Mysterious Mr. Shrader

As the family story says, our grandmother named one of her sons Shrader because it was the surname of her favorite teacher.

Some time ago, I researched a possible family connection with any Shraders and came across Wilhelm Shrader (born about 1724) who sailed to America with his parents but arrived at the New World alone. More about him in the post HERE.

Although that was all very interesting, Wilhelm Shrader was a rather distant and indirect ancestor. Maybe too distant to influence our grandmother's choice regarding naming her son.

See yourself

Wilhelm Shrader
his son Heinrich Jacob Schrader (b. 5 July 1750, Rimbeck, Halberstadt, Saxony, Germany/d. 1 Feb. 1829, Jefferson, Kentucky) + wife Anna Maria (b. about 1740, Jefferson, Kentucky)

his son Jacob Shreader (17 August 1771, Westmoreland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/d. 11 Sept. 1837, Oldham, Kentucky) + wife Eva Elizabeth (b. 26 April 1774, Bethel Township, Berks, Pennsylvania/d. August 1860, Oldham, Kentucky). They married on 27 August 1793.

Bethel Township, view from near Pleasant Grove Rd.

his son Elijah Shrader (b. about 1817, Oldham, Kentucky/d. 15 July 1845, Edgar County, Illinois)

his wife Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Shrader (b. about 1816, Madison Co., Virginia/d. 5 Oct 1849, Edgar County, Illinois)

Elijah and Sarah Ann married on 9 June 1834 in Oldham, Kentucky (1).

her sister Eliza Ann (Carpenter) Brown (b. 24 Sept. 1808, Madison, Virginia/d. 1 Nov. 1849, Oldham, Kentucky) married Mr. John Brown (b. 18 April 1811/d. 4 June 1841) on 20 April 1829 in Oldham, Kentucky (2).

her son John Liter Brown (b. March 1838 in Floydsburg, Oldham, KY) - a farmer and carpenter.

John relocated from Kentucky to Texas where he married (3) Miss Mary Susannah Lunsford (b. 17 May 1841, Kentucky/d. 9 August 1917, Allen, Collin, TX). She was the daughter of William Lunceford and Catherine Pottof Schrader, and a great-granddaughter of Wilhelm Shrader, the emigrant, mentioned above.

In 1880 John, his wife Mary Susannah, and their seven children lived in Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas. John was a farmer and he hired 11 men who also lived in the household (4). One of the workers was John's distant relative Albert Ross Wetsel.

John passed on 14 April 1913 in Collin County, Texas.

John and Mary's daughter Eliza Catherine (Brown) Angle (b. 5 May 1869, Collin, TX/d. 27 July 1964, Allen, Collin, TX).

Train Water Station, Allen, Texas

her husband James Lafayette Angle (b. 25 Feb. 1863, Tennessee/d. 27 June 1949, Allen, Collin, TX), son of Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.

James and Eliza Catherine married on 23 July 1890 and they had 8 children, two of whom died young.

The Census of 1940 recorded that Jim L Angle, his wife, son James L. Jr, Willie M (daughter-in-law) + a niece and nephew lived in Justice Precinct 6 (McKinney), Collin, Texas (5). The record contains a mistake. The children described as a nephew (Robert Doyle) and niece (Betty Sue) were actually James L Sr.'s grandchildren (6). Their parents were James Lafayette Jr. and Willa Mae (nee Starnes).

his younger sister Dora Elizabeth (Angel) Brown (b. 1 May 1868, Tennessee/d. 29 Dec. 1961, Plano, Collin, TX)

On 17 June 1880, Dora, her parents and siblings (Isabelle, James L., Albert Abner, Durrett Monroe, Nancy Neal, Charles Thomas, and John Walter lived at a farm in Justice Precinct 5, Collin, Texas (7).

her husband Robert Lee Howard - our great-uncle

his sister/our grandmother Rachel

I continued my research, looking for a Shrader family who lived in Texas, in the same area and at the same time where and when our grandma lived.

Well, I did find the Shraders in Texas.

George Hammond Shrader, a farmer, (b. on 11 Sept. 1825 in Warren County, Tennessee) and his wife Mary Inez Gibbs (b. 10 Nov. 1827, Warren, Tennessee) came to Collin County in Texas with their 12 children around 1871/1872.

In 1870 they all still lived in Civil District No. 9 in Coffee County, Tennessee (8). The twelfth child of George and Mary's was born on 26 Jan 1871 in Carroll County, Arkansas. Probably when the family was on their way to Texas. The supposition supports the fact that their last and thirteenth child was born in August 1874 in Frisco, Collin County, TX.

Anyway, the next Census which took place in 1880 recorded the Shrader family who dwelled in 6th Precinct of Collin County, TX.

George Hammond was a Civil War veteran. He served as Sergeant in 34th Regiment of 4th Tennessee Confederate Infantry (Capt. J. F. Ross' Company, Churchwell's Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers).
Af all his children only one had anything to do with teaching. It was George's third son and fourth child Houston Petway Shrader born 24 March 1855 in Coffee County, Tennessee.

Houston became a methodist preacher. He was a contemporary of our grandma Rachel. Actually, she was 11 years younger than him. They both lived in Collin County, Texas so, all in all, very likely it was Houston Petway Shrader who inspired grandma so much that she decided to name one of her sons after that Bible teacher.

Methodist Episcopal Curch in Fredericksburg, Texas

On 10 June 1886, 31-year-old Houston married Miss Ruby Ann Emeline Edgar (b. 5 July 1861 in Newton, TX).

Mr. Shrader was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South from 1885 to 1910. He also worked in the Euless Methodist Church (1893/1894). In 1912, during his retirement, he served as a supply pastor in the Electra Circuit.

What makes it all even more interesting, is the fact that Houston Petway and our grandma Rachel were related due to the marriage of Houston's youngest brother (the one born in Texas) Daniel Booker Shrader. The latter one married Miss Ada R Rogers on 27 Nov. 1897 in Collin, TX (9).

Ada's brother Addison Pierce Rogers was married to Rachel's brother William Monroe Howard's son-in-law's sister.

Here is the family line

Houston Petway Shrader
his brother Daniel Booker Shrader (b. 4 August 1874, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 1 Oct. 1937, Collin, TX) was the first postmaster of Frisco

his wife Ada R Rogers (b. 14 Feb. 1876, Rockhill, Collin, TX/d. 20 May 1909, Collin, TX) was the daughter of Beverly Leonidas Rogers and Elizabeth Rhoda Ware. She was the first wife of Daniel's. They married on 27 Nov. 1897 (10).

In 1900, the couple lived with their first child, one-year-old son Harold Pearson and Daniel's mother Mary Inez in Justice Precinct 6 (north half), Collin, TX (11). Ada died at birth of her fifth child, a girl who was stillborn.

her brother Addison Pierce Rogers (b. 29 Jan. 1879, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 22 June 1961, Frisco, Collin, TX), farmer

his wife Maude Lillian (Miller) Rogers (b. 1881 /d. Nov. 1953, Collin, TX), daughter of  Rev. Samuel William Miller and Martha Elizabeth Moore

Addison and Maude married on 15 Jan. 1902 in Collin, TX (12).

Possibly they had 4 children. At least that was what I found in the records.

her brother William Bryant Miller (b. 29 Nov. 1883, Tupelo, Mississippi/d. 5 Dec. 1971, McKinney, Collin, TX) was a salesman. The WW1 draft registration tells that William was tall, had blue eays and light hair (13).

his wife Geneva Clementine (Howard) Miller (b. 1 April 1889, Allen, Collin, TX/d. 10 June 1968, McKinney, Collin, TX)

William and Geneva's house was at 539 North Curch St., McKinney, TX (13).

her father William Monroe Howard - our great-uncle

his sister Rachel Clementine Howard - our grandmother

And how is Houston Petway Shrader related to Wilhelm Shrader the immigrant, mentioned at the beginning of this article? Maybe there is a more direct relation, but I have not found it. Actually, I have not looked for that since I found the Shrader family who settled in Colin, Texas.
That connection in our family tree goes through the Howard and Anglea family.

Houston Petway Shrader
his brother Daniel Booker Shrader
his wife Ada R Rogers
her brother Addison Pierce Rogers
his wife Maude Lillian (Miller) Rogers
her brother William Bryant Miller
his wife Geneva Clementine (Howard) Miller
her mother Isabel (Howard) Angle, wife of William Monroe Howard
her sister Nancy Neal (Angel) Brown
her husband John William Brown (b. 2 Sept. 1870, Collin, TX/d. 9 Dec. 1915, McKinney, Collin, TX)

Nannie and John married on 14 Dec. 1892 in Collin, Texas

his father John Liter Brown
his mother Eliza Ann (Carpenter) Brown
her sister Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Shrader
her husband Elijah Shrader
his father Jacob Shreader
his father Heinrich Jacob Schrader
his father Wilhelm Shrader

Houston Petway Shrader passed away on 18 May 1935 in his home in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas (14). He was buried in the Restland Cemetery, Dallas, TX.

Clint S Haggard and Kate Lunsford

According to "A History of Collin County, Texas", the Haggard family is of Danish ancestry, from Denmark they moved to England. I have found the information regarding the Haggards' English heritage at geni.com.

The one who moved the family line from England to Virginia was Lord James D Haggard, born on 29 August 1687 in  Bradenham Hall, Bradenham, England. He was the son of a rich English nobleman, Lord Anthony Haggard.

James did not wish to follow the career plans his father had for him and as a result of that, young Lord J D Haggard arrived in Norfolk, Virginia around 1698. He married Miss Elizabeth Lucy Gentry and became a tobacco planter.

James' son Nathaniel Haggard (Rev.) moved the family to Clark County, Kentucky in 1788.  Reverand's grandson was John W Haggard Jr. (born 17 March 1794 in Winchester, Clark, Kentucky).

When John was 17, he married Miss Mourning Quisenberry. She was the daughter of  James and Jane Quisenberry.

After Mourning's death in 1846, John and his son Clinton Shepard (born on 12 November 1838 in Winchester, Clark, Kentucky) came to Texas. They settled west of Plano

John and his son grew horses, cattle and mules and soon became vital members of the Plano community. They also supported education. Together with other local families they started the Haggard school which was later transformed in Add Run College. The College became Texas Christian University.

John died  on 11 December 1858.

About a year later, at the age of 21, Clinton married Miss Nancy Catherine Lunsford, the daughter of William Lunceford and Catherine Potoff Schrader. Nancy was also a sister of Fred Lunsford's father Simon Peter.

Mrs. Jack Bowman mentioned in the article was Madora Ellen Elizabeth Bowman (nee Dye), the wife of Jackson Harrison Bowman. Mrs. Bowman was a distant relation of Nancy and Clint's:

Madora Ellen Elizabeth
her sister  Mary Elizabeth (Dye) Aldridge (b. 20 Feb. 1873, Plano, Collin, TX/d. 9 Feb. 1957, Plano, TX)
her husband Joel Lively Aldridge (b. 8 Feb. 1864, Plano, Collin, TX/d. 20 Nov. 1946, Texas)
his brother James Shelton Aldridge (b. 23 May 1866, Collin, TX/d. 19 May 1918, Collin, TX)
his wife Annie Belle Haggard (the daughter of Clinton and Nancy C's)

Sadly, about a month later, on 6 October 1921, Mrs. Nancy Catherine Haggard passed away. In the newspaper obituary included below, we can read that the reason of her death was paralysis. I guess, she had had a stroke.

We can learn more about the circumstances of Nancy's departure from the article published in the Weekly Democrat-Gazette about a week later.

Nancy Catherine Haggard was buried at Bethany Cemetery.

The funeral service was attended by friends and relatives of Clint and Nancy's. It was a very solemn event, which also celebrated the life of Nancy Catherine and Clinton Shepard Haggard as a married couple. Both of them supported the local church, education and the local community in general.

Fred Lunsford is not the only one who connects us to the Haggard family. There is also a line which goes from Clinton S. Haggard via the Aldridge, and the Browns to our paternal grandmother Rachel Clementine Gant.

He was also a brother-in-law of our 1st cousin once removed Ethel Howard Richards.

Frederick Purney Lunsford was born on 31 July 1888 in Collin County, Texas. His parents were Simon Peter Lunsford and Mary Etta Haggard. The couple married on 24 October 1867 in Collin County, Texas.

The WW1 draft record also tells us that Fred had blue eyes and brown hair. He was medium height and was medium built.

Fredrick Pumia Lunsford (it seems the person who digitilized the record misspelled the middle name, I would it reads Purnia not Pumia).

On the day of the wedding, Fred was 29, his bride was nine years younger. She was born on 18 August 1897 in Allen, Collin County, Texas.

Unfortunately, Fred and Ethel's life together did not last long. Shortly after that census, three years after the wedding, they lived in Plano. Sadly, Ethel got sick with influenza which soon turned into pneumonia. She died at the age of 23, after a week of sickness on 15 February 1920 in St. Paul's Sanatorium in Dallas (1).

Ethel was buried at the Allen Cemetery.
Inscription: She was the sunshine of our life
I found more about the circumstances of her death when I was searching the information regarding Fred's siblings. See below, at the end of this post.

Fred and Ethel did not have any children. I do not know whether he remarried later. Probably not. In the WW2 draft record, he did not give any wife's name. The person who would always know his address was Mrs. W A Johnson who lived at Route #7, Dallas, Texas. At that time Fred's place of residence was 1603 Pocahontas Street in Dallas as well. Mrs. W. A. Johnson was his sister Sarah Jane born in 1885. Sarah married William Albert Johnson on 12 August 1902 in Grayson County, Texas (2).

According to the Census of 1920, Sarah Jane (3) and her husband had seven children -  a son Clarence Minor, born on 10 November 1904 in Plano, Dallas, TX (4), Wilma P., b. 1907, Carl L, b. 1910, Annie B., b. 1912, James G., b. 1914, Emma Jewel, born on 30 Sept. 1916 in Carrollton, Dallas, Texas (5), and a son Tom W., born in 1920. Fred and Sarah's mother Mary Etta lived with Sarah's family after the death of their father and Mary Etta's husband Peter Simon Lunsford.

As for Fred's siblings, I also found some info about:

1. His brother Simon Gibson Lunsford. He was born on 30 Sept. 1873 in Texas, died on 10 January 1953 in Snyder, Surry, Texas (6). His wife was Cyntha and they lived in Denton

2. His sister Lida Lee Lunsford Watterson was born on 25 Jan. 1890 in Collin, Texas. She lived at 2709 Lucas Dr. in Dallas. Lida died at the age of 70 on 11 Nov. 1940 in Dallas (7).

3. His brother Walter Clyde Lunsford was born on 14 Oct. 1891 in Collin, TX. He died from pneumonia when he was 28, on 7 Feb. 1920. Walter was buried on the same day (8).

According to the record included in the death certificate of Fred's wife Ethel, she got sick on 7 Feb. 1920 and died a week later. She might have caught a cold during Walter's funeral ceremony.

Apparently, also Fred's brother's wife died a week before Walter. Three deaths in the family, three weeks in a row. Very tragic.

5. His brother Clint Haggard, born on 5 Dec. 1880, lived 86 years. His place of residence was RD #2, Aubrey in Denton, Texas. Clint died in Denton Osteopathic Hospital on 28 April 1967 (10). His wife's name was Hattie.

6. His sister Mattie Sue was born on 31 Dec. 1878. She married P H Vince on 10 Sept. 1924 (11).
Mattie died in Fowler Home in Dallas on her 85th birthday, 31 Dec. 1963 (12).

7. His brother Robbert, born in 1874 in Texas (13).

8. His brother James, born in 1877 in Texas (13).

Ethel Howard and Her Society Life

Ethel Howard, our 1st cousin once removed, was mentioned in the post related to her parents, Robert Lee Howard and Dora Elizabeth Angel.

The Howards were part of the early Collin County prominent society. Their daily activities and family matters were announced in the social columns of the local newspapers. Studying those old papers you can learn what certain persons did, where they went or whom they met on a given day.

When Ethel grew up, her whereabouts and major life events also became "public", known to the citizens of Plano and McKinney, the readers of The Plano Star Courier and The Weekly Democrat-Gazette.

25 May 1912 - Saturday, Ethel was 19 then. A day in Frisco.

1/2 February 1913, a day with friends in Sherman

Miss Ethel Cothes was Mary Ethel Cothes, daughter of Herman Cothes and George Anna Brown of Kentucky. She was three years older than our Ethel (Mary Ethel Cothes was born on 17 January 1889).

23 May 1913 - Ethel Howard was 20 years old, she graduated from Plano High School.

Ethel is mentioned in the second place regarding the list of graduates. Since the names are not given in the alphabetical order, I assume her final results might have been the second best in the class.

Note that Ethel's class colors were purple and gold and the class flower was the sweet pea.
The class motto: "If I am not for myself who is? If for myself only what am I? If not now, when?" seems to be a paraphrase of the thought by Hillel, Jewish scholar and philosopher: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?" Ethics of the Fathers, 1:14

26 Sept. 1915, Sunday

7 November 1915, Sunday

A month after the family luncheon at Ethel's, she was hosted by Florence and Ethel Richards - her future sisters-in-law. Forrest Richards present at the dinner was her future brother-in-law.

There is a mistake in the surname Gant (not Grant). What's more? Clark Sexton became Viola Gant's husband in December 1915, Fred Lunsford married Ethel Richards (one of the hostesses) two years later.

Another piece of information about the same Sunday dinner and more mistakes - Claudie Howard, not Claudia. Misses Richards, not Miss Richard.
