Howard's son-in-law's sister.
Here is the family line
Houston Petway Shrader
⇒ his brother Daniel Booker Shrader (b. 4 August 1874, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 1 Oct. 1937, Collin, TX) was the first postmaster of Frisco
⇒ his wife Ada R Rogers (b. 14 Feb. 1876, Rockhill, Collin, TX/d. 20 May 1909, Collin, TX) was the daughter of Beverly Leonidas Rogers and Elizabeth Rhoda Ware. She was the first wife of Daniel's. They married on 27 Nov. 1897 (10).
In 1900, the couple lived with their first child, one-year-old son Harold Pearson and Daniel's mother Mary Inez in Justice Precinct 6 (north half), Collin, TX (11). Ada died at birth of her fifth child, a girl who was stillborn.
⇒ her brother Addison Pierce Rogers (b. 29 Jan. 1879, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 22 June 1961, Frisco, Collin, TX), farmer

Addison and Maude married on 15 Jan. 1902 in Collin, TX (12).
Possibly they had 4 children. At least that was what I found in the records.
⇒ her brother William Bryant Miller (b. 29 Nov. 1883, Tupelo, Mississippi/d. 5 Dec. 1971, McKinney, Collin, TX) was a salesman. The WW1 draft registration tells that William was tall, had blue eays and light hair (13).
⇒ his wife Geneva Clementine (Howard) Miller (b. 1 April 1889, Allen, Collin, TX/d. 10 June 1968, McKinney, Collin, TX)
William and Geneva's house was at 539 North Curch St., McKinney, TX (13).

⇒ his sister Rachel Clementine Howard - our grandmotherAnd how is Houston Petway Shrader related to Wilhelm Shrader the immigrant, mentioned at the beginning of this article? Maybe there is a more direct relation, but I have not found it. Actually, I have not looked for that since I found the Shrader family who settled in Colin, Texas.
That connection in our family tree goes through the Howard and Anglea family.
