Henry Montgomery Dye

I have already mentioned Mr. Henry M Dye in the post related to his daughter Madora Ellen and her husband Jackson Harrison Bowman. However, since he was the first doctor and one of the early settlers of Plano, Texas he deserves more than a note in another article.

Henry Montgomery Dye is credited for naming the city of Plano (the name related to the Spanish word "llano" = plain).

Henry Montgomery Dye, the eldest child of Thomas Dye and Mary Duey, was born on 30 September 1830 in Wood County, Virginia. In 1848, Henry moved to Plano. The 20-year-old physician was registered by the clerk of 1850 Census at the household of Mr. Joseph Klepper (1).

At the same time, Henry's parents and siblings lived in Dallas County, Texas. Mr. Thomas Dye was a carpenter, Henry's younger brother John ran a farm (2).

When Henry was 24, he married Miss Sarah Skiles (b. 28 Feb. 1834 in Three Springs, Warren, Kentucky). The ceremony took place on 27 April 1854. Henry's spouse was the daughter of Mr. Jacob Clemens Skiles and Miss Sarah Elizabeth Alice Moore.

During the Civil War, Dr. Henry Dye served as the Confederate Army surgeon in Little Rock and Camden, Arkansas.

Fort Southerland area, Camden, Arkansas

In 1870, Henry, Sarah, and their children were recorded during the census. The family lived in Plano, Precinct #5, Collin, Texas. Sarah's parents lived with them as well (3).

Household

Luria Dye, Female, age 0, born Texas
Jacob Skiles, Male, age 65, born Kentucky
Sarah Skiles, Female, age 55, born Kentucky
Clement Patton, Male, age 31, born Alabama (physician)

Dr. H. M. Dye was also one of the main founders of the Presbyterian Church in Plano (1871).

Henry and Sarah Dye had nine children - 2 sons and 7 girls:
  • Henry Montgomery Jr.  (b. 30 Nov. 1857/d. 10 March 1927) married Caroline Phillipena Lehmann,
  • Euphemia Priscilla (b. 17 May 1859/d. 20 Feb. 1926) married William G Keyser,
  • Eliza Belle (b. 21 March 1861/d. 9 Dec. 1891) married Andrew Benjamin Angel, our 2nd cousin twice removed, on 9 Dec. 1880 (4),

  • Addie Lee (b. 23 June 1866/d. 5 Jan. 1930) married John Wesley Brown on 9 Dec. 1880 (5),

  • Minnie M. born in about 1868 married probably Mr. Andrew Keyser * (?) abt. 1885,
  • Lura P. (b. 16 March 1870/d. 5 March 1941) married Robert H Coleman on 20 Feb. 1890 (6),

  • Thomas Clemens (b. 29 Feb. 1876/d. 18 August 1952), a physician, married Emma L McKamey on 7 March 1906 (8).

Henry got ill and the family moved to Mason County with the hope that it would help the father of the family recover. However, it was his wife Sarah Elizabeth who left this world first, on 6 March 1878. After that, Henry came back to Plano. His health gradually deteriorated. He died of TB on 10 August 1878 in Plano.

Rippy, McCracken and Browning families

How is it that Jonathan Browning and his son John Moses, the famous gunsmiths, inventors and gun makers are also in our family tree?

First, there was William Gant (1764-1824), our great-great-great-great-grandfather. On 7 July 1704, he married Miss Frances Rippy (born 18 Oct. 1760), the daughter of Mathew Rippy and Frances Anne Holliday.

Frances' brother was Edward Rippey (b. 23 March 1764, Hillsborough, Orange, North Carolina) Edward married Miss Nancy McCracken on 17 November 1774. The marriage took place in Orange County. Nancy's parents were John McCracken and Abigail McMinn.

North Carolina Marriages:
Name: Edward Rippey
Spouse's Name: Nancy Mccracken

Event Date: 17 Nov 1790
Event Place: Orange, North Carolina

Record source:
"North Carolina Marriages, 1759-1979," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F8YT-3JS : 10 February 2018), Edward Rippey and Nancy Mccracken, 17 Nov 1790; citing Orange, North Carolina, reference ; FHL microfilm 6,330,317.

Nancy and Edward's daughter Abigail was born circa 1800 in Sumner County, Tennessee.

And here we get to the Browning family.

On 10 September 1823, Abigail married Mr. John M Browning, the son of Edmund Lloyd Browning and Sarah Barbara Allen.

Record source:
“Tennessee, County Marriages, 1790-1950,” database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKH3-GD2F : 22 December 2016), John Browning and Abigail Rippey, 10 Sep 1823; citing Sumner, Tennessee, United States, Marriage, p. , Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville and county clerk offices from various counties; FHL microfilm 969,844.

John M's brother was Jonathan Browning (1805-1879) who had 24 children (with three wives).

Jonathan Browning

One of his sons was John Moses Browning, the creator of several firearms.

There is also another link to the Brownings in that family tree branch. In 1774, William Gant's brother Zachariah was born in Orange County, North Carolina. When Zack was thirty years old, on 24 Nov. 1804, he married Miss Sarah Sally McCracken. Sarah was a sister of Nancy, the one who married Edward Rippey.

The family tree branches which connect us to the Brownings:

1. William Gant - our g-g-g-g-grandfather
his wife Frances Rippy
her brother Edward Rippey + his wife Nancy Rippy nee McCracken
their daughter Abigail Rippy
her husband John M Browning (born circa 1800, Brushy Fork, Davidson, Tennessee/d. 24 July 1860, Centerville, Appanoose, Iowa)
his brother Jonathan Browning (b. 22 Oct. 1805, Brushy Fork of Bledsoe Creek, Sumner, Tennessee/d. 21 June 1879, Ogden, Weber, Utah Territory)
his son John Moses Browning (b. 23 Jan. 1855/d. 26 Nov. 1926)

2. William Gant
his brother Zachariah Gant (b. 1774/d. Jan. 1858, Sharon Grove, Todd, Kentucky)
his wife Sarah Sally McCracken (b. circa 1780, North Carolina/d. 1850, Subdivision 53, Marshall, Tennessee)
her sister Nancy Rippy nee McCracken (b. 1765, Ireland/d. 1850, Sumner County, Tennessee)
her daughter Abigail Rippy (b. 1800, Sumner, Tennessee/d. 4 March 1834, Iowa City, Wright, Iowa)
her husband John M Browning
his brother Jonathan Browning
his son John Moses Browning

In my next post I am going to come back to Collin County, Texas.

Porter passed away ten years earlier on 15 July 1957 due to cerebral hemorrhage. Porter lived 68 years, one month and fifteen days.

Annie and Porter's home was at 310 Sallie Circle, Richardson, Texas then (12). Their house which was built only three years earlier still exists. I googled the address and found out that the house was for sale.

Both Porter and Annie were buried at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.

Rippy - Our Irish Ancestry

Today I introduce one of our direct Irish lines - the Rippy family.

Edward Lee Rippy - born in 1678 in Dublin, Ireland is our 7 times great-grandfather. His wife was Miss Nannie Ross also from Dublin. Edward died where he lived in 1732 and was buried at St. Nicholas Without parish cemetery in Dublin.

Edward and Nannie's son was Joseph Rippy born in 1708 in Dublin as well. About the year 1728, Joseph married Miss Ellen Patterson, daughter of Mr. John Patterson and Ms. Agnes Moffet. Ellen was born between 1706 and 1708 in Fingal County, Leinster, Ireland. Joseph passed in March 1774, Ellen in 1777. They were both buried in Dublin.

The couple had at least four children including Edward Ross (b. in June 1729 in Baile Átha Cliath, County Dublin, Ireland), Ellen, Mathew (b. 1740 in County Fingal), and John. Mathew is our 5 times great-grandfather.

As far as I know, Edward and Mathew emigrated to America. The brothers settled in North Carolina.
Mathew started his own family around 1757 when he married Miss Nancy Anne Holliday (born about 1738 in Orange County, Colony of North Carolina, British Colonial America). Nancy Anne's parents were Samuel and Elisabeth Holliday.

Mathew and Nancy got married and lived in Orange County. They had thirteen children.
Our direct ancestor Mathew died at the age of (about) 77 in Hillsboro District, Orange County, North Carolina.

What is the exact connection of the Rippy family and our family line?

Mathew and Nancy's oldest daughter Frances (b. 18 Oct. 1760, Orange County, NC), called by her immediate family "Fanny", is our 3X great-grandmother. About 1785, she married our ancestor William Gant (b. 14 August 1763, Granville County, North Carolina).

William's sister Keziah (b. 1764, Granville, NC) married Fanny's brother Thomas S Rippy (b. 13 Jan. 1764, Alamance, North Carolina).

There are a few more Irish family branches in our family tree and those ancestors cannot wait till they are mentioned on the pages of this blog. I will tell you about them some other time, though.
