👉 It seems by the end of 1660, Napoleon’s wife had been registered as the owner of their property as it was her name only that appeared in the County taxes records. Perhaps, Napoleon’s health deteriorated (?). Anyhow, by then, the number of their cattle had risen to 75 heads. They also had 5 horses (14).

Napoleon Bonaparte (Pole) Breeding passed on 22 January 1861 (15).

Buford J Ellison

Today's "They Live in Texas" entry is also our WWII August memorial post.

🎕

Beauford Jefferson Ellison was born on 10 August 1922, in Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas  His parents were  James Thomas Ellison and Vada Zelma Knight (1, 2).

Later, the original spelling of the boy’s name was changed to Buford.

In 1930, little Buford lived with his siblings and parents in Precinct #1, Wichita, TX. The siblings were Thomas  Jefferson (age 14) and Helen Alene (age 4). Mr. James Buford was a laborer at a stock ranch (3).

Seven years later, Buford’s brother, Marvin Burnell was born.

From the records - it seems that , when he left school, Buford most likely did various jobs. In 1940 census, there is a record of Jefferson B. Ellison who lived in Hartley, Texas, in the house of J. B. Bagwell. Jefferson B. worked as a waiter in a café owned by Mr. Bagwell (4).

27 June 1942 – Buford lived at 600 N. Grant, in Odessa, Ector, TX. He was unemployed. On that day, he was drafted (WWII time). The young man was 5 feet 6 tall, weighted 130 lbs., had blonde hair, and  brown eyes. His complexion was described in the draft paper as ”ruddy”. Buford’s mom lived in Hawley then (5).

Buford J Ellison was enrolled into the Air Force where he became a B-24 J engineer. He served with 866th Bomber Squadron, 494th Bomb Group and was part of the “Lonesome Lady”  bomber crew.

On 28 July 1945, they flew on a mission to the Japan area. The plane crashed on a tree near Hiroshima. All the crew members (besides one) survived. They were soon arrested and taken to the local police station. A few days later, on 6 August, Buford perished  - killed by the A bomb blast.

His fate was unknown for a long time.

🎕

Sergeant Buford J. Ellison was awarded

World War II Victory Medal,

Purple Heart,

American Campaign Medal,

 Army Presidential Unit Citation,

Army Good Conduct Medal,  and Prisoner of War Medal.

We learned about Mr. Buford and other American POW who were imprisoned in Hiroshima in August 1945, at the documentary ("Paper Lanterns") screening event at the local Museum of the Pacific War.

Book by Mr. Mori - the documentary is based on.

James J Harper

In the book I have studied*, among many men, James J Harper is mentioned.

James was a resident of Polk County, TX. He enlisted into the CA on 14 May 1862. The man was a Private (1), he served with Company F, the 22nd Regiment Texas Infantry (Hubbard’s Regiment). In November 1862, he was reported sick at Camp Nelson in Arkansas. James did not recover. He passed on 17th November of the same year and was buried at Camp Nelson Cemetery in Cabot, Arkansas.

The note mentions James’ wife Susannah who received $80.42 from the CA Treasure Department after the man’s passing. It was the soldier’s earnings.

According to James’ military record, he was born in 1833 (2). I tried to find out more about James J. Harper and his family. Here are the results of my research.

I did not know where James was born so I looked for him in various states. It appeared the name James Harper was quite common as I found quite a few men by that name, who were born in 1833 in Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama, among others..

However, 3 things needed to add up: James’ estimated year of birth, the name of his wife, and the place of residence in 1862 – Polk County, TX.

The only more clear record was the birth of Nancy Ann E Harper, the daughter of James J Harper and Susanna O’Neal. Nancy was born on 12 August 1862, in Polk County, TX (3, 4).

It led me to James J Harper born in Alabama.

He was the son of Benjamin Hale Harper and Nancy Jane Standley. James’ mother died early and his father remarried. In 1850, the family of Mr. Benjamin Harper, a farmer, lived in Henry, Alabama (5). The family was – wife Elizabeth (age 38, born in NC), Sarah Jane (age 18), James (age 15) + children from the second marriage Benjamin Hale (age 13), Wilson (age 11), Malinda (age 9), Eliza (age 7), Washington (age 7), Joseph (age 3), and William (age 2).

James started his own family in 1859, on 21 March. He married 18-year-old Miss Susannah O’Neal (6), who was born on 19 April 1840, in South Carolina and was the daughter of James Henry O’Neal and Sarah Jane Hill.

As you can see, the record mentions James S Harper - not James J (?)

James and Susannah’s marriage took place in Henry County, Alabama.  Susanna was the bride’s middle name. Her first name was Charlotte.

Sometime after the marriage, the couple came to Texas. I tried to find him in the 1860 records. However, he might have come to Texas later, possibly in 1861.

James never saw his daughter Nancy, who was born a few months after he was enrolled in the CA.

Phillip R Goodbread & Family

Phillip R Goodbread was the son of John Goodbread and Mary Ledbetter. The latter is our direct ancestor, 5 X great-grandmother. Mary's first husband was John Bradley (our direct line) who died on 24 June 1778 in North Carolina. 36-year-old Mary was left with 4 sons below 10 years of age (Johnson, James, Isaac, and Edward), 1 girl, Polly, age 13, 3 sons age about 15/16 (George Walton, John, and Thomas) and another son, John Jr..

On 23 April 1779, Mary Ledbetter Bradley married Mr. John Goodbread (1) in Rutherford Township, Rutherford, North Carolina. The second spouse was about 11 years junior to Mary. He was born in about 1753 in Orange, NC, to Mr. Philippus Gutbrodt and his wife Mary Catherine Braun.

John and Mary's children were born:
Sarah - in abt 1780
Catherine Wharton - 1780
John Jr. - 1781
Thomas - 1782
🏠 The family lived in Rutheford, NC (2,3).

Phillip R Goodbread, born in about 1786,  was the youngest child of John and Mary's.

On 19 December 1812 (4, 4.1), Phillip married Nancy Webb, his second wife, in Burke, NC.

marriage license

Phillip R. had a son by the name of Joseph, who was born in about 1809 by Phillip's first wife (whose name is unknown). Later, Phillip and Nancy's children came to this world:
  • Thomas - 1813
  • Minerva Eliza - born in abt. 1815
  • John - born in abt. 1818,
  • Nancy Mathilda - 1820
  • Sarah - 1821.
Nancy Webb Goodbread, Phillip's wife, died in 1823.

Phillip and children had moved to Alabama by 30 March 1830. On that day, Phillip's daughter Mary Louisa was born in Marengo, Alabama. Her mother was Mary (Polly) Hanson.

4 July 1830, Phillip married Polly (5). I do not know why the lady's surname mentioned in the marriage record is given as Goodbread. An error, or perhaps, she had been married to another Goodbread man before?

26 January 1831 - Minerva Elisabeth, age about 16,  married Mr. Daniel Bird in Marengo, Alabama (6). Daniel was the son of Mr. Abraham Bird and Ms.  Sarah Gaines. He was about 6 years older than Miverva, and was born on 23 January 1809 in Telfair, Laurens County, Georgia.

marriage bond - Daniel Bird

marriage record - Minerva and Daniel

27-year-old Thomas married Malinda Brewer on 27 May 1833 (7). Malinda was born in Marengo, Alabama, in abt 1810, to Matthew H Brerwer and Mary Hammond.

👉 Phillip, Polly and their child came to Texas in 1834. According to the records, at first, they most likely settled in Gonzales County.

His elder children came to Texas in later years.

Nancy Mathilda was married in abt 1840 to Creed Taylor (born 10 April 1820 in Giles Town, Shelby, Tennessee), the son of Josiah Taylor and  Hephzibeth Luker.

Sarah was married in abt 1838, in NC to Martin C West, born in 1814, in Walton, Georgia.

Joseph, the eldest son of Phillip's, married Susan Johanna E Todd (born in abt 1822 in Georgia). She was the daughter of William Henry Todd, Sr. and Martha "Patsey" Holder. Joseph met his tragic end in abt. 1840 in Shelby County, TX when he was shot to death in broad daylight. At the moment of his death, Joseph was unarmed. I will come back to it in another post as his death ignited a lethal conflict due to which other family members suffered as well.

👉 1840 - Phillip R Goodbread was listed among the land owners who did not pay taxes  to the Republic of Texas for the land in Gonzales County (8).

👉 Minerva Elizabeth had came with her family to Wilson County, TX by 25 Dec 1842. On that day, she gave birth to her son George Washington Bird.

👉 18 Nov 1845 the land patent of the land piece in Montgomery, originally granted to Phillip, was in the General Land Office "ready for delivery". It was announced in the Texas national Register from November until December (**) Did Phillip Goodbread collect the grant? I am not sure about what had occured as there are no records regarding his stay/taxes collected in Montgomery county. On the other hand, (among others) Phillip Goodbread was mentioned in the tax records in Grimes county.

👉 1846 - Phillip rendered 4428 acres in Grimes County. The land was worth $2, 214 (9).

👉 1847 - He still had 4428 acres of land in Grimes County, Texas (10).

👉 - Phillip Goodbread paid taxes in Addison, Dallas, TX, for 2 horses and 140 head of cattle. (11)

👉 1848 - Grimes County, TX  - Phillip had 4428 acres worth $2214 (12).

In the same year, John Goodbread, Phillip's son died. I do not know any details regarding John's departure.

Jesse Bobo Gant & Family

Jesse Bobo Gant, our 3rd cousin 4 times removed, has already been mentioned here, when I talked about his father and other Bobos of the family.
Today, more about Jesse Bobo's immediate family.

👉 Jesse came to this world on 6 February 1866, in Waynesboro, Wayne, TN. His parents were Mr. Absolom Bobo Gant and Nancy E Martin. The family was registered on 23 June 1870 (1) in Civil District #7, Wayne, TN (post office Waynesboro). Absolom B. Gant (age 31) was a farmer. His wife Nancy (age 32) was keeping house. Their children were: Mary Elizabeth (age 9), Jesse Bobo (age 4), and Samantha A (age 3). There is also Ann Gant (age 14) mentioned in the record, who was a "domestic servant". Ann was most likely not Jesse's sibling, as his parents married in 1860 (2). I have not established their exact relationship, though. The family real estate was worth #600. The estimated value of their personal estate was given as $400.

Not long after the census, on 1 September 1870, Jesse's sister Nancy Emma was born in Wayne, TN. Another one, Sarah Clementine, arrived in January 1873. Then, on 13 April 1876, his sister Eliza Perry came to this world.

👉 The family had come to Hill County, Texas by 26 May 1879, when the youngest daughter of Absolom and Nancy Gant was born. They named the girl Tennie.

🏡 Census 30 June 1880 - Jesse lived with his parents and sisters in Precinct #1, Hill County, Texas. Absolom Bobo's (the father's) given in the record was 43, Nancy (the mother) was also 43. Both Jesse and his sister Samantha attended school then (3).

29 May 1881 - the family celebrated Mary Elizabeth's wedding, who married John Pritchard Clark (4). John was born on 26 July 1857, in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. He was the son of Capt. John S Clark and Priscilla Pauline Pritchard.
