Red Outfit

The red outfit is presented at the Czech Heritage and Culture Center in La Grange, Texas. Next to it, there is a note which tells that 11-year-old Adolfina Bravenec was wearing it when she came to Texas. I wanted to learn more about that girl. That is why I did the research - its results are presented below. As you can see in the photo included below, the note contains an error. The first name of Slečna (Miss) Bravenec was Adolfina, not Apolfina.

Adolfina was born on 15 May 1893 to Jiři (b. 1864) and Maria Drabek (b. 1858) Bravenec (1, 2). Jiři Bravenec was a tailor. Later, more kids were born to Jiri and Maria.
In 1906, the family left their home in Lutonin (3), Moravia, and emigrated to Texas where Jiři's brother Jan, who came to Texas 3 years earlier, had already established his home in Seaton, Texas.
I have found a village Lutonina on the map of the Czech Republic. It is situated in the Zlin region.

Map data Ⓒ2022 GeoBasis-DE BKG (Ⓒ2009), Google United States

The map shows the distance between Lutonina (on the right) and Prague (about 3 hours by car).

The emigration records inform that Jiri's family arrived at Galveston on 14 May 1906. They had traveled on the ship SS Wittekind.
The Bravenec family recorded by an immigration officer were:

Jiři Bravenec, age 41,
Maria Bravenec, age 46,
Adolfina Bravenec, age 11
Franz Bravenec, age 8,
Josef Bravenec, age 4
Frantiska Bravenec, age 3.

The father of the family brought $250 to Texas (4,5,6,7,8, 9, 10). They were going to Seaton, Bell County, where Jiři's brother Jan lived.

Other members of the Bravenec family who came to Texas from the village of Zadveřice, Moravia in 1903 were:

  • Jan Bravenec, age 10, left Bremen on 13 December 1902 and traveled on the ship Frankfurt. Whether he was accompanied by friends or family of a different surname, I do not know. The ship reached Galveston on 7 January 1903. The boy was hosted by a friend who lived in Austin County, Texas (11).
  • His parents and sister joined him a few months later. It was Adolfina's uncle Jan (age 37), farmer of Zadveřice, his wife Anna (age 40), and their 8-year-old daughter Anna. The three departed Bremen on 19 September 1903 on the vessel SS Breslau and got to Galveston on 8 October of the same year. The family was going to stay in Nelsonville, Bell County, at the home of Anna Bravenec's cousin Mr. Joe Sebesta (12,13,14,15).

Note: The village of Zadveřice is not far from Lutonina (where Adolfina and her family lived), about 9 minutes by car.

The 1910 Census found Adolfina, her parents, and her siblings in Bell county. Her father Jiři, a farmer, had become. The names of all the family members had been anglicized as well (16).

Four years later, on 7 November 1914, 21-year-old Adolfina married a three year older Mr. Frank Mikeska (17), son of Joseph. The Mikeška family  also came from the village of Zadveřice, mentioned above.

Soon, on 12 November 1916, a son, Frank Joseph, was born to the couple (18).

The 1920 Census found the family in Justice Precinct #5, Bell County, TX (19). Soon after the census, a daughter, Vlasta Adele, was born to Adolfina and Frank on 17 August 1921 (20).

1925 - a wedding in the family - Adolfina's brother Frank married Miss Fannie Rose Odstričil.
1927 - the funeral of Adolfina's aunt Anna Bravenec. The lady died on 28 October of that year (21).
1929 - Adolfina's youngest sibling Frances married Mr. Rudolph Louis Lastovica.

The years were passing by. Frank and Adolfina paid off their house. Frank farmed. When Frank Joe grew old enough to help his father, he worked on the family farm as well (22).

Events merry in nature, such as weddings, wedding anniversaries, and birthdays were intervened with deaths that happened from time to time. As for the latter ones, I only researched three family surnames  Bravenec, Sebesta (Šebesta), and Mikeska in that matter. Life still seemed to be balanced regarding the number of happy and sad events. Children were being born into the family, some relatives passed.

The death record from the years 1930-1934 is given for comparison, to indicate the difference between the number of deaths (including the premature ones caused by accidents and other tragic circumstances) during that period and the later year 1935-1939.

The death of two close relatives in the same year - mother and brother - must have been to Adolphina a heart breaking blow. And there was no rest from the pain, no relief. The Grim Reaper was not leaving the family and not giving Adolfina a break in her suffering.

During all those years, as in every family, there were also joyful celebrations and healthy babies being born. However, the great number of deaths must have darkened and obscured the happy occasions. Obviously, Adolfina did not attend all those funerals, but the news about the departed relations certainly reached her.

Considering the fact that I researched three surnames only, most likely, there were even more deaths in the family. How much the lady suffered only she knew. The death of two closest relatives - mother and brother in the same year. Death was coming again and again. So much pain. Again and again. It could break anybody, especially a more sensitive person. All those deaths - including the passing of her mother Marie and brother Joe, in the same year 1935.

21 January 1940 was the last day of Adolfina's life. She died in the Scott & White hospital in Temple at 2 PM (129). On the day of her death, Adolfina was 48 years, 8 months, and 6 days. She had lived in Texas for 35 years.
