John Walter Angel And Other Relations

Our relations to the Angel family go via the Howards and our grandmother Rachel. I wrote about the Angels a long time ago, but somehow, I missed one person then. Time to make it up.

John Walter Angel was born on 22 Sept. 1874 in Sumner County, Tennessee. His parents were Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.

When John was little, the family moved to Texas. On 29 August 1906, John Walter Angel married Miss Lula Vance. It happened in Ellis County, Texas. In the marriage record included below, the bride's first name is spelled in two different ways - first - it's Lula. A few lines below her name is given as Lela (1). In all later created documents, the latter versions repeated.

Anyway, Lela was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Jefferson Vance and Miss Willie Margaret Roulston. The girl was born on 31 July in Macon, Tennessee.

The young couple lived at #1 in Plano, Texas. John Walter was a farmer. The WW1 registration draft tells us that he was a man of medium height, medium built, his eyes were gray, and his hair was brown (2).

By 1920 John and Lela's family had grown. The two had 5 children. During the census of that year, they lived in Justice Precinct #5, in Plano, Texas. John ran a rented farm.

The census record informs that John Walter and Lela's place was close to the farm of Robert and Dora Howard's. Dora Angel was John's sister. Another relation lived nearby as well. It was Martha Alice Dupree nee Gant (b. 12 March 1870 in Sumner, TN). Her husband John Edward departed in 1914.

After her husband's death, Martha rented and ran a farm, together with her 10 children. The eldest son's (Glenn's) family lived at the farmhouse too.

Martha and John Walter were related via the Riggs and Gants.

Gerard Alexander Foote

Mr. Foote was one of the early settlers in Collin County. He was born on 28 Sept. 1823 in Fauquier County, Virginia to Mr. Alexander Foote and Miss Jane Elliott Washington.

When Gerard was nine years old, the family moved to Noxubee County Mississippi. Gerard Alexander Foote attended Centenary college in Mississippi.

In 1845, Dr. Foote came to Collin County.  A year later, he became the surgeon of Capt. William Fitzhugh's Texas Rangers.  On 11 Nov. 1847, our man married Miss Eliza Jane McGarrah, the daughter of Colonel J. McGarrah.

Gerard Alexander Foote practiced and studied medicine at the same time. In 1856, Mr. Foote graduated from Memphis Medical College. Besides being a local GP, during the Civil War, G A Foote also served as a surgeon in the 11th Texas Confederate Cavalry (under Col. William Young).
The doctor was dedicated to his work and the citizens of the local community.

Mr. G A Foote assisted in organizing a charter of St. John's Lodge in Collin County. He was also a member of Knights Templar McKinney Commandery No. 34.

Later, Dr. Gerard was also a member of the Texas legislature and, together with Mr. Henry C Herndon ran a Foote & Herndon drugstore in McKinney.

In 1880, Dr. Foote switched from merchandising to financial business - he was a co-founder of Collin County Bank and became its president.

Gerard's wife passed away on 13 September 1889. About nine years later, on 11 April 1898, Mr. Foote married Miss Corinne Lee from Clarksville, Texas.

Gerard Alexander Foote lived 78 years, 9 months, and 18 days. The man died at 9:20 am on Thursday, 17 July 1902, in his house in McKinney.

Henry Montgomery Dye

I have already mentioned Mr. Henry M Dye in the post related to his daughter Madora Ellen and her husband Jackson Harrison Bowman. However, since he was the first doctor and one of the early settlers of Plano, Texas he deserves more than a note in another article.

Henry Montgomery Dye is credited for naming the city of Plano (the name related to the Spanish word "llano" = plain).

Henry Montgomery Dye, the eldest child of Thomas Dye and Mary Duey, was born on 30 September 1830 in Wood County, Virginia. In 1848, Henry moved to Plano. The 20-year-old physician was registered by the clerk of 1850 Census at the household of Mr. Joseph Klepper (1).

At the same time, Henry's parents and siblings lived in Dallas County, Texas. Mr. Thomas Dye was a carpenter, Henry's younger brother John ran a farm (2).

When Henry was 24, he married Miss Sarah Skiles (b. 28 Feb. 1834 in Three Springs, Warren, Kentucky). The ceremony took place on 27 April 1854. Henry's spouse was the daughter of Mr. Jacob Clemens Skiles and Miss Sarah Elizabeth Alice Moore.

During the Civil War, Dr. Henry Dye served as the Confederate Army surgeon in Little Rock and Camden, Arkansas.

Fort Southerland area, Camden, Arkansas

In 1870, Henry, Sarah, and their children were recorded during the census. The family lived in Plano, Precinct #5, Collin, Texas. Sarah's parents lived with them as well (3).

Luria Dye, Female, age 0, born Texas
Jacob Skiles, Male, age 65, born Kentucky
Sarah Skiles, Female, age 55, born Kentucky
Clement Patton, Male, age 31, born Alabama (physician)

Dr. H. M. Dye was also one of the main founders of the Presbyterian Church in Plano (1871).

Henry and Sarah Dye had nine children - 2 sons and 7 girls:
  • Henry Montgomery Jr.  (b. 30 Nov. 1857/d. 10 March 1927) married Caroline Phillipena Lehmann,
  • Euphemia Priscilla (b. 17 May 1859/d. 20 Feb. 1926) married William G Keyser,
  • Eliza Belle (b. 21 March 1861/d. 9 Dec. 1891) married Andrew Benjamin Angel, our 2nd cousin twice removed, on 9 Dec. 1880 (4),

  • Addie Lee (b. 23 June 1866/d. 5 Jan. 1930) married John Wesley Brown on 9 Dec. 1880 (5),

  • Minnie M. born in about 1868 married probably Mr. Andrew Keyser * (?) abt. 1885,
  • Lura P. (b. 16 March 1870/d. 5 March 1941) married Robert H Coleman on 20 Feb. 1890 (6),

  • Thomas Clemens (b. 29 Feb. 1876/d. 18 August 1952), a physician, married Emma L McKamey on 7 March 1906 (8).

Henry got ill and the family moved to Mason County with the hope that it would help the father of the family recover. However, it was his wife Sarah Elizabeth who left this world first, on 6 March 1878. After that, Henry came back to Plano. His health gradually deteriorated. He died of TB on 10 August 1878 in Plano.

There are three indirect family lines which connect us to Mr. Henry M Dye of Plano.

Sheriff Albert McCauley

I came across the information who Albert McCauley was while searching for some details on the Texas Ranger W. J. McCauley. Although I did not find any family connection to the latter one, I am happy to be able to tell you more about Albert who appeared to be a lawman as well.

Albert McCauley was the son of Charles Leslie McCauley and Fannie Hicks. He was the couples' oldest child who came to this world on 15 Feb. 1873 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.

In 1880, Albert lived with his parents and family in Harrison, White County, Arkansas (1).

Father's Birthplace: North Carolina, United States

Dora Mc Cauley, Daughter, Female, age 5, born Arkansas, United States
Sidney Mc Cauley, Son, Male, age 3, born Arkansas, United States
Lesley Mc Cauley, Son, Male, age 0, born Arkansas, United States
Walter Frohook, Other, Male, age 23, born Illinois, United States (farm helper)

By 1891 the family moved to Texas. There is a note published in The Democrat (issued in McKinney, Texas on Thursday, 16 April 1891) which informs that Mr. C. L. McCauley, a Wylie citizen, visited Plano on 14 April 1891 on business (2). C. L. was Charles Leslie, Albert's father.

On 15 Jan. 1896 Albert married Miss Ola May Day (b. in Feb. 1877 in Georgia), the daughter of James Marshall day and Nancy Katherine McIntyre (3).

The newspaper clipping included below informs that the marriage took place in Parker, Collin, Texas.

Clipping source: Thompson, F. C. The Democrat. (McKinney, Tex.), Vol. 12, No. 49, Ed. 1 Thursday, January 23, 1896, newspaper, January 23, 1896; McKinney, Texas. Parker, Texas

On 3 June 1900, Albert was probably visiting his parents when that year's Census clerk came to make records regarding Charles Leslie and Fannie's household. They lived with their children in Wylie (Justice Precinct 5, east part), Collin County, Texas. An interesting fact is that not far from their place, in Wylie, the family of our relative Lucillous Lee Gant was recorded as well. Studying the Census document I learned that L. Lee Gant was a blacksmith (4).

Anyway, why I say Albert was visiting his parents - because three days later, the same Census clerk came to Albert's home and listed Albert, Ola and their two children, daughter Lennie and son James Porter. Their household was in the same Wylie area where Albert's parents and siblings lived. Albert was a farmer then (5).

There is a mistake in that record - Albert's parents were born in North Carolina and Tennessee not in Arkansas.

Sometime later, Albert, Ola and children moved to McKinney. Albert was a Deputy Sheriff, nominated by Sheriff G. M. Eubanks (6).

On 3 November 1914, Albert McCauley was elected the Sheriff of McKinney (7).

Later in his life, Albert worked as a Special Agent with the Steam Railroad. In 1930, he was staying temporarily at the home of Mr. Luthur J Raley (Steam Railroad Inspector) in Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas. It is interesting that Albert's marital status was noted as "widowed" though his wife was alive then (8). You may say - so it is not our Albert but somebody else of the same name. Actually it is him. Ola McCauley, the wife of Albert and their children lived in McKinney then, and during the same Census of 1930, she was also recorded as "widowed" (9). maybe that was what the clerks did when a husband or wife was not living with their family. Very confusing regarding the ancestry research.

Arlee McCauley mentioned in the clipping was actually R Lee McCauley born on 24 Oct. 1902. He was a restaurant employee (11). John McCauley was George Garnett McCauley (b. 25 April 1908). Another mistake is the spelling of Lennie's husband's surname and his initials. Lennie's spouse was Mr. Frank J Felden and Vivian's husband was Malcolm Kinney (12).
Two other children of Albert and Ola's:
James Porter McCauley was born on 15 Oct. 1898, Dora Vivian on 4 Dec. 1904, Lennie in Feb 1897.

I have not any connections between Sergeant William J McCauley, Texas Ranger and Sheriff Albert McCauley. However, their fathers were both born in North Carolina so there might be a family connection there.
Here is the family line which connects us to Mr Albert McCauley.

Gladys Loyd - Who Is This Little Cutie?

This picture was given to me with an attached question: "Who is this mystery girl?".

The photo is signed on the other side. Here is the girl's name.

I checked our family tree to see if there are any Loyd people in it. There is, one only - Matilda M Perdue nee Loyd (b. 18 Sept. 1828 in Sumner, Tennessee/d. 5 August 1902, Portland, Sumner, Tennessee). She was our great-grandmother's sister's mother-in-law.

Matilda M (Loyd) Perdue
her son Perry Washington Perdue (b. 12 June 1850, Tennessee/d. 27 Dec. 1943, Portland, Tennessee)
his wife Martha C (Shanklin) Perdue (b. 21 Jan. 1843, North Carolina/d. 10 March 1895, Sumner, Tennessee)
her sister Helen Jane (Shanklin) Gant - our great-grandmother

All the above people were born in the 1800s before our ancestors came to Texas. No sign of little Gladys who was most certainly born much later.

Looking at the girl, her hairstyle, my guess is the picture was probably taken in the early 1930s. So Gladys was presumably born in the late 1920s or at the very beginning of the 30s. If the photo was in the family album, signed by either our aunt or mom, the girl most likely would be a child of a relation.

The old newspapers which I looked through tell that there was a Loyd/Lloyd family in Collin County, where our ancestors lived as well. However, so far, there is too little data to find any family connection.

Maybe little Gladys is still alive? These days she would not be that little, though.

Eugene Chaddick, age 30, mentioned above, was William and his first wife's son. Eugene's wife passed away not long before the Census, between 1898 and 1900.

The record says that Ruth had nine children and seven of them was alive at the time in July 1900.
She had had three children with her first husband Ammon Cochran, only one girl, named Lillie Mae (born in 1876) survived. Lillie got married in 1894. On 6 July 1900 she had already lived with her husband Henry L Bradshaw (2).

In 1902, tragedy touched the family. William's oldest son, William T was found dead. The article contains a mistake, regarding the first letter of William Jr.'s middle name.

How it all ended, whether the defendants were found innocent or guilty, I do knot know. I have found no more information on the tragic case.

On 11 Dec. in the same year 1904, a much happier event took place - William Hewett Jr. married Miss Ruby Lee Gregory (3).

Somehow, during the 1910 Census only William Hewett Sr. and his wife were registered as the dwellers of their household. It seems strange as some of their children were still not married. Maybe they were not at home then?

"United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M2SC-72X : accessed 16 January 2019), W H Chaddick, Plano, Collin, Texas, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 22, sheet 13A, family 277, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1982), roll 1540; FHL microfilm 1,375,553

At the beginning of 1914, Ruth's health deterorated.

At the same time, there was an Automobile Contest organized by the Whitten-Sandifer Company. The contestants were ladies of the Plano society, the stake was a Ford automobile. The contest participants did not have to do anything - it was the citizens of Plano who voted for their favorite lady and chose the winner at the same time. The end of the contest + its results were to be announced on 24 December.

Ruth Chaddick took part in the competition as well. At first, I though it was William Hewett's daughter, but next, looking through the old newpspers, I noticed that the same Ruth Chaddick played to win a Ford also years later, when Ruth the younger, could have possibly been married. Anyway, it seems it was an annual contest. I cannot tell you who won the 1914 edition as I did not find the name of the lucky lady in the newspapers printed in December.

About a year later, William Hewett's heart failed. He had heart surgery and died from mitral disease on 10 March 1920. William H. was buried at the Plano Cemetery on the next day.

As for Ruth and the children of William Hewett Sr.'s;

Earl F Chaddick, the second son of Ruth and William's, was a farmer. He lived with his wife Lillie at R#7, Box 103 in Forth Worth. He was medium height and medium built, his eyes were blue and his hair was light. (5) Earl died from TB which he had suffered from for two years and six months. (6)

Clyde Chaddick, the third son of Ruth and William Hewett's was 5 feet 3 inches tall, he had black hair and brown eyes. He must have married after 1917. On 6 June 1917,  the day of his WW1 draft registration, he was still single. At that time Clyde worked as an automobile dealer at the Chaddick Parlore Inc. in Corpus Cristi, TX.  (7)

During WW1, he served in CMC Repair Shop 304 at Fort Sam, Houston, Texas. Clyde Chaddick was appointed Private 1 class on 31 July 1918, and later was promoted to Sergeant (on 24 Sept. 1918). When the war ended, Clyde was honorably discharged on 11 Jan. 1919, during demobilization. (8)
Years later, the man married Rosina Ledbetter. Their first child Mary Lou was born in 1930. (9) The family of Clyde's lived at 523 W. Elsmere, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The house, built in 1923, still exists. Clyde worked for Lincoln national Life Insurance Co. as an insurance agent. (10)
He died at the age of 55, on 21 August 1943, due to hypertnesion and coronary occlusion. (11)

Ruth Brent, the oldest daughter of Ruth and William's, worked as a private duty practical nurse. Her husband John Beaty passed in 1959 (12). At the end of her life, Ruth lived in a nursing home in Denton where she died due to cardiovascular disease on 22 Oct. 1976. (13)

Ora Thompson, Ruth's younger sister, lived with her husband in Plano. She passed away at the age of 70, on 15 November 1965. (14)

I have not found much info on Ruth and William's fourth son Mark Chaddick. He was born 20 Feb. 1898 and he helped his father run the farm. The WW1 registration record also says that Mark was short, medium built, had brown eyes and dark hair. (15)

Kruger L Chaddick was the youngest son of Ruth and William's. He worked as a wire maker at Texas Wire & Cable Company. Kruger's first wife Lennie died from TB on 27 Nov. 1927 (16). The man remarried two years later on the day 8 June. His second wife was Lillian Largent Mallow (17). Kruger Chaddick passed at the age of 61 in his home which was at 800 15th Street in Plano. On 31 Jan. 1962 his heart stopped (18).

Ruth Chaddick, the second wife of William Hewett's died before WW2 started, on 1 July 1939 (19).

Children from William's first marriage

William T was a saddler. He probably married Miss Rebecca Bumpass on 19 November 1887.

Record Source:
"Texas, County Marriage Records, 1837-1965," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K61P-P78: 10 December 2017), Wm Chaddick and Rebecca Bumpass, 23 Nov 1887; citing Marriage, citing Collin, Texas, United States, Texas State Library, Archives Division, and various Texas county clerks; FHL microfilm 1,289,597.

Not much is known about Eugene Chaddick, William T's younger brother. Maybe he remarried ? Anyway, in 1900, he lived in Justice Precinct 5, between Dallas/McKinney Rd. and Muddy Creek in Collin County Texas (20). Ten years later, he lived with his 12-year-old son Vergennes in Nocona, Montague, Texas (21).

Lily Forman, Eugene's younger sister, lived not far from her brother (in 1900). Together with her husband Clint and son Ray, they dwelled two houses away from the house of Eugene's. Lilly and Clint's home was recorded during the Census as house #359, Eugene's place was #361(22). Lily outlived her husband who died in 1918 (23). She left this world years later in Lamar, TX on 9 Dec. 1944 (24).

Sallie Elizabeth Taylor was two years younger than Lily. I can only tell you about her that in 1900 she lived with her husband T C Taylor and four children in Justice Precinct 5 (west Plano) (25). Ten years later, the couple had two sons more and they had already moved to Justice Precinct 2 in San Saba, Texas (26).

It seems that in 1900, the siblings lived close two each other. Genoa lived with her husband at his mother's house which was also in Justice P. #5 in Plano (27). Meroney Forman was a dairy farmer. Probably, Genoa and Meroney had no children. Genoa's spouse passed in 1945 due to cardiac failure (28). She died five years later, on 14 Sept. 1949, from liver damage (cirrhosis) (29).
