Isabella of Angoulême, Queen Consort of England

Isabella of Angoulême is our maternal great-grandmother (29 generations back)*.
She is one of the very many interesting persons in our extended family tree. Isabella was born about 1188 in Angoulême, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France to Alice "Alix" of Courtenay and Aymer Taillefer, Count of Angoulême.

Alice's brother Peter II of Courtenay was Latin Emperor of Constantinople.

Isabella's great-grandparents were King Louis VI (The Fat) of France and his second wife Adelaide De Maurienne who was of the Savoy royal family.

Thanks to Isabella's marriage (24 August 1200) to King John I of England she connects us to Plantagenets. After the matrimony, Isabella became Queen Consort of England and Countess of Angoulême (1202). However, it is her second husband Hugh X of Lusignan, Count of La Marche, who is our direct maternal ancestor.

An interesting fact is that the second spouse was the son of Isabella's fiance, Hugh IX, whom she was engaged to before the marriage with King John.

Hugh X was born about 1185. Both Hugh IX and Hugh X were of the royal family of Lusignan.

Isabella and Hugh X's son William (born about 1225, Cistercian Abbey, Rhone-Alpes, Valence, Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France) is our direct family line. William was a half-brother of King Henry III who he supported as well as the king's son Prince Edward. William was also Edward I's uncle.

William de Valence married Joan de Munchesi, Lady of Swanscombe, a granddaughter of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke, a knight who served King Henry II, King Henry, Richard I, King John and Henry III. William Marshal was also an uncle of King Edward I of England.

William and Joan's daughter Joan married Sir John III Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, Lord of Lochaber, and Lord of Annandale (our direct ancestor 27 generations back). He was the one who was stabbed to death by Robert the Bruce. Sir John's maternal ancestry line leads us to another noble lady - I wrote about it here.

William de Valence died in 1296 in Bayonne, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. He was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. His wife Joan lived thirteen years longer. She passed on 20 Sept. 1307 in Valence, Charente, France.

My Haind-Painted Tops and T-Shirts

I have not shown you these shirts and tops, yet. They are the results of the hand-painting on the fabrics which is my hobby.

I have painted all the plain T-shirts which I have got so I gladly welcomed the four summer tops which I received from my mom. More space to paint on!

I really like the traditional Pomeranian/ Kashubian folk patterns, they are the ones which I use in my painting most often. However, the pink top has a different kind of folk shapes.

The t-shirts which I painted as a gift for my mom. Various colors of the background make the pattern look different. The white and yellow material emphasizes the tones of all the shapes and flowers the most.

Some people - when they see my T-shirts - tend to think it is just a print. Some assume they were embroidered and are rather surprised to hear it is all hand-painted, and need to touch the pattern to believe it.

Clint S Haggard and Kate Lunsford

According to "A History of Collin County, Texas", the Haggard family is of Danish ancestry, from Denmark they moved to England. I have found the information regarding the Haggards' English heritage at geni.com.

The one who moved the family line from England to Virginia was Lord James D Haggard, born on 29 August 1687 in  Bradenham Hall, Bradenham, England. He was the son of a rich English nobleman, Lord Anthony Haggard.

James did not wish to follow the career plans his father had for him and as a result of that, young Lord J D Haggard arrived in Norfolk, Virginia around 1698. He married Miss Elizabeth Lucy Gentry and became a tobacco planter. 

James' son Nathaniel Haggard (Rev.) moved the family to Clark County, Kentucky in 1788.  Reverand's grandson was John W Haggard Jr. (born 17 March 1794 in Winchester, Clark, Kentucky).

When John was 17, he married Miss Mourning Quisenberry. She was the daughter of  James and Jane Quisenberry.

After Mourning's death in 1846, John and his son Clinton Shepard (born on 12 November 1838 in Winchester, Clark, Kentucky) came to Texas. They settled west of Plano

John and his son grew horses, cattle and mules and soon became vital members of the Plano community. They also supported education. Together with other local families they started the Haggard school which was later transformed in Add Run College. The College became Texas Christian University.

John died  on 11 December 1858.

About a year later, at the age of 21, Clinton married Miss Nancy Catherine Lunsford, the daughter of William Lunceford and Catherine Potoff Schrader. Nancy was also a sister of Fred Lunsford's father Simon Peter.

Clint grew oats and wheat, he also breaded mules.
He, his wife and children lived not far from Plano, in Precinct #5. The Census of 1870 informs that Clinton was a stock raiser, and the Haggard's family's real estate was worth $8.000 and their personal estate was $10.000. (2)

Sadly, about a month later, on 6 October 1921, Mrs. Nancy Catherine Haggard passed away. In the newspaper obituary included below, we can read that the reason of her death was paralysis. I guess, she had had a stroke.

Nancy Catherine Haggard was buried at Bethany Cemetery.

The funeral service was attended by friends and relatives of Clint and Nancy's. It was a very solemn event, which also celebrated the life of Nancy Catherine and Clinton Shepard Haggard as a married couple. Both of them supported the local church, education and the local community in general.

Mary Elizabeth Gant Clark

When I first read about Mary E Clark who gave 40 acres of land for the future Gainesville to be built, I thought it might have been our 3rd cousin 4 times removed Mary Elizabeth. Well, when I looked closer at it, I can see it could not be her - the dates do not match. The land was donated in 1850 and our Mary was born on 4 June 1861. Both ladies lived in Texas, though.

Mary Elizabeth Gant came to this world in Waynesboro, Wayne County, Tennessee, in the family of Absalom Bobo Gant and Nancy E Martin. She was their first child.

Nine years later, there were four more children in the Gant family. The records says, that their real estate was worth $600 and the value of their personal estate was #400.

Mary Elizabeth, her parents and siblings moved to Hill Country, Texas by 1880. The Census from 1880 shows that at the time when the records were made,  they had already lived there. Absalom Bobo was a farmer, his wife was a homemaker and looked after their seven children.

Mary's husband, John Prichard Clark was four years older than her. He was born on 26 July 1857 in Salem, Massachusetts to John S (born in 1823 in Michigan). Clark and Priscilla Pauline Pritchard (born in 1824 in Bristol, England). John's birth certificate tells that his father was a mariner.

Later, they moved to America, and from Massachusetts to Texas. Both John S Clark and his wife Priscilla Pauline died in Cego, Falls County, Texas.

According to my finds, Mary and John P. had three children - Martha Priscilla (born 26 March 1882), Sam B.( born on 10 Jan. 1885), and Nannie B. (b. 28 August 1888/d. 26 Sept. 1888).

Sadly, cousin Mary Elizabrth Clark died not long after her youngest daughter on 7 Oct. 1888. She was only 27. Mary's body was buried at Van Alstyne Cemetery in Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas.

After her death, their children Sam and Martha lived with Mary's parents Absalom Bobo and Nancy. John Prichard remarried in 1890 (1).

The couple lived in Hill Country (2). They had two children a daughter Addie D (b. 1914) and son Sam C (b. 1918) (3).

Martha lived 78 years. She passed on 7 August 1960 in Hillsboro Hospital due to congestive heart failure. She was buried at Peoria Cemetery in Hill County, TX (4).

Sam B. Clark, the younger child of Mary Elizabeth and John Prichard, married in 1905. His wife Annie Nivin (Sarah Ann Nevins) was born on 15 Sept. 1885 to Silas D. and Nancy Ann Nivins. The marriage took place in Huron, TX (5) (6).

I did not find any information about Sam and Annie's children.

Sam lived 78 years as well. He died in Whitney Hospital, Hill County, TX, in the city where he had lived for years. The cause of his death was pneumonia and a cerebral vascular accident. Sam found his final resting place at Hillcrest Garden of Memory Cemetery in Hillsboro, Hill County, TX (6).

George Gordon Byron

Some time ago, we watched a documentary about Lord Byron. In that program, he was called a Celebrity and playboy of his times. According to the show, Byron, besides being occupied with writing, was mostly focused on taking care of his physical appearance and on his excessive and extravagant sexual activities. Fred Purney Lunsford

Fred Lunsford belonged to the social circle of our aunts: Lula, Victoria, and Viola.
He was also a brother-in-law of our 1st cousin once removed Ethel Howard Richards.

Frederick Purney Lunsford was born on 31 July 1888 in Collin County, Texas. His parents were Simon Peter Lunsford and Mary Etta Haggard. The couple married on 24 October 1867 in Collin County, Texas.

According to the 1900 Census records, Fred was one of the couple's 15 children. Only 11 children, including Fred, survived till adulthood. The family lived in Plano, TX.

When Fred grew up, he worked as a farmer. Frederick's father died in 1914. Since then, Fred supported his mother financially.

The WW1 draft record also tells us that Fred had blue eyes and brown hair. He was medium height and was medium built.

Fredrick Pumia Lunsford (it seems the person who digitilized the record misspelled the middle name, I would it reads Purnia not Pumia).

The above draft record informs that it happened on June 5, 1719. Somebody made an error. It was June 5, 1917.

About four months later, on 30 October 1917, Fred married Miss Ethel Mae Richards, the daughter of Mr. Alonzo Woolfield Richards and Miss Theodocia Ellen Liggett. On the day of the wedding, Fred was 29, his bride was nine years younger. She was born on 18 August 1897 in Allen, Collin County, Texas.

Unfortunately, Fred and Ethel's life together did not last long. Shortly after that census, three years after the wedding, they lived in Plano. Sadly, Ethel got sick with influenza which soon turned into pneumonia. She died at the age of 23, after a week of sickness on 15 February 1920 in St. Paul's Sanatorium in Dallas (1).

Ethel was buried at the Allen Cemetery.

I found more about the circumstances of her death when I was searching the information regarding Fred's siblings. See below, at the end of this post.

Fred and Ethel did not have any children. I do not know whether he remarried later. Probably not. In the WW2 draft record, he did not give any wife's name. The person who would always know his address was Mrs. W A Johnson who lived at Route #7, Dallas, Texas. At that time Fred's place of residence was 1603 Pocahontas Street in Dallas as well. Mrs. W. A. Johnson was his sister Sarah Jane born in 1885. Sarah married William Albert Johnson on 12 August 1902 in Grayson County, Texas (2).

According to the Census of 1920, Sarah Jane (3) and her husband had seven children -  a son Clarence Minor, born on 10 November 1904 in Plano, Dallas, TX (4), Wilma P., b. 1907, Carl L, b. 1910, Annie B., b. 1912, James G., b. 1914, Emma Jewel, born on 30 Sept. 1916 in Carrollton, Dallas, Texas (5), and a son Tom W., born in 1920. Fred and Sarah's mother Mary Etta lived with Sarah's family after the death of their father and Mary Etta's husband Peter Simon Lunsford.

He passed at the age of 91. His body was buried at the cemetery in Allen.

As for Fred's siblings, I also found some info about:

1. His brother Simon Gibson Lunsford. He was born on 30 Sept. 1873 in Texas, died on 10 January 1953 in Snyder, Surry, Texas (6). His wife was Cyntha and they lived in Denton

2. His sister Lida Lee Lunsford Watterson was born on 25 Jan. 1890 in Collin, Texas. She lived at 2709 Lucas Dr. in Dallas. Lida died at the age of 70 on 11 Nov. 1940 in Dallas (7).

3. His brother Walter Clyde Lunsford was born on 14 Oct. 1891 in Collin, TX. He died from pneumonia when he was 28, on 7 Feb. 1920. Walter was buried on the same day (8).

According to the record included in the death certificate of Fred's wife Ethel, she got sick on 7 Feb. 1920 and died a week later. She might have caught a cold during Walter's funeral ceremony.

Apparently, also Fred's brother's wife died a week before Walter. Three deaths in the family, three weeks in a row. Very tragic.

4. His brother John William Lunsford was born in 1868 in Texas. He died in Colfax, New Mexico on 5 August 1933. John's wife was Anna Berry Lunsford (9).

5. His brother Clint Haggard, born on 5 Dec. 1880, lived 86 years. His place of residence was RD #2, Aubrey in Denton, Texas. Clint died in Denton Osteopathic Hospital on 28 April 1967 (10). His wife's name was Hattie.

6. His sister Mattie Sue was born on 31 Dec. 1878. She married P H Vince on 10 Sept. 1924 (11).
 Mattie died in Fowler Home in Dallas on her 85th birthday, 31 Dec. 1963 (12).

7. His brother Robbert, born in 1874 in Texas (13).

8. His brother James, born in 1877 in Texas (13).
