John Walter Angel And Other Relations

Our relations to the Angel family go via the Howards and our grandmother Rachel. I wrote about the Angels a long time ago, but somehow, I missed one person then. Time to make it up.

John Walter Angel was born on 22 Sept. 1874 in Sumner County, Tennessee. His parents were Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.

When John was little, the family moved to Texas. On 29 August 1906, John Walter Angel married Miss Lula Vance. It happened in Ellis County, Texas. In the marriage record included below, the bride's first name is spelled in two different ways - first - it's Lula. A few lines below her name is given as Lela (1). In all later created documents, the latter versions repeated.

Anyway, Lela was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Jefferson Vance and Miss Willie Margaret Roulston. The girl was born on 31 July in Macon, Tennessee.

The young couple lived at #1 in Plano, Texas. John Walter was a farmer. The WW1 registration draft tells us that he was a man of medium height, medium built, his eyes were gray, and his hair was brown (2).

By 1920 John and Lela's family had grown. The two had 5 children. During the census of that year, they lived in Justice Precinct #5, in Plano, Texas. John ran a rented farm.

The census record informs that John Walter and Lela's place was close to the farm of Robert and Dora Howard's. Dora Angel was John's sister. Another relation lived nearby as well. It was Martha Alice Dupree nee Gant (b. 12 March 1870 in Sumner, TN). Her husband John Edward departed in 1914.

After her husband's death, Martha rented and ran a farm, together with her 10 children. The eldest son's (Glenn's) family lived at the farmhouse too.

Martha and John Walter were related via the Riggs and Gants.

Sheriff Albert McCauley

I came across the information who Albert McCauley was while searching for some details on the Texas Ranger W. J. McCauley. Although I did not find any family connection to the latter one, I am happy to be able to tell you more about Albert who appeared to be a lawman as well.

Albert McCauley was the son of Charles Leslie McCauley and Fannie Hicks. He was the couples' oldest child who came to this world on 15 Feb. 1873 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.

In 1880, Albert lived with his parents and family in Harrison, White County, Arkansas (1).

Birth Year (Estimated): 1873
Birthplace: Arkansas, United States
Father's Birthplace: North Carolina, United States
Mother's Birthplace: Tennessee, United States

Dora Mc Cauley, Daughter, Female, age 5, born Arkansas, United States
Sidney Mc Cauley, Son, Male, age 3, born Arkansas, United States
Lesley Mc Cauley, Son, Male, age 0, born Arkansas, United States
Walter Frohook, Other, Male, age 23, born Illinois, United States (farm helper)

By 1891 the family moved to Texas. There is a note published in The Democrat (issued in McKinney, Texas on Thursday, 16 April 1891) which informs that Mr. C. L. McCauley, a Wylie citizen, visited Plano on 14 April 1891 on business (2). C. L. was Charles Leslie, Albert's father.

On 15 Jan. 1896 Albert married Miss Ola May Day (b. in Feb. 1877 in Georgia), the daughter of James Marshall day and Nancy Katherine McIntyre (3).

The newspaper clipping included below informs that the marriage took place in Parker, Collin, Texas.

Parker, Texas

On 3 June 1900, Albert was probably visiting his parents when that year's Census clerk came to make records regarding Charles Leslie and Fannie's household. They lived with their children in Wylie (Justice Precinct 5, east part), Collin County, Texas. An interesting fact is that not far from their place, in Wylie, the family of our relative Lucillous Lee Gant was recorded as well. Studying the Census document I learned that L. Lee Gant was a blacksmith (4).

Anyway, why I say Albert was visiting his parents - because three days later, the same Census clerk came to Albert's home and listed Albert, Ola and their two children, daughter Lennie and son James Porter. Their household was in the same Wylie area where Albert's parents and siblings lived. Albert was a farmer then (5).

There is a mistake in that record - Albert's parents were born in North Carolina and Tennessee not in Arkansas.

Sometime later, Albert, Ola and children moved to McKinney. Albert was a Deputy Sheriff, nominated by Sheriff G. M. Eubanks (6).

On 3 November 1914, Albert McCauley was elected the Sheriff of McKinney (7).

Later in his life, Albert worked as a Special Agent with the Steam Railroad. In 1930, he was staying temporarily at the home of Mr. Luthur J Raley (Steam Railroad Inspector) in Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas. It is interesting that Albert's marital status was noted as "widowed" though his wife was alive then (8). You may say - so it is not our Albert but somebody else of the same name. Actually it is him. Ola McCauley, the wife of Albert and their children lived in McKinney then, and during the same Census of 1930, she was also recorded as "widowed" (9). maybe that was what the clerks did when a husband or wife was not living with their family. Very confusing regarding the ancestry research.

Arlee McCauley mentioned in the clipping was actually R Lee McCauley born on 24 Oct. 1902. He was a restaurant employee (11). John McCauley was George Garnett McCauley (b. 25 April 1908). Another mistake is the spelling of Lennie's husband's surname and his initials. Lennie's spouse was Mr. Frank J Felden and Vivian's husband was Malcolm Kinney (12).
Two other children of Albert and Ola's:
James Porter McCauley was born on 15 Oct. 1898, Dora Vivian on 4 Dec. 1904, Lennie in Feb 1897.

I have not any connections between Sergeant William J McCauley, Texas Ranger and Sheriff Albert McCauley. However, their fathers were both born in North Carolina so there might be a family connection there.
Here is the family line which connects us to Mr Albert McCauley.

his wife Ola May (Day) McCauley

her brother William Henry Day (b. 7 July 1871, Georgia/d. 24 June 1940, McKinney, Collin, Texas), a farmer

Mysterious Mr. Shrader

As the family story says, our grandmother named one of her sons Shrader because it was the surname of her favorite teacher.

Some time ago, I researched a possible family connection with any Shraders and came across Wilhelm Shrader (born about 1724) who sailed to America with his parents but arrived at the New World alone. More about him in the post HERE.

Although that was all very interesting, Wilhelm Shrader was a rather distant and indirect ancestor. Maybe too distant to influence our grandmother's choice regarding naming her son.

See yourself

Wilhelm Shrader
his son Heinrich Jacob Schrader (b. 5 July 1750, Rimbeck, Halberstadt, Saxony, Germany/d. 1 Feb. 1829, Jefferson, Kentucky) + wife Anna Maria (b. about 1740, Jefferson, Kentucky)

his son Jacob Shreader (17 August 1771, Westmoreland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/d. 11 Sept. 1837, Oldham, Kentucky) + wife Eva Elizabeth (b. 26 April 1774, Bethel Township, Berks, Pennsylvania/d. August 1860, Oldham, Kentucky). They married on 27 August 1793.

Bethel Township, view from near Pleasant Grove Rd.

his son Elijah Shrader (b. about 1817, Oldham, Kentucky/d. 15 July 1845, Edgar County, Illinois)

his wife Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Shrader (b. about 1816, Madison Co., Virginia/d. 5 Oct 1849, Edgar County, Illinois)

Elijah and Sarah Ann married on 9 June 1834 in Oldham, Kentucky (1).

her sister Eliza Ann (Carpenter) Brown (b. 24 Sept. 1808, Madison, Virginia/d. 1 Nov. 1849, Oldham, Kentucky) married Mr. John Brown (b. 18 April 1811/d. 4 June 1841) on 20 April 1829 in Oldham, Kentucky (2).

her son John Liter Brown (b. March 1838 in Floydsburg, Oldham, KY) - a farmer and carpenter.

John relocated from Kentucky to Texas where he married (3) Miss Mary Susannah Lunsford (b. 17 May 1841, Kentucky/d. 9 August 1917, Allen, Collin, TX). She was the daughter of William Lunceford and Catherine Pottof Schrader, and a great-granddaughter of Wilhelm Shrader, the emigrant, mentioned above.

In 1880 John, his wife Mary Susannah, and their seven children lived in Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas. John was a farmer and he hired 11 men who also lived in the household (4). One of the workers was John's distant relative Albert Ross Wetsel.

John passed on 14 April 1913 in Collin County, Texas.

John and Mary's daughter Eliza Catherine (Brown) Angle (b. 5 May 1869, Collin, TX/d. 27 July 1964, Allen, Collin, TX).

Train Water Station, Allen, Texas

her husband James Lafayette Angle (b. 25 Feb. 1863, Tennessee/d. 27 June 1949, Allen, Collin, TX), son of Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.

James and Eliza Catherine married on 23 July 1890 and they had 8 children, two of whom died young.

The Census of 1940 recorded that Jim L Angle, his wife, son James L. Jr, Willie M (daughter-in-law) + a niece and nephew lived in Justice Precinct 6 (McKinney), Collin, Texas (5). The record contains a mistake. The children described as a nephew (Robert Doyle) and niece (Betty Sue) were actually James L Sr.'s grandchildren (6). Their parents were James Lafayette Jr. and Willa Mae (nee Starnes).

his younger sister Dora Elizabeth (Angel) Brown (b. 1 May 1868, Tennessee/d. 29 Dec. 1961, Plano, Collin, TX)

On 17 June 1880, Dora, her parents and siblings (Isabelle, James L., Albert Abner, Durrett Monroe, Nancy Neal, Charles Thomas, and John Walter lived at a farm in Justice Precinct 5, Collin, Texas (7).

her husband Robert Lee Howard - our great-uncle

his sister/our grandmother Rachel

I continued my research, looking for a Shrader family who lived in Texas, in the same area and at the same time where and when our grandma lived.

Well, I did find the Shraders in Texas.

George Hammond Shrader, a farmer, (b. on 11 Sept. 1825 in Warren County, Tennessee) and his wife Mary Inez Gibbs (b. 10 Nov. 1827, Warren, Tennessee) came to Collin County in Texas with their 12 children around 1871/1872.

In 1870 they all still lived in Civil District No. 9 in Coffee County, Tennessee (8). The twelfth child of George and Mary's was born on 26 Jan 1871 in Carroll County, Arkansas. Probably when the family was on their way to Texas. The supposition supports the fact that their last and thirteenth child was born in August 1874 in Frisco, Collin County, TX.

Anyway, the next Census which took place in 1880 recorded the Shrader family who dwelled in 6th Precinct of Collin County, TX.

George Hammond was a Civil War veteran. He served as Sergeant in 34th Regiment of 4th Tennessee Confederate Infantry (Capt. J. F. Ross' Company, Churchwell's Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers).
Af all his children only one had anything to do with teaching. It was George's third son and fourth child Houston Petway Shrader born 24 March 1855 in Coffee County, Tennessee.

Houston became a methodist preacher. He was a contemporary of our grandma Rachel. Actually, she was 11 years younger than him. They both lived in Collin County, Texas so, all in all, very likely it was Houston Petway Shrader who inspired grandma so much that she decided to name one of her sons after that Bible teacher.

Methodist Episcopal Curch in Fredericksburg, Texas

On 10 June 1886, 31-year-old Houston married Miss Ruby Ann Emeline Edgar (b. 5 July 1861 in Newton, TX).

Mr. Shrader was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South from 1885 to 1910. He also worked in the Euless Methodist Church (1893/1894). In 1912, during his retirement, he served as a supply pastor in the Electra Circuit.

What makes it all even more interesting, is the fact that Houston Petway and our grandma Rachel were related due to the marriage of Houston's youngest brother (the one born in Texas) Daniel Booker Shrader. The latter one married Miss Ada R Rogers on 27 Nov. 1897 in Collin, TX (9).

Ada's brother Addison Pierce Rogers was married to Rachel's brother William Monroe Howard's son-in-law's sister.

Here is the family line

Houston Petway Shrader
his brother Daniel Booker Shrader (b. 4 August 1874, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 1 Oct. 1937, Collin, TX) was the first postmaster of Frisco

his wife Ada R Rogers (b. 14 Feb. 1876, Rockhill, Collin, TX/d. 20 May 1909, Collin, TX) was the daughter of Beverly Leonidas Rogers and Elizabeth Rhoda Ware. She was the first wife of Daniel's. They married on 27 Nov. 1897 (10).

In 1900, the couple lived with their first child, one-year-old son Harold Pearson and Daniel's mother Mary Inez in Justice Precinct 6 (north half), Collin, TX (11). Ada died at birth of her fifth child, a girl who was stillborn.

her brother Addison Pierce Rogers (b. 29 Jan. 1879, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 22 June 1961, Frisco, Collin, TX), farmer

his wife Maude Lillian (Miller) Rogers (b. 1881 /d. Nov. 1953, Collin, TX), daughter of  Rev. Samuel William Miller and Martha Elizabeth Moore

Addison and Maude married on 15 Jan. 1902 in Collin, TX (12).

Possibly they had 4 children. At least that was what I found in the records.

her brother William Bryant Miller (b. 29 Nov. 1883, Tupelo, Mississippi/d. 5 Dec. 1971, McKinney, Collin, TX) was a salesman. The WW1 draft registration tells that William was tall, had blue eays and light hair (13).

his wife Geneva Clementine (Howard) Miller (b. 1 April 1889, Allen, Collin, TX/d. 10 June 1968, McKinney, Collin, TX)

William and Geneva's house was at 539 North Curch St., McKinney, TX (13).

his sister Rachel Clementine Howard - our grandmother

And how is Houston Petway Shrader related to Wilhelm Shrader the immigrant, mentioned at the beginning of this article? Maybe there is a more direct relation, but I have not found it. Actually, I have not looked for that since I found the Shrader family who settled in Colin, Texas.
That connection in our family tree goes through the Howard and Anglea family.

Miss Nannie Angel Brown

Nannie Angel Brown is one of the persons/relatives whose photographs are included in Aunt Lula's album (I wrote about the album here).

Miss Nannie Angel Brown

When I first saw the album and the photos, I thought that Angel was a middle name. Later it appeared to be the lady's maiden name. The surname occurs in the family tree in various spelling options: Angel, Angle, and Anglea. The latter one seems to be the original form changed within the years, (possibly by clerks who recorded the name ?).

Anyway, Nancy Neal Angel was the daughter of Marcus Lafayette Anglea and Mammie Erena Anglea nee Jones.

Marcus Lafayette Anglea was born in Gallatin, Sumner County, TN on November 9, 1835, he died in Edna, Jackson County, TX on August 26, 1892.

Mammie was born on January 5, 1838, in TN, and she died in Desdemona, Eastland County, Texas on December 20, 1878. Mammie and Marcus married on January 19, 1859, in Sumner Co., Tennessee. Mammie was 18 and Marcus was 24.

Nancy Neal Angel was the eighth child of the Anglea couple. She was born March 9, 1870, in Sumner Co., TN. Nannie moved to Texas with her parents and siblings probably in or before 1876. The records show that in 1880 the Anglea family lived at Dist. 3, Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas (1). Ten years earlier, they were still in Tennessee (2).

At the age of 22, Nannie got married. Her spouse, a year older than the bride, was Mr. John William Brown (born on September 2, 1870, in Collin Co., Texas), son of John Liter Brown and Mary Susannah Lunsford. The ceremony took place on December 14, 1892, in Collin County, Texas.

I have had difficulties with finding the information on Nannies and John's children.  So far I have come across a record on one child only - William L Brown born on August 31, 1983. Nannie gave birth to the boy when she was twenty-two. William married Alma M. He died on July 23, 1985.

When Nannie was forty-five, John William Brown, her husband, contracted typhoid and after twenty-one days he passed away on December 9, 1915, in Collin Co., TX.

He was buried in Allen at Allen Cemetary, Collin Co., TX

Nancy Neal Brown died at the age of eighty-seven, on July 30, 1957, in McKinney, Collin County, Texas. Her body rests at the same cemetery where her husband was buried, in Allen TX.

I wish I knew more about Miss Nannie Angel Brown, more than dates and numbers only as digits do not make a person. On the other hand, it is good to know who the lady in the pictures was and at least a bit about her and her life.

Charles Thomas Angle
born on April 16, 1873, in Sumner Co., TN, he died on August 16, 1923, in  Dallas. Possibly, the cause of death was hanging - more information regarding Charlie - in this POST.

He had two wives:

1. Evalyn Magruder whom he married on December 7, 1898, in San Angelo, Tom Green, TX. They had one child. No records on their divorce though.

2. Alice Evelyn Coleman whom he married on March 18, 1907, in Sherman, Grayson, TX. They had six children (?).

John Walter Angel - born on September 22, 1874, in Tennessee, he died on January 12, 1970, in Leonard, Fannin County, TX. More about him HERE.

Willie Mattie Angle - the youngest of the Angle children was born on December 5, 1876, in Collin County, TX. Unfortunately, the child did not live very long, the boy died on January 29, 1879, in Collin, TX.

* I guess, something must be wrong with the records - possible mistake? James born in Feb 1863, Henretta in June, the same year?
