TV Series

I have not talked about movies and TV shows for quite a long time. Today I mention a few of the latter ones. We have watched a lot of various TV series, some of them were more, some less interesting.

Here is a portion of those we have finished viewing and which we liked because of various reasons.

Bomb Girls (2012/2014) - quite an interesting story portraying women working at a munition factory in Canada during WW2. The plot shows the main characters from their personal angles unraveling their problems and secrets.

Cadfael (1994/1998) - about a medieval monk (played by Derek Jacobi) detective.

Doctors at Large - just a light comedy (1971). The 25 minute episodes were quite convenient to watch when we needed a light theme break.

La Otra Mirada (A Different View), made 2018/2019 - set in Spain in the twenties of the 20th century. Quite an involving plot, drama and suspense with personal touch, regarding life stories/disturbances experienced by the series main characters. It is a pity no season 3 was made. By the way, the Spanish language (Castillan Spanish ?) spoken by the actors sounds very pretty.

Some History

The Aces' War  (2017/2019) - WW1 history - presents the most known European pilots of that time. Well made but lacks information regarding the non-European pilots and their achievements. Available on Roku TV.

War of 1812 (1919 production) -  quite informative, gives detailed information about the circumstances that led to the war, its main officers, battles, and timeline.

 Crime and Drama type show

Men with a Camera - ancient TV drama (1958) - young Charles Bronson plays the main character Mike, a photographer who uses the most modern technology of that time while solving crime-type puzzles.

Movies Monthly: October

The shows which we enjoyed most.

TV Series

The Collection - BBC - 2016 (drama) - the designers mother - her look remonds me of a lady I used to know.

Tracy Ullman's Show - 2016 (comedy) - BBC - funny but we are not always sure who is being portrayed in an episode (who that person is supposed to be). Thanks to the series we found out who the new husband of Jerry Hall's is. By the way, Jerry and my husband did go to the same high school.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries - 2013 Australian detective story

Murdoch Mysteries - the seventh season of the Canadian detective story - always enjoy watching it. If you do not know Murdoch was not only a bright minded detective but also a  smart inventor.

Documentary Series

The Civil War: Brothers Divided - 2017 - very informative shown with a presonal approach, naming the soldiers who took part in the battles on both sides of the war and what happened to them later.

Mike Judge Presents: Tales from the Touring Bus (cartoon) - quite a different type of documentary. I did not know much about those country singers. An Interesting way of presenting their music careers/life stories.

Our October Classics

The Killer Elite - 1975 (action, thriller) - I watched it for the first time in the 80s.

Magnum PI - 1980 (crime, action) - we watched a few episodes of that old but enjoyable series.

The Blues Brothers - 1980 (musical, comedy) - great music and good, funny stuff.

Catch 22 - 1970  (drama, war) - it is not really a comedy, more a movie that makes you think of certain things. I have heard that the book by Joseph Heller is no longer on the reading lists in some school districts. If it is true you may think - why. Anyway, it was even more interesting to watch the movie.

Mockery - 1927 (drama) - silent movie - the story and the actors' parts are still interetsing to watch. Also because they are different than the nowadays moving pictures and the acting as well.

The Devil's Rejets - 2005 (crime) - finally I know where the line "What's the matter kid, don't you like clowns?" comes from.

Other Movies

Momentum - 2015 (action) - we had never seen an action movie filmed in South Africa. Pretty areas and a good action plot.

Postman - 1997 (adventure, drama) - one of the movies with a deeper message. I am not sure how many such brave mail deliverers wold be found today if it was needed.

Victor Frankenstein - 2015 (SF) - quite a different version of the traditional Frankenstein's story.

The Accidental Spy - 2001 (action, comedy) - always funny and entertaining Jackie Chan.

Bang Bang Baby - 2014 (musical) crazy but entertaining + good singing.

Pineapple Express - 2008 (action, comedy) stupid but entertaining.

Road to Perdition - 2002 (crime, drama) - good movie and a mafia man's story.

The Young Messiah - 2016 (drama) - the only movie showing Jesus as a little boy which I had ever seen. Nice and interesting approach.

When Time Expires - 1997 (SF) - We did enjoy watching it - the slowly developing plot is intriguing and involving but totally different from the nowadays SF movies.

Our Halloween Night Shows

Ten Little Indians - 1965 - a clasic based on the novel by Agatha Christie.

White Zombie - 1932 - The first zombie film - the original meaning of 'a zombie' shown in the movie.

House of Wax - 1953 - an early 3D movie + in color

Movies Monthly: September

Here are the films and TV shows which we enjoyed watching most in the month of September.

Miniseries

Hatfields & McCoys - 2012 (history) - with the family connection to McCoys (which I had found during my ancestry research project) it was very interesting to rewatch the tragic family history. This time, we looked at all the events from a more personal angle. Our connection to McCoys was Ms. Barbara Trollinger (born in 1768). In 1796 she married William McCoy who was Asa Harmon McCoy's uncle.

Documentaries:

Beslan - Three Days in September - 2006 - school starts in Poland on September 1 as well. On that day in 2004, I started another school work year - everything at our school went smoothly, as usual. The opening school year ceremony and the all school gathering lasted for about a half an hour, then students went to the classrooms to meet their teachers and get their classes schedules. That was all. At the same time in Beslan, such horrifying things happened and lasted much longer than one school-day only. In my opinion, everybody should watch the documentary, maybe they could see then what appalling deeds are certain people capable of.

Expedition Texas - the episodes which we watched had been aired in 2016 (season 7) - little known but interesting facts about places and (old) buildings in Texas.

The Vietnam War  - 2017 - very informative and educational series. I was born when the war had already begun. I lived in Poland, I was little and Vietnam was far away in Asia. Never had I realized how long the war lasted and how very much deceived those men had been until I watched the series. They all were the victims of the war.

It is stunning how current some comments and slogans from the 70s, showed in the documentary, seem to be. "Our flag - love it or leave" for example. A lot of interesting facts and materials make the show quite a history lesson.

The last part of the series I found very moving. Our brother is a Vietnam veteran as well.

Our Classics of September

Platoon - 1986 (war) - we watched it as the post-final part of The Vietnam War series. Many historical facts mentioned in the documentary were included in the movie.

Cobra - 1986 (action) - another Stallone's film which is good to rewatch from time to time.

Dune - 1984 (SF)  - I used to have the book which the movie was based on. The book (original version in English) was thick, full of descriptive parts. It was interesting to see the visual version of it. Quite well-made, I did enjoy watching the movie.

Seven Years in Tibet - 1997 (biography, drama) - if you have not seen it, you should. Certainly worth sparing your time to watch the 1997 version of the film. I have not seen the original Austrian story made earlier in the 50s.

Network - 1976 (drama) - it is sad how the movie TV premonition seems to be very much a reality right now. "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take this anymore!" feels still current too.

Other movies

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - 2016 (fantasy) - interesting, involving and entertaining + many nice computer effects.

The Lucky Ones - 2008 (drama) - unfortunately, as it was shown in the movie, many people neglect not only the ex and present service men and women as persons but their sacrifices as well.

Land of Mine - 2015 (war, history) - a tricky title - it meant something totally else than you could think.

Sister - 2016 (drama) - it is commonly known that a family environment has a great impact regarding child's development and life. That influence obviously may be positive or negative. The film shows an interesting example of it all + how the bond between siblings may change and grow.

Tremors 1- 4 (SF) - the original first part (1990) and the fourth "The Legend Begins" were the most enjoyable ones of the four.

Suicide Kings - 1997 (drama) - a weird but interesting story.

Eagle Eye - 2008  - a bit different action film.

Movies Monthly: August

In August we happened to watch quite a variety of interesting and entertaining movies.

TV series - only one that month (by BBC):

Mapp & Lucia - the two main characters who are quite full of themselves, provide entertainment to a small town social 'circle'. Another type of Ms. Bucket [bouquet] series.

Films

Collateral Beauty - 2016 (drama) - a movie with a deeper message.

Hell or High Water - 2008 (drama) - a contemporary Texas cowboy type film.

Rocknrolla - 2008 (drama, crime) weird but curious as well.

Nothing to Lose - 1997 (comedy) - funny and enjoyable, with well written and thought of plot. Made us lough loud.

Huntsman: Winter's War - 2016 (fantasy) - the previous Huntsman movie "Snow White" had more special cute, computer made effects. The newest film was worth watching anyway.

Stir of Echoes - 1999 (horror, mystery) - not a typical horror, quite engaging with action turns.

The Interpreter - 2005 (thriller) - We watched it because of the director's name: Sydney Pollack who is one of my favorite movie makers. There were also some other stars in it, including Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. And we were not disappointed.

Gran Torino - 2009 (drama) - with C. Eastwood whose appearance on the cast list always lets us expect it is going to be a quality movie. And it was. Eastwood plays an elderly veteran, a lonely man (despite having a family) who (a bit unwillingly at the beginning) helps his neighbors.  I admire the actor he keeps his class, does not pretend a superman in his current movies (like some other actor of his generation).

The Thomas Crow Case - 1999 (crime, romance), with  P. Brosnan - an intriguing plot.

Invincible - 2001 - (drama) - always remember who you are and where you are from.
I did not know the story about the 36 righteous people who are supposed to live among us.

In a Valley of Violence - 2016 (western) - a good cowboy movie with John Travolta as a bad guy.

Music

The Australian Pink Floyd Concert - 2016 - wish I had seen it live...

August Classics

The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima - 1952 (drama, biography) - A storm started while we were watching the film. When the crowd was calling: "Holy Mother, give us a sign! Give us a sign! Give us a sign!", a thunder struck very close to our house. It was so strong and loud like an explosion. It seemed strange and unexpected - we had our sign.

O, Brother Where Art Thou? - 2000 (comedy drama) - I love the movie and its music soundtrack. I have seen it quite a few times but it is always enjoyable seeking it again. The two main characters Delmar/Tim Blake Nelson (my favorite one) and Pete/John Turturro are fantastic. With their faces (great styling) and face expressions and acting, they seem so authentic, funny and likable at the same time. One of my all time movies.

Magnum Force - 1973 (action) - one of our Clint Eastwood August movies.

The Rookie - 1990 (crime) - well, we do like Clint Eastwood and the characters he created.

Destination Gobi - 1953 (WWII) - a side story of the war about 1st US Mongolian Cavalry. One of those less known WW2 fronts.

Total Recall -1990 (SF) - one of my most favorite SF movies. Always enjoy watching it again.

Movies Monthly: July

TV Serials by BBC:

Father Brown 5 - 2017 (detective story) - Lady Felicia has been removed from the character/cast list and substituted with a younger and more adventurous one.

Ashes to Ashes 3 - 2010 (detective story) - absolutely fantastic! The best of all seasons. Season 1 was the weakest/worst.

The Coroner - 2015 (crime story) - A coroner in England is a solicitor and criminal investigator. In Poland, it is a doctor who examines dead bodies, states death of a person and issues death certificates. Totally different positions, jobs and duties.

The Black Adder - 1982 (comedy) - Rowan Atkinson in Medieval settings and made up Medieval history plot.

Remember Me - 2014 (ghost story) - quite different to all the BBC series we have watched so far. A well written and an intriguing story.

Documentaries:

Penelope Keith's Hidden Villages - 2014/2017 - lovely villages of Great Britain. Picturesque landscapes and pretty gardens. We would not mind living in one of those places. We would very much enjoy local little festivities and the countryside environment.

Kangaroo Dundee - 2017 - the series presents the man (and his friends) who rescue abandoned kangaroo babies and wallabies, raise them and bring them back to nature. Their dedication to saving little animals is really amazing.

Movie Classics:

The films which we enjoyed re-watching

Jaws - 1975 (thriller)
Jaws 2 - 1978 (thriller)

Death Wish - 1974 (action) - the original Death Wish is the best according to us. Each of the sequels made later was worse and worse - each next one was worse than a previous one.

Predator - 1987 (action/SF) - when I saw the movie for the first time (in the late 80s/early 90s), it was a very, very bad copy of it - the fifth or sixth one possibly. The quality of the picture was very bad and the silhouette of the Predator (which originally is rather unclear) was more like a green stain on the TV screen. I did enjoy the plot of the film, but when it ended I did not know what the Predator was. Therefore, re-watching the picture was more like watching it for the very first time.

Other - Newer - Films:

Hacksaw Ridge - 2016 (biography, WW2) - A true and moving story of a man who despite the fact that he did not wish to carry or touch a gun because of his religious views, he appeared to be a true hero and saved many lives.

Nowadays, when the meaning of the word 'hero' seems to be lost, changed or twisted totally, the movie and its main character remind what a hero really means...

War of the Worlds - 2015 (SF) - an interesting version of the fiction novel by H.G. Wells.

Legacy - 2013 (drama, thriller) - set in 1974 - an ex-army man discovers the unknown facts about his father's past. All in all, quite a complicated story.

Australia - 2008 (drama) - there is no place like home, wherever it is.

Movies Monthly: June

Here are some notes on what we enjoyed watching most in the month of June.

Serials

The ones (by BBC) which came back with a new season:

  • Grantchester 3 - (drama, detective story);
  • The Tunnel 2: Sabotage - (crime story) - I enjoy watching the process of gradual development of Elise's social skills;
  • Broadchurch 3 - (crime story) - the previous season was disappointing. We expected a new thread to be presented then. Instead of it, the old plot was munched. Good, it is not repeated as we would have stopped watching the series.

A new one:

Prime Suspect: Tennison - 2017 (detective story) - set in the 70s, with all the props from the decade, including the Grundig radio, the interior of the flats, fashion and car models. It all brings my childhood to my mind. The reality in Poland looked very similar then. Everyday stuff which we used and had was similar. All in all, we were not so much behind the rest of Europe as someone could think. A lot of the music of the 70s was included in each series episode. I watched them all with some sentiment, recalling the long gone era. On the other hand, the story was very interesting as well.

Mini series:

The Passing Bells - 2014 (WW1) - I have seen quite a few movies depicting WW1 events/times. In Passing Bells, the first time the partitioned Poland was mentioned.

To Your Knowledge: Poland was partitioned for the third time in 1795. Three empires Prussia, Austria, and Russia divided Poland into three parts and took control over it. It meant Poland no longer existed as a country and the Polish people automatically became citizens of the suppressant empires. They not only were forbidden to speak Polish but also, when WW1 began, had to serve in the Prussian, Austrian or Russian army, depending on where they lived. In that way, Poles fought against their own people as well. My great-grandpa was one of them. Anyway, Poland regained its independence after the war, when the peace treaty was signed in 1918.

A great series showing individuals and their families involved in the war. Personal tragedies which they had to face and deal with. Each episode includes testimonials of ex-soldiers, the war participants, the words of original letters written by the army men. What is more, parts of original documentaries are merged with the TV show scenes. There is no us and them in the series. Just people.

Movies of June

9 - 2009 (animation) - quite deep and dark for a cartoon. Lots of work and thinking (the plot, setting, and characters) included in making it.

Dirty Pretty Things - 2002 (drama) - at first I did not know which country the plot was set in as each character spoke English with a foreign, non-British accent. Soon, I realized it was contemporary London. Quite an Immigrant Song.

The Boy - 2016 (horror) - different than we thought it would be - with quite an unexpected plot turn.

Tale of Tales - 2015 (fantasy) - modern type fairy tales in which nothing tends to be beautiful, cute, characters are not good or bad only and there is no such a thing as a happy ending. They did not live happily ever after.

Slumdog Millionnaire - 2008 (drama) - horrible living conditions of slums in India, crime, love, brotherhood and more. I know the name of the third musketeer but if I was asked questions on India and its culture, I would most probably fail to answer.

Stage Beauty - 2004 (drama) - quite tragic was the faith of those male-female stage beauties when their acting was no longer needed/admired.

Classics of June

The Killers - 1946 (crime) - based on the novel by Hemingway. The movie is the origin of the Dragnet series. We learned something again as we had thought Dragnet was the original crime story serial but, as it appeared, it was just a sequel of a former idea.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying - 1964 (comedy) - a bit weird as most of Kubrick's movies. Entertaining, though. Besides, Kubrick is one of my favorite film directors.

The Lost Patrol - 1934 (WW1) - with Boris Karloff - when you think WW1, you most likely associate it with France, Germany, Europe in general. Not a Mesopotamian desert. Another front of the war.

Movies Monthly: May

June is about to be over so it is time to tell you which movies and TV shows struck our fancy in May.

TV series

Detective stories by BBC:

DCI Banks - we did not watch much of the previous season which was presented a few years ago. It looks like this time the series may not be aired long again.

Ashes to Ashes - III season - 2010 - a new-look of the main female character and more music of the 80s - less new age and more punk rock tunes + some non-British music as well. I started liking the series mostly due to the DCI Gene Hunt role played Philip Glenister. The character seems very similar to Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) from 'Murdoch Mysteries' - another crime story series. The same type of man, the same type of inspector, similar behavior and personality, similar look even - different time setting only. At first, I thought the two parts might be played by the same actor but no, they were two different men. I also like the new image of Alex Drake and the entire detective crew - the bond they share (besides Jim Keats who seems rather slippery).

Scott & Bailey - although the serial has had many seasons, just a few episodes appeared on our local TV. Maybe because there was nothing special about it (besides some entertainment), just another detective TV show.

Documentaries

Plants Behaving Badly - an educating show about carnivorous plants.

Victorian Slum House - quite an illuminating series. The real life circumstances in the Victorian Slum House must have been one hundred times worse and much harder due to the omnipresent filth, diseases, malnutrition, lice and other nasty bugs, rats and so on. We really liked the tailor's family, most of all the ones who took part in the series. They were so integrated - the parents and two children working together and learning together, supporting each other. Not all the children worked so really hard. As it was mentioned in the series, some quickly got bored and did nothing. Maybe a reason of that was those kids were younger than the tailor family children and they did not understand the meaning of it all, why they were taking part in the show. Maybe it was something else but we disliked that attitude of being indolent and idle which made the parents work only. Luckily, it was just a TV show. If the children had lived in Victorian times, they would have not been able to skip the work.

Not long after watching the documentary series about the London slum house, I came across some interesting information - possibly, one of my distant relative's father (whom I had never heard about - neither the relative nor his father) was born in Whitechapel, London at the time depicted in the Victorian Slum House series.

Movies

As usual, we watched some older films/some classics + more current ones.

Absolute Power - 1997 (crime, drama) with Clint Eastwood - one of our this months classics. I had already seen the film but it was so long ago, I could not recall much of the plot.
Some actors' names make you expect a certain level of a quality of a movie. Clint Eastwood is one of those who do not disappoint you. 'Absolute Power' is a good movie indeed.

The Man Who Knew Infinity - 2015 (biography) - I had never heard of that math genius of India who had the 'visions with numbers' when he prayed/concentrated. Despite his brilliant mind, quite a tragic life he had.

Bat*21 - 1998 (war) - one of the Vietnam war movies - about a lost in action officer who is rescued in dramatic circumstances. Quite well-made and an involving story too.

The Day the Fish Came Out - 1967 (drama, SF) - a French production set on a Greek island - quite a weird film, interesting though.

The Whistler - series of movies - made in 1944 - 1948 (crime, thriller). An early version of The Twilight Zone.

Leon: The Professional - 1994 (crime, drama). Another classic in May. An outstanding part of Leon created by Jean Reno. The young actress who accompanied him did really well.

The Attack of Lederhosen Zombies - 2016 (horror style comedy) - totally silly but funny as well.

No Time for Sergeants - 1958 (comedy, war) - Andy Griffith as a very simple young countryman drafted into the Air Force + his comic adventures.

Movies Monthly: April

Today I am sharing with you which movies and shows we found most interesting last month.

TV series

Home Fires (BBC production) came back with the second season.  The plot is quite engaging. So many various types of characters. There is always something new the series heroines have to deal with. Besides, I like some of the wardrobe pieces, especially cute sweaters, presented by the ladies.

A Place Called Home - another season started. When we began watching the previous season, at first I did not very much enjoy it - we did not see the very first episodes so it was rather confusing who was who and what was going on. So far, the second part has been really involving. Waiting for the great fall of Regina's. Hopefully, it will come and the hateful lady will be properly 'rewarded' for all the evil plotting against others. Who knows what will Anna reveal about family secrets in her book? Maybe more than it is expected. Anyway, her outfits - dresses and matching cardigans are lovely. My type of fashion. 👩

Agatha Raisin - another detective story series by BBC. Not much had happened in the quiet English village before Agatha moved in. Since then, murder after murder, one criminal case after another Agatha needs to look into. All in all, an entertaining series. The lady reminds me of a woman I used to work with - the same hairstyle, hair color, type of makeup.

The White Princess - dramatized history facts regarding Elizabeth of York, her husband King Henry VII, their family members and the War of Roses. When we are young, we tend to think how good it would be to be a princess or a king - no need to do much, servants doing all the work for us, wealth and enjoyment every day. How different the truth was and how dangerous (due to plotting and hate at a royal court) such a life would have been, we can learn from history and series like that one. The White Princess brought to my mind 'The Plantagenet Saga' - a series which I enjoyed watching a long time ago. To sum up - the history of England showed through the lives of individuals and their personalities as well.
The sound in the show (and in many new movies) is so low that you can hardly hear what the characters are saying, even when the volume is maxed up.

Morgan Freeman's Through The Wormhole - very sophisticated topic talked about this time (at least so far) in the documentary. You could not agree with all the presented theories - well gives a subject for a discussion at least.

Films

Son of Saul - 2015 (war) - Hungarian production: the horrors of concentration camp death factory ' line' and the fate of the prisoners involved in it. Even if you know something about how the death camps worked, seeing it (in the movie) is quite shaking.

Two for Texas - 1998 (western) - history of Texas showed from a bit different angle and in a different way. Actually as if by the way. An interesting approach and a good movie.

Non-Stop - 2014 (thriller) - frequent plot turns make the movie engaging and interesting. Liam Neeson as a controversial air marshal versus iPhones and terrorists on the plane.

Testament of Youth - 2014 (war, biography) - the tragedy of WWI from a personal perspective. The distress of those who fought and their family members who stayed at home.

The Lone Ranger - 2014  - western, adventure + humor (and Johnny Depp) = good entertainment for the entire family.

That is all about our April movies. Soon, I am going to tell you more about Aunt Lula, my ancestry research inspiration.

Movies Monthly: February

The time is passing by so quickly. Recently, I have been interviewing fellow bloggers. Besides, I have planned quite a few other posts for this month. There are plenty of things I would like to write about if time allows. Well, plans are plans but life is life and everyday matters chem them sufficiently.

Except dealing with my blog and doing home things, I have been involved in family - genealogy research again. I started working on our family tree three years ago, then had a longer break. Last week, I restarted 'working' on the ancestors and enlarging the family tree. I find it so very interesting and exciting. Discovering a 'missing' record/person and a new family connection is like solving a sophisticated puzzle. One thread is leading to another one and another one and so on. It is quite rewarding if I happen to come across a family branch or manage to get in touch with a far relative whom we did not know at all. However, I am successful only on the research connected with my husband's family line as I know almost nothing about my side of the family. I wish I could find anything on my direct ancestors.

Needless, to say my genealogy hobby is as involving as time-consuming. That is why I am lacking the time to post more articles on the blog. I will try to make it happen anyway. No matter how I like the interview posts series, I would not want to have interviews only here.

Nevertheless today I am catching up with telling you about our February movies time.

Our shows of the month were:

The Informer - 1932 (drama), directed by John Ford - a study of a man who betrayed his friends and had a man killed to get the money his girlfriend dreamed of to buy tickets to America.

Midsummer's Night Dream - 1935 - a short story turned into a charming fairy tale. Ballet, comedy, fantasy, exquisite special effects (considering the time when the movie was made), it all makes a very enjoyable performance. If the movie was in color, it would be pretty stunning.

The Presidio - 1988 (crime) - with Sean Connery. I had seen the film a long time ago, I am glad we could watch it again. The movie is certainly worth it - good suspense and mystery story.

U-571 - 2000 (war) - one of the best submarine type movies.

Sunshine - 1999 (drama, history) - the story of a few generations of a Hungarian family and how they fit (or they did not) into the history periods of the country. I had seen many movies on WW2 and WW1 in particular European countries but none of them told about realities of those time in Hungary.

Documentaries

  • The Tales from The Royal Bedchamber
  • The Tales from The Royal Wardrobe

Both made by BBC. Interesting bits and pieces on the royal habits, lifestyle, customs and fashion - the information which you will not find in a typical history handbook.

Movies Monthly: January

In January, some of our favorite series came back after the Christmas break. Besides, Sherlock appeared with the newest season, which was in our opinion the best of all.

A new season of Death in Paradise (detective story series) started. DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) seems to be a more interesting character than the DI of the very first Death in Paradise season. Officer Dwayne Myers (Danny John-Jules) is quite a funny person, he adds a lot of humor to the series.

Brand new BBC series have begun this year:

  • Vera - a detective story, the most interesting one.
Vera (Brenda Bethlyn) is a middle-aged female detective, sharp minded, determined and very friendly as well. She addresses everybody 'Love'. Although she looks very soft, more like not a very well-groomed housewife, than a bright policewoman who she actually is, she speaks her mind when it is needed. Being successful at her work, Vera seems not to cope very well with her loneliness - lonely personal life.
  • Black Books (comedy) - silly but entertaining.
  • Murder in Suburbia - just another detective story series about two young lady detectives.
Other series which we found interesting:
  • Six (war, action, history, drama) - 2017
  • The Story of God with Morgan Freeman (documentary)
The new season was a bit different than the previous one. Mr. Freeman did not travel to all the places on Earth showed in the 3 episodes. There were other persons instead of him as well. I wish there had been more episodes of the documentary series.
  • Secrets of the Six Wives (documentary) - interesting facts and the history showed from a different angle - the king Henry VIII's wives perspective. We learned new things about the queens' life stories and all the history matters showed from their point of view.

Most interesting movies of January

  • The Saint Meets the Tiger - 1943
  • The Saint's Vacation - 1941
You think you know something but you actually do not. We thought The Saint series made in the 60s was the original one - meaning the idea and the main character. It appeared there had been quite a few, made much earlier movies about Simon Templar - an early version of James Bond. They were based on the novels by Leslie Charteris - which we had never heard about.

According to us, the worst of those Saint movies was The Saint Strikes Back, which was supposed to be created under the supervision of the book character author. The plot of that story was very weak and not so interesting and humorous as the ones mentioned above.

Anyway, we watched all the old and original The Saint films (1938-1943). The very first one - The Saint in New York, was quite different to all the ones which followed it. It was more like a gangster movie not just a story about a wealthy dandy.

  • State and Main - (comedy), 2000. Some truths showed in the movie seem to be always current.
  • Lucy - (SF) 2014 - quite an intriguing story about a woman who was able to use 100% of her brain.
  • Lone Survivor - (war) 2014 - we watched the movie (based on the real story/book Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team by Marcus Luttrell) when it was released in 2014. Since we read the second book written by the same author, we just wanted to remind ourselves the Lone Survivor.
  • Windtalkers - (war/WW2), 2002, with Nicolas Cage - a very interesting movie showing the participation of Navajo Marines in the war. I had not known that the Navajo language was used during WW2 as an unbreakable code/radio cipher.
  • To Be or Not to Be - (comedy),1942 - a funny story of a Polish theater troupe involved in an anti-spy plot. The comedy is set in Warsaw occupied by Nazis (WW2). This original story and the film were much better and funnier than a remake made in 1983.

Movies Monthly: December 2016

What was on in December?

Vikings came back - according to us - with, so far, the most interesting season of all.

We watched a couple of the new MacGyver episodes. Just to see what the new series is like. Well, the main character looks as if he was 17 or 19 years old. When did he manage to learn all the MacGyver's stuff? The plot in the current series seems to be more developed than in the old one, with more characters around. It was interesting in a way. However, we preferred when each episode was a closed chapter. Thanks to that, if you missed a few episodes or watched them in a random order, you did not miss anything.

I did not like the visuals (additional info on what MacGyver did or used) added in the new series. Such visual elements seem to be common nowadays - written text messages, phone screen shots and such. I am not keen on that type of graphic effects in a movie as I find them disturbing/interrupting. My mind works more independently and less schematically than an iPhone - I do not need to see the text of the messages or somebody's face on the phone communicator, I am able to imagine things and understand them without a written tip given a movie screen.

All in all, the only real MacGyver is the original one.

Our shows of December were:

813. Judgement Night - 1993 (action, crime, drama), with Emilio Estevez.
815. Celtic Woman - Home for Christmas Concert in Ireland - a best Christmas show on our list.

822. The Age of Adeline - 2015 (drama, fantasy) - quite an interesting story.

850. Child 44 - 2015 (crime, thriller) - a very different detective story - set in the Soviet Union. With a very different detective (different from the other ones we watched).

854. Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir - another great music concert.

860. Hollow Crown -The War of the Roses: Richard III - a play by BBC - with a stunning role created by Benedict Cumberbatch.

873. Shaolin - 2011 (action, drama) - we thought it would be another movie with Jackie Chan - more or less similar to all the other ones - full of funny scenes and his adventures but Shaolin is not that kind of movie at all. Although J. Chan appears in it, his part is a minor one (well, yes, a few funny gags too). All the movie is about something else - without Chan's participation as the main actor. Chinese production with English subtitles - certainly worth watching.

In case if you do not know what the numbers next to the film titles mean - in December, we finished our 2016 counting project.

The results:
in the year 2016, we watched 878 various shows including different kinds of films, music concerts, documentaries, natural history shows, cartoons, and others. We would have watched more if we had not traveled in November.

This year I am planning to continue my Movies Monthly report, but I am not going to count the programs anymore.

How many movies did you watch last year?

Movies Monthly: November

In November, we reached #802*.

New series:
  • Ashes to Ashes (BBC) - 2008 - about a lady police inspector who was shot and somehow, due to that, was moved in time - she was transferred to the beginning of the 80s. Lots of European music from that era included in the series soundtrack, nice to watch the fashion of the times as well. However, the main character - Alex Drake - the female police investigator most often wears (during work-time) the kind of clothes which in the 80s would have been worn at a night club or at a date not in an office. I guess, the series creators wanted the actress to look more attractive/less conservative but sometimes those outfits simply 'speak too loud'.
We managed to see the next three episodes of the Bourne series (although in rather accidental order):
However, we still have not seen the newest Bourne made in 2016. Maybe we will, soon.
It was interesting to watch the old cartoons:
  • 786. Popeye The Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves (1937) - duration 1 hour 21 min.
  • 787. Popeye The sailor Meets Sindbad The Sailor (1936) - duration about 97 minutes.
Funny stories. New (at that time), 3D-like way of making cartoons which were as long as regular movies too.

Our Movies of the Month

764. The Revenant - 2016 (adventure) - quite a different story/ movie, with lots of plot twists and turns. How could anybody survive such a struggle, fighting people and elements?

785. Battleship Potemkin - 1925 (drama) - a silent movie very different from the films made at the same time in the west. When you watch it, you have an impression you are watching an interesting documentary, not moving pictures/ a movie. The drama includes a first ever filmed scene - a baby carriage rolling down the stairs, which was copied later also in 'Untouchables'.

Sergei M. Eisnstein, the director of  Potemkin, made another great piece a few years later, in 1938. It was Alexander Nevsky with the epic 13th-century battle scenes on the frozen and cracking river. Wish we could see it again too.

The weakest film

769. Power, Passion & Murder - 1987 (drama), with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Very slow plot - we were waiting it would develop into something interesting but, instead of it, the film just suddenly ended. It was quite disappointing and a waste of time too. Considering, M. Pfeiffer was in it, we had expected something better. I assume, it is one of her worst movies. Not only the plot is weak but also the wardrobe, the clothes she is dressed in the movie, make her look awful.

On the other hand, Power, Passion & Murder is still better than Gravity as it, at least, contains more sophisticated lines than the latter one.

* It means that we had watched that many various shows by the end of November.

Movies Monthly: October

By the end of October, we reached #740. Meaning we had watched so many movies and various shows.

New series:
  • A Place You Call Home (Australian production) - we did not see the very first episodes of the series so we needed to figure out - who, what and what have happened. We caught up with the plot, more or less. :-)
  • The Durrells in Corfu (BBC) - since in my family we always have helped and supported each other, the older Durrell boys and the daughter seem to be rather selfish and useless. One could say the Durrells are not the brightest family on the block/on the island but we follow their story anyway.

Some more interesting movies:

681. Rock, Rock, Rock - 1956 (music) - the movie reminds old TV music shows - which were both the presentation of the contemporary, popular artists and a kind of concert. It was interesting to see the old time bands and singers, especially that we never heard about any of them. Besides Chuck Berry of course.

682. The Ladykillers - 2004 (comedy, crime-story), with Tom Hanks - at first we thought it would be something similar to 'Arsenic and Old Lace' in which two old ladies killed their tenants. It was quite a different story, though.

703. The Pink Panther - 2006 (comedy) - a new version of Inspector Clouseau's adventures. A bit different comparing to the old ones. This time the inspector solves a case not only because of his accidental and involuntary actions.

The Web

Our movies of the month:

691. In the Heart of the Sea - 2015 (adventure), directed by Ron Howard - a very well made film version of the famous novel 'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville.

605. Wicker Park - 2004 (drama), directed by Paul McGuigan - a simple story showed in a way that nothing seems simple in it. Intriguing, involving and misleading which makes watching the movie an interesting experience.

712. Vice Versa - 1948 (comedy), directed by Peter Ustinov.
Hilarious. The kind of humor, characters and many scenes of the movie very much reminded us the humor and characters presented later by Monty Python. It was like watching the original Monty Python before Monty Python. The comedy very much ahead of its times - or maybe just a very English-like sense of humor.

714. Spectre - 2015 (action), directed by Sam Mendes - the newest James Bond movie, with our favorite Bond impersonation (another one) created by Daniel Craig.

Our Halloween Movies:

735. Blood and Black Lace - 1964 (crime story, thriller) - French production - quite a good plot and a lot of old-time size women, and pretty wardrobe.

736. Young Frankenstein - 1974 (comedy), directed by Mel Brooks, with Gene Wilder - classic movie - still funny and entertaining.

738. Mark of the Vampire - 1935 (mystery, horror) - nothing in this movie is what it seems to be :-). It appeared to be more interesting that we thought.

739. Cat People - 1942 - by Radio Pictures (horror, fantasy) - the main female character has a really dark side. As usual 'Radio Pictures' means something a bit different and worth watching.

740. Devil's Bride - 1968 (horror) - a well-written story, although dark in its aspect, interesting - with no cheap effects such as slashing or blood splashing effects.

And what movies did you watch on Halloween?

Movies Monthly: September

By the end of September, we reached no. 692. Which means that during the past 2016 months, we had watched that many movies - various ones.

Detective stories

New (to us) series started:
Besides, Father Brown came back in September too.

Dramas

Poldark II (BBC) and Indian Summers II (BBC again) began.

Comedy shows

We enjoyed more jokes by Yakov Smirnoff:

605. Yakov Smirnoff - Just of the Boat

Most interesting movies of September

606. The Truman Show - 1998 (drama, SF) - with J. Carrey - directed by Peter Weir

608. The Bounty - 1984 (drama), with Mel Gibson - directed by Roger Donaldson

610. Lord of the Rings. The Fellowship of the Ring - 2001 (fantasy) - directed by Peter Jackson

636. Unforgiven - 1992 (western) - with C. Eastwood and G. Hackman - directed by C. Eastwood

638. The Secret Garden - 1993 (drama, family) - directed by Agnieszka Holland - In our opinion, it is the best movie version of the novel.

649. The Forger - 2015 (drama), with J. Travolta - directed by P. D'Ovidio

654. The Strip - 1951 (crime) - directed by Laszlo Kardos

662. Trail of the Pink Panther - 1982 (comedy) - directed by Blake Edwards.
The outfits worn by A. Hepburn in the movie were made by de Givenchy. Most quite wonderful, except the white one + the white hat, showed at the very beginning of the movie.

671. K-19 The Widowmaker - 2002 (drama, biography), with H. Ford - directed by Kathryn Bigelow

674. The Conversation - 1974 (thriller) - with G. Hackman - directed by F. F. Coppola

679.A Song to Remember - 1945 (drama, music) - directed by Charles Vidor
It is not a biography - the Chopin's life story pictured in the movie was not true, just made up by the filmmakers. But the music was real and only because of the compositions by Chopin I found the movie interesting.

Radio Pictures

669. Wide Open - 1930 (comedy)
670. The Roar of the Dragon - 1932 (adventure), directed by Wesley Ruggles
688. Gunga Din - 1939 (adventure) - directed by George Stevens - based on the poem by R. Kipling.

We had watched quite a few movies by Radio Picture/Radio Pictures - all of them were exquisite or really good. That is why, whenever we see at the beginning of the film, that it is a Radio Pictures production, we can expect it should be an interesting show. Considering the three movies listed above, we were not disappointed either. We especially Gunga Din, both the story and the character of that name as well.

Movies Monthly: August

I am still counting the movies we watch, just to find out whether the number reaches 1,000 by the end of the year. So far, we have seen 602 various films and tv shows.

In August, I asked members of The Polish Lady Abroad Club what their favorite detectives and detective stories were (the ladies, born in Poland, live in various countries/ all continents). I created a mini poll, listing a few series which the two of us enjoyed watching. Here are the voting results:
  1. Columbo - 5 votes
  2. Sherlock Holmes (traditional version) - 3 votes
  3. Hercule Poirot - 2
  4. Father Brown -1
0 votes:
  • Midsomer Murders
  • Murdoch Mysteries
  • Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
  • Miss Marple
  • Whitechapel

Apparently, the ladies either did not know the 0 votes series or they did not find them interesting. Or both. However, they named other crime and detective stories which they liked:

  • 5 votes: Twin Peaks
  • 4 votes - Sherlock (newest series) , Dexter, The Mentalist,
  • 3 votes - Dempsey & Makepeace, Monk,
  • 2 votes each: The Bridge (American version), True Detective, The Killing, Wallander, Father Dowling Mysteries,
  • 1 vote each: Hannibal, Ripper Street, CSI, Murder She Wrote, Gotham, Bones.
One could say - as many people, as many likes. I also watched some series mentioned above when I lived in Poland (Twin Peaks, Monk, Bron, Wallander, CSI-LA, Dempsey & Makepeace). In some cases, having seen a few episodes, I skipped following them, as they were not of my interest (Dexter).A long time ago, my favorite series was Father Dowling Mysteries as well. I have tried to find it on the local TV channels since I came to Texas, but so far - only a Christmas episode was aired last December.

Our movies of August were:

563. Brooklyn - 2015 (drama) - directed by John Crowley
590. Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 1993 (SF) - directed by Steven Spielberg
591. The Bourne Identity - 2002 (action) - by Doug Liman
592. The Pink Panther Strikes Again - 1976 (comedy) - directed by Blake Edwards
595. Braveheart - 1995 (drama) - directed by Mel Gibson
598.  Mars Attacks - 1996 (SF, comedy) - directed by Tim Burton
600. Forrest Gump - 1994 (drama) - directed by Robert Zemeckis

Other shows:

The 33 - directed by Patricia Riggen. A true story of 33 miners who survived in a collapsed mine for over two months.
  • 539. The 33 - 1945 (biography)
Yakov Smirnoff - We had not heard about this comedian before. His stand up shows made us laugh loud, many times. Totally our kind of humor - no bad language or low jokes just pure word play. Hilarious!
  • 599. Yakov Smirnoff: What a Country - 1996 (comedy)
Ted 2 -  Not our cup of tea at all. We watched only about a half of the movie - we did not find it funny (although we knew when we were supposed to laugh, we did not), so we stopped watching it.
  • 580. Ted 2 - 2015 (comedy)
The Tunnel (detective story) - the second season of this British-French series ended. We also enjoyed watching the final season of Inspector Lewis with Kevin Whately and Lawrence Fox

Are You Being Served (British comedy series) - in our opinion, John Inman as Mr. Humphries was the funniest character in the series, and a very talented actor as well.
  •  552. Are You Being Served: Bliss Girl - 1978 (comedy)
  •  573. Are You Being Served: Happy Returns - 1978 (comedy)

Curious documentaries:

The Olympics Berlin, 1936 - It was strange to learn that many things - which we had thought had been part of the Olympics since always - the Olympics torch, festive openings and such, were actually first time introduced by the Nazis in 1936.
  • 546.  The Nazi Games - Berlin 1936 - 2016 (documentary)

Nazi Secret Files - little-known facts about Nazis, their ideas, and developments.
  • 537. Nazi Secret Files: Nazi Killer Bugs (documentary),
  • 593. Nazi Secret Files: Hitler's Messiah Complex - 2016 (documentary),
  • 601. Nazi Secret Files - 2016 (documentary)
  • 564. Evolution of Evil - part 1 - 2014 (documentary)
  • 565. Evolution of Evil - part 2 - 2014 (documentary)

Movies Monthly: July

Our Movies of July:
Schindler's List - directed by Steven Spielberg,
Woman in Gold - directed by Simon Curtis,
Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars - directed by Brian Henson
Apocalypse WWI - written by Isabelle Clarke and Daniel Costelle.

Trees in July

In July, we finished watching Farscape. We not only managed to see the episodes we had missed, we also watched the final, 4th season. The two parts of The Peacekeeper Wars were like two cherries at the top of a great cake. They were the best of all the series!
Anyway, I think Farscape is the best SF series ever and I do not really know why we had not heard about it before. Maybe it was not advertised much?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - the turtles' costumes seem so obsolete nowadays...

Scream - we usually do not watch horrors. This one could be better, even being a horror. What spoilt the entire film (at least in my opinion), was the age of 'teenage' cast. The actors in their twenties/ thirties pretending high school kids were not convincing to me at all. The worst part of it were the men, who might be 30+, trying to copy 'brainless' teenage behavior. That was why I found the horror funny and rather fake instead of thrilling.

The Tunnel is based on the Swedish series The Bridge which I saw in Poland. Fortunately, the plot of The Tunnel is not a total copy of the original idea. It has been altered in a way which makes watching the series interesting and involving.

Apocalypse WWI - the two part documentary is a compilation of the original movies shot during the war. My great grandpa fought in WWI.  He lived in the part of Poland which was under Prussian rule, that was why he was drafted into the Prussian army. Like many other soldiers, great grandpa never came back home from the war. He was killed somewhere, maybe in some French forests. We do not know exactly where. All in all, whenever I watch video materials showing real WWI scenes and battlefields, I tend to think: ' Maybe one of those soldiers or dead corpses was him - Anton Dybowski, my great grandpa?'

My great grandfather
