Another person who inspired cousin Pope's parents could be Gustavus Adolphus Henry Sr., a lawyer and a politician who represented Christian County in Kentucky legislature from 1831 to 1833. The man moved to Tennessee where the family our cousin Gustavus lived and where the boy was born on 17 Jan. 1834 (Williamson, Maury County). However, G A Henry Sr. became a Tennessee representative (and probably more popular as well) much later - in 1862.
Studying the Pope ancestry, I realized that our 3rd cousin 4 times removed was more likely named after one of his ancestors - maybe it was Gustavus Adolphus Pope I (b. 12 Dec. 1812/d. 13 January 1834 - a few days before our cousin's birth). G A Pope I was a son of John Pope III, grandfather of our Gustavus Adolphus Pope.
Anyway, Gustavus Adolphus Pope's father was Mr. William Rouse Pope (son of John Pope III), his mother was Jane Lesey Gant.
In 1850, the Census recorded Gus who lived then at the house of his uncle John Isham Gant. Studying that record we can assume that the uncle provided schooling environment for his children and some young male relatives including Gus. One of the dwellers of John's household was a teacher.
In May 1961, cousin Gustavus was enlisted in Company A of Tennessee Confederate Cavalry, 9th Battalion. He was a quartermaster and he was captured at Fort Donelson on 16 Feb. 1862. After that, Gus was a prisoner of Camp Douglas in Chicago.
Not long ago we watched a documentary which told the little known history of the Chicago camp. Our cousin was kept there for 7 months.
Gus belonged to the lucky ones who were exchanged in September 1862 for the Union soldiers at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Lucky, because although the living conditions in the camp were not good even at its beginnings, later the situation severely deteriorated.
After the exchange, Gustavus Adolphus Pope was sent to Port Hudson, Louisiana and promoted to cavalry captain. Later, he served in Dalton, Georgia, and in the Carolinas under Gen. Wheeler. When the Confederate Army surrendered in May 1865 (Charlotte, North Carolina), Gus came back home to Tennessee.
I found the record of Gus Pope marriage to Miss Lucy Fitzgerald, which took place in Maury, Tennessee on 12 May 1871 (1).
Was it our Gustavus? Probably.
The second marriage was on 4 Nov. 1875 in Giles, Tennessee. Gus' spouse was Miss Myra Belle Carter (b. in May 1853/d. 1926, Pulaski, Giles, County, Tennessee).
In 1900, Gustavus, his wife and three children lived in Pulaski town, Giles, TN. Gus was a pharmacist and owned a drugstore.

Cartes Pope mentioned above was Frank Carter Pope, the second son of Gus and Myra's. He was born on 27 April 1878 in Pulaski. Frank became a lawyer (4). He married Miss Eva Moore on 18 Oct. 1806 (5).
Myra Lesey (b. 19 June 1855/d. April 1960, Del Rio, Val Verde, Texas) married Louis Martin Cartall on Tuesday 11 Nov. 1913 at 3 PM at the Pope family home in Pulaski (6,7).

Gus A Pope lived in Pulaski till the day of his death which came to him in 1923. Gustavus got ill in April of that year. The doctor visited him at the family home at Sam Davis Ave. in Pulaski on 30 April. It was Pyelitis, probably caused by kidney infection. Gus conditioned worsened and led to heart problems. Gustavus Adolphus Pope passed on 4 May. Tachycardia and Pyelitis with pus formation in pelvis was stated in his death certificate (12). It seems dear Gus died due to severe kidney infection which led to a septic shock. He was buried at Maplewood Cemetery.
