Susan Brownell Anthony

Every day comes something new. Some new discovery in the family tree. This one amazes me. I did not know whom we have in the family ancestry until MyHeritage matches service sent me a message. I looked at its content and found myself surprised. Hello, I know that name! I learned about her while preparing for the citizenship civics exam.

The MyHeritage software says she is our 7th cousin twice removed. Who? Miss Susan Brownell Anthony. And her brother Mr. Daniel Read Anthony as well. Both of them were abolitionists. Susan was a civil rights activist and a suffragist, the women's rights movement supporter.

Daniel Read was a lieutenant colonel in 7th Regiment of Kansas Volunteer Cavalry (Union Army).
Susan B and Daniel R Anthony's parents were Daniel Anthony and Lucy Read.

Mary Lillian Duke

Mary Lillian Duke, our third cousin twice removed*, was born to Benjamin Newton Duke and Sarah Pearson Angier on 16 Nov 1887 in Durham County, North Carolina. The Duke family line originates in Kent, England.

In 1900, the Census recorded the family of Benjamin and Sarah Duke as the residents of Durham Township, Durham City, Durham, North Carolina (1).

In 1907 Mary graduated from Durham's Trinity College (with a degree in English). She was keen on arts and music. Eight years later on 16 June 1915, Mary Lillian married Mr. Anthony Joseph Drexel Briddle, Jr. (b. 17 Dec. 1897, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania), son of a millionaire Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle, Sr.

Mary's husband was a businessman and a politician. Among others, Anthony Joseph Drexel Briddle, Jr. was 5th US Ambassador to Poland (from 2 June 1937 to 1 Dec. 1943).

The couple had two children Mary Duke (born 21 Feb. 1920, New York, New York, New York) and Nicholas Benjamin Duke (b. 1 Sept. 1921). The daughter became an art lover and supporter like her mom, and a social and civil rights activist as well. She was also involved in politics and philanthropy.

Mary Lillian Durham Biddle started a charity foundation in 1956, she supported various non-profit organizations.

In 1935, Mary bought an estate in Durham where she lived until the day of her death (14 June 1960).

In some family trees there is confusion - the two Marys, Trollinger sisters, are taken as one person Mary Elizabeth Trollinger Roney Gant and two husbands are assigned to her - both John Roney (the younger sister's man) and Jonathan Kerr Gant. However, when you look at the years of their children birth, one can notice that it is a mix up - Mary Elizabeth would have had two husbands at the same time. At least I find it as a research error.

Mary Elizabeth Trollinger married our direct ancestor Jonathan Kerr Gant in 1808.

Roger Mowry

According to my research results, Roger Mowry (Morey) born on 16 May 1610 in Drimpton, Dorset, England is our direct ancestor (11 generations back).

Roger emigrated to America in 1628 on the ship Abigail. He lived in Boston, Plymouth, Salem, Massachusetts and later moved to Providence, Rhode Island where he built a house and a tavern (in about 1653). Roger Mowry was an inn-keeper. The inn was the meeting place of the town council, the building served as a church and local prison as well. Mowry was made freeman in 1655.

When he lived in Salem, in 1634, Roger Mowry married Miss Mary Johnson (b. about 1614 in London City, England). She was a daughter of  Capt. John Johnson and Mary Heath. Roger worked as a cattle carer then.

John Wilfred Gant And Gants of Iowa And Ohio

Not long ago, while working on the Memorial Day post, I came across the information regarding John Wilfred Gant born on 25 November 1921, in Iowa. During WWII, John served on the submarine USS Albacore as Motor Machinist's Mate, Third Class. His service number was 859191. Sadly, the man perished together with the entire crew on 7 November 1944, when Albacore hit a mine north-east of Hokkaido, Japan.

John Wilfred Gant was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. In the honorary death certificate, John's death day is given as 13 Dec. 1945, I guess, it was when he was officially recognized as Missing in Action/perished. John Wilfred's name is immortalized on the Honolulu Memorial.

I did not write about John and his WWII service in the Memorial Day Memento, because at that time, I had no clue what the relation between him and our family could be. I reckon there is a possibly of some connection (?) as I have already found an Iowa Gant line in our family tree. Cousin Darwin D Gant of Paton, Green, Iowa was killed in WW2 as well. How the two men John Wilfred and Darwin are connected - I am trying to find out.

John's parents were Everett Jay Gant and India (Indiana) Ford of Iowa. They married on 6 May 1912 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska. India was the second wife of Everett's. There is a record of his first marriage (30 August 1909, Marengo, Iowa, Iowa) to Miss Grace Rumple (1), daughter of Daniel Rumple and Mary Hutchinson.

India was the daughter of  Isaac Andrew Ford and Katherine Jane Miller (2).

Everett was born on 22 August 1886 in Victor, Iowa, Iowa. His parents were John Wendell Gant and Iva Hinder (3).

WW1 came, Everett was registered during the draft. He lived with his wife and children in Ohio, Des Moines, Iowa. He was a tall, stout man, his eyes were blue and hair was brown. The man had a 3-year training as an army musician (4).

In 1920 the family of Everett and India's lived in Des Moines, Ward 1, Polk County, Iowa. The couple had three children Alve L, Belva I. Everett worked as a brakesman with Steam Rail Road (5).

Alva Leo Gant, John's older brother was born on 7 Feb. 1913 in Redfield, Iowa (6).
Belva Imogene, the only daughter of Everett and India's was born on 12 Sept. 1914 in Redfield, Dallas County, Iowa (7).

Five years later, John and family lived in Polk City, Polk, Iowa (8).

I did not find John's WW2 draft registration record, but there is his father's paper (9). What is interesting, in that document Everett's eye color is marked as gray (not blue as it was in the previous war record). He was 5 ft 11 and he weighed about 210 pounds.

John Wilfred's grandparents were James Gant and Maria Preedmore (10).

John Walter Angel And Other Relations

Our relations to the Angel family go via the Howards and our grandmother Rachel. I wrote about the Angels a long time ago, but somehow, I missed one person then. Time to make it up.

John Walter Angel was born on 22 Sept. 1874 in Sumner County, Tennessee. His parents were Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.

When John was little, the family moved to Texas. On 29 August 1906, John Walter Angel married Miss Lula Vance. It happened in Ellis County, Texas. In the marriage record included below, the bride's first name is spelled in two different ways - first - it's Lula. A few lines below her name is given as Lela (1). In all later created documents, the latter versions repeated.

Anyway, Lela was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Jefferson Vance and Miss Willie Margaret Roulston. The girl was born on 31 July in Macon, Tennessee.

The young couple lived at #1 in Plano, Texas. John Walter was a farmer. The WW1 registration draft tells us that he was a man of medium height, medium built, his eyes were gray, and his hair was brown (2).

By 1920 John and Lela's family had grown. The two had 5 children. During the census of that year, they lived in Justice Precinct #5, in Plano, Texas. John ran a rented farm.

The census record informs that John Walter and Lela's place was close to the farm of Robert and Dora Howard's. Dora Angel was John's sister. Another relation lived nearby as well. It was Martha Alice Dupree nee Gant (b. 12 March 1870 in Sumner, TN). Her husband John Edward departed in 1914.

The Griffith family was one of the pioneer families of Anne Arundel County in Maryland.

Orlando Griffith was a grandson of the second wife of Capt. John Howard Jr., Elinor McCubbin - he has been already mentioned in the posts about the Howard family connections.

Orlando's home was known as White Place. In 1728, he became a vestry member of Queen Caroline Parish, and occupied pew No. 8, together with Capt. John Howard and Nicholas Dorsey.

Nicholas Dorsey Sr.  (b. about 1690, Maryland/d. Sept. 1717, All Hallows Parish, Maryland) is our direct ancestor as well. His son Col. Nicholas Dorsey Jr. (b. about 1712, Maryland/d. 1780) Sarah A Griffith (b. 13 May 1718/d. 1 Sept. 1794), Orlando's daughter.

Howard Family Line

Checking one of the direct family ancestry lines. I came across the missing link between our American/Texan Howards and the knights, noblemen of England. At the same, time I learned quite new things about the latter ones (who appear to be our direct ancestors as well).

There has been a dispute among researches regarding who Edward's parents were. Some say it might have been John Howard Sr. and Elizabeth Locke (see below), others find it doubtful.

Here the line goes directly to either Matthew Howard or Mary's mother Anne Hall. Some sources mention Matthew Howard as Mary's father, some say it was Mr. Thomas Chowan because Anne had more than one husband.

Thomas was Mary Boleyn's uncle. Margaret's uncle was Henry VIII. Allegedly, the two (Margaret and Thomas) married secretly in April 1536, without the consent of King Henry.

The affair was serious as Margaret was the next candidate to the throne after her uncle. Anyway, the king got angry, had both Thomas and Margaret locked up in the Tower of London and annulled their marriage. Thomas Howard died in The Tower prison on 31 Oct. 1537. Margaret survived the family drama - Henry pardoned and released her.

I have "found" Robert by accident, while checking another family tree branch, not really looking for him.

Some genealogists deny this family relation and claim that Robert was not born in Syon House, and he actually was the son of John Howard the Knight. However, if his parental line is true, there would have been reasons for denying the lineage. I am not a historian, so I do not have any proof on who Robert's parents were, but in my opinion, with the illegitimate children that Henry had, a legitimate son of a socially and politically inconvenient and unwanted union could have been possible as well.

Edward Bompasse

Time for our another direct ancestry line and Edward Bompasse/Bumpas - our nine times great-grandfather.

Possibly, The Bumpas/Bunpas family was of French origin (Perpignan, south-western France).

However, Edward (or Edouad as he was also called) was born in about 1605 in Saint Bartholomew Parish in London, England. Probably, Edward was Protestant and therefore, spent some time in Leyden, Holland. Anyhow, on 10 Nov. 1621, young Bompasse came to Plymouth on the ship Fortune.

Two years later, he received an acre of land and cattle. Edward married Hanna in about 1628 - the couple had at least twelve children.

In about 1635, Edward sold his land and relocated to Marshfield where he obtained property and stayed for a few years.

Finally, the man moved with his family to Middleborough and then, to Duxbury.

Later in his life, after 1665, allegedly, Edward experienced financial difficulties. Regarding the day of his death - various sources give different information on that matter. Some say he died on 3 Feb. 1693 in Marshfield, Plymouth, Massachusetts, others claim it happened before 5 March 1583.

Gerard Alexander Foote

Mr. Foote was one of the early settlers in Collin County. He was born on 28 Sept. 1823 in Fauquier County, Virginia to Mr. Alexander Foote and Miss Jane Elliott Washington.

When Gerard was nine years old, the family moved to Noxubee County Mississippi. Gerard Alexander Foote attended Centenary college in Mississippi.

In 1845, Dr. Foote came to Collin County.  A year later, he became the surgeon of Capt. William Fitzhugh's Texas Rangers.  On 11 Nov. 1847, our man married Miss Eliza Jane McGarrah, the daughter of Colonel J. McGarrah.

Gerard Alexander Foote practiced and studied medicine at the same time. In 1856, Mr. Foote graduated from Memphis Medical College. Besides being a local GP, during the Civil War, G A Foote also served as a surgeon in the 11th Texas Confederate Cavalry (under Col. William Young).
The doctor was dedicated to his work and the citizens of the local community.

Mr. G A Foote assisted in organizing a charter of St. John's Lodge in Collin County. He was also a member of Knights Templar McKinney Commandery No. 34.
 
Later, Dr. Gerard was also a member of the Texas legislature and, together with Mr. Henry C Herndon ran a Foote & Herndon drugstore in McKinney.

In 1880, Dr. Foote switched from merchandising to financial business - he was a co-founder of Collin County Bank and became its president.

Gerard's wife passed away on 13 September 1889. About nine years later, on 11 April 1898, Mr. Foote married Miss Corinne Lee from Clarksville, Texas.

Gerard Alexander Foote lived 78 years, 9 months, and 18 days. The man died at 9:20 am on Thursday, 17 July 1902, in his house in McKinney.
