Mysterious Mr. Shrader

As the family story says, our grandmother named one of her sons Shrader because it was the surname of her favorite teacher.

Some time ago, I researched a possible family connection with any Shraders and came across Wilhelm Shrader (born about 1724) who sailed to America with his parents but arrived at the New World alone. More about him in the post HERE.

Although that was all very interesting, Wilhelm Shrader was a rather distant and indirect ancestor. Maybe too distant to influence our grandmother's choice regarding naming her son.

See yourself

Wilhelm Shrader
his son Heinrich Jacob Schrader (b. 5 July 1750, Rimbeck, Halberstadt, Saxony, Germany/d. 1 Feb. 1829, Jefferson, Kentucky) + wife Anna Maria (b. about 1740, Jefferson, Kentucky)

his son Jacob Shreader (17 August 1771, Westmoreland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/d. 11 Sept. 1837, Oldham, Kentucky) + wife Eva Elizabeth (b. 26 April 1774, Bethel Township, Berks, Pennsylvania/d. August 1860, Oldham, Kentucky). They married on 27 August 1793.

Bethel Township, view from near Pleasant Grove Rd.

his son Elijah Shrader (b. about 1817, Oldham, Kentucky/d. 15 July 1845, Edgar County, Illinois)

his wife Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Shrader (b. about 1816, Madison Co., Virginia/d. 5 Oct 1849, Edgar County, Illinois)

Elijah and Sarah Ann married on 9 June 1834 in Oldham, Kentucky (1).

her sister Eliza Ann (Carpenter) Brown (b. 24 Sept. 1808, Madison, Virginia/d. 1 Nov. 1849, Oldham, Kentucky) married Mr. John Brown (b. 18 April 1811/d. 4 June 1841) on 20 April 1829 in Oldham, Kentucky (2).

her son John Liter Brown (b. March 1838 in Floydsburg, Oldham, KY) - a farmer and carpenter.

John relocated from Kentucky to Texas where he married (3) Miss Mary Susannah Lunsford (b. 17 May 1841, Kentucky/d. 9 August 1917, Allen, Collin, TX). She was the daughter of William Lunceford and Catherine Pottof Schrader, and a great-granddaughter of Wilhelm Shrader, the emigrant, mentioned above.

In 1880 John, his wife Mary Susannah, and their seven children lived in Precinct 5, Collin County, Texas. John was a farmer and he hired 11 men who also lived in the household (4). One of the workers was John's distant relative Albert Ross Wetsel.

John passed on 14 April 1913 in Collin County, Texas.

John and Mary's daughter Eliza Catherine (Brown) Angle (b. 5 May 1869, Collin, TX/d. 27 July 1964, Allen, Collin, TX).

Train Water Station, Allen, Texas

her husband James Lafayette Angle (b. 25 Feb. 1863, Tennessee/d. 27 June 1949, Allen, Collin, TX), son of Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.

James and Eliza Catherine married on 23 July 1890 and they had 8 children, two of whom died young.

The Census of 1940 recorded that Jim L Angle, his wife, son James L. Jr, Willie M (daughter-in-law) + a niece and nephew lived in Justice Precinct 6 (McKinney), Collin, Texas (5). The record contains a mistake. The children described as a nephew (Robert Doyle) and niece (Betty Sue) were actually James L Sr.'s grandchildren (6). Their parents were James Lafayette Jr. and Willa Mae (nee Starnes).

his younger sister Dora Elizabeth (Angel) Brown (b. 1 May 1868, Tennessee/d. 29 Dec. 1961, Plano, Collin, TX)

On 17 June 1880, Dora, her parents and siblings (Isabelle, James L., Albert Abner, Durrett Monroe, Nancy Neal, Charles Thomas, and John Walter lived at a farm in Justice Precinct 5, Collin, Texas (7).

her husband Robert Lee Howard - our great-uncle

his sister/our grandmother Rachel

I continued my research, looking for a Shrader family who lived in Texas, in the same area and at the same time where and when our grandma lived.

Well, I did find the Shraders in Texas.

George Hammond Shrader, a farmer, (b. on 11 Sept. 1825 in Warren County, Tennessee) and his wife Mary Inez Gibbs (b. 10 Nov. 1827, Warren, Tennessee) came to Collin County in Texas with their 12 children around 1871/1872.

In 1870 they all still lived in Civil District No. 9 in Coffee County, Tennessee (8). The twelfth child of George and Mary's was born on 26 Jan 1871 in Carroll County, Arkansas. Probably when the family was on their way to Texas. The supposition supports the fact that their last and thirteenth child was born in August 1874 in Frisco, Collin County, TX.

Anyway, the next Census which took place in 1880 recorded the Shrader family who dwelled in 6th Precinct of Collin County, TX.

George Hammond was a Civil War veteran. He served as Sergeant in 34th Regiment of 4th Tennessee Confederate Infantry (Capt. J. F. Ross' Company, Churchwell's Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers).
Af all his children only one had anything to do with teaching. It was George's third son and fourth child Houston Petway Shrader born 24 March 1855 in Coffee County, Tennessee.

Houston became a methodist preacher. He was a contemporary of our grandma Rachel. Actually, she was 11 years younger than him. They both lived in Collin County, Texas so, all in all, very likely it was Houston Petway Shrader who inspired grandma so much that she decided to name one of her sons after that Bible teacher.

Methodist Episcopal Curch in Fredericksburg, Texas

On 10 June 1886, 31-year-old Houston married Miss Ruby Ann Emeline Edgar (b. 5 July 1861 in Newton, TX).

Mr. Shrader was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South from 1885 to 1910. He also worked in the Euless Methodist Church (1893/1894). In 1912, during his retirement, he served as a supply pastor in the Electra Circuit.

What makes it all even more interesting, is the fact that Houston Petway and our grandma Rachel were related due to the marriage of Houston's youngest brother (the one born in Texas) Daniel Booker Shrader. The latter one married Miss Ada R Rogers on 27 Nov. 1897 in Collin, TX (9).

Ada's brother Addison Pierce Rogers was married to Rachel's brother William Monroe Howard's son-in-law's sister.

Here is the family line

Houston Petway Shrader
his brother Daniel Booker Shrader (b. 4 August 1874, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 1 Oct. 1937, Collin, TX) was the first postmaster of Frisco

his wife Ada R Rogers (b. 14 Feb. 1876, Rockhill, Collin, TX/d. 20 May 1909, Collin, TX) was the daughter of Beverly Leonidas Rogers and Elizabeth Rhoda Ware. She was the first wife of Daniel's. They married on 27 Nov. 1897 (10).

In 1900, the couple lived with their first child, one-year-old son Harold Pearson and Daniel's mother Mary Inez in Justice Precinct 6 (north half), Collin, TX (11). Ada died at birth of her fifth child, a girl who was stillborn.

her brother Addison Pierce Rogers (b. 29 Jan. 1879, Frisco, Collin, TX/d. 22 June 1961, Frisco, Collin, TX), farmer

his wife Maude Lillian (Miller) Rogers (b. 1881 /d. Nov. 1953, Collin, TX), daughter of  Rev. Samuel William Miller and Martha Elizabeth Moore

Addison and Maude married on 15 Jan. 1902 in Collin, TX (12).

Possibly they had 4 children. At least that was what I found in the records.

her brother William Bryant Miller (b. 29 Nov. 1883, Tupelo, Mississippi/d. 5 Dec. 1971, McKinney, Collin, TX) was a salesman. The WW1 draft registration tells that William was tall, had blue eays and light hair (13).

his wife Geneva Clementine (Howard) Miller (b. 1 April 1889, Allen, Collin, TX/d. 10 June 1968, McKinney, Collin, TX)

William and Geneva's house was at 539 North Curch St., McKinney, TX (13).

his sister Rachel Clementine Howard - our grandmother

And how is Houston Petway Shrader related to Wilhelm Shrader the immigrant, mentioned at the beginning of this article? Maybe there is a more direct relation, but I have not found it. Actually, I have not looked for that since I found the Shrader family who settled in Colin, Texas.
That connection in our family tree goes through the Howard and Anglea family.

his brother Daniel Booker Shrader
his wife Ada R Rogers
her brother Addison Pierce Rogers
his wife Maude Lillian (Miller) Rogers
her brother William Bryant Miller
his wife Geneva Clementine (Howard) Miller

his father John Liter Brown
his mother Eliza Ann (Carpenter) Brown
her sister Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Shrader

F. D. Roosevelt, T. Roosevelt, Our Indirect and Direct Ancestors

In this post, we come back to the Grant family line, Susannah Delano and her husband Noah Grant Jr.

According to the research regarding our family tree, we are indirectly related via Susannah (Delano) Grant to Mr. Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The latter one was Susannah's cousin four times removed.

Susanna was married to Noah Grant Jr. who was a great-nephew of Josiah Grant (1669/1732). And Josiah was the husband of Miss Rebecca (Minor) Grant, our cousin seven times removed (whom I have already mentioned in the POST related to Mr. Hiram Ulysses Grant and the Grant/Minor family tree branch).

The above relation sounds quite complicated and it is indeed far. However, there is also another family connection which leads from Noah Grant Jr. to our direct ancestors. It is easier to follow that when it is described person by person.

Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt - Hyde Park, New York

Irena Dybowska

Irena Dybowska, my grandmother, was born on 12 Nov. 1912 in Toruń (nowadays Poland). Then, that area of Poland was under the Prussian rule, Poland as the country (due to the prior partition of the state) did not exist on the map of the world.

Anyhow, Irena was the only child of Anton/Antoni (von) Dybowski and his wife Bronisława ("Brunka") Manikowska.

Irena's mother Bronisława

Anton, my great-grandfather, was killed in WW1 when Irena was about 4 years old. Bronisława remarried but her second husband died soon too. Then, little Irena had another stepfather.

Irena and the family celebrated the girl's First Holy Communion Day in about 1921. Poland had been a free country already. I love this photo - see below.

Irena on her First Holy Communion Day (1921)

Grandma married when she was about 18 or 19. Her husband was Józef Czapczyński, Polish Gendarmerie Sergeant. In the early 1930s, Irena bore three daughters. Due to Józef's army service, the family moved frequently. Not long before WW2, they relocated to the war port area in Gdynia. Soon, the war changed their lives completely.

At the beginning of September, when Nazis attacked Poland, Józef was captured by the Nazi army soldiers and taken to a Stalag. Irena was arrested as well. Although she was brutally persuaded to sign the Volkslite, she did not break and did not do it (I wrote about that HERE).

Despite harsh living conditions during the war, grandma was taking care of her children as well as she could. The food and all usual goods were scarce but the lady was very resourceful and never gave up. When her daughters needed new shoes, she made the shoes for them. When they all needed new clothes, Irena sewed dresses for herself and the girls. To be able to support her children, Grandma found a job as well - she was a civilian worker of the war port.

Here is the ID photo of her which was taken during the war.

Józef came back from a forced labor camp in Germany in 1946. After the war, the family moved again to a city in central Poland. Irena worked as a premium train cars conductor. She enjoyed sewing and knitting in her free time.

Irena - 1959

In the 1960s, when Grandma's health seriously deteriorated and she was terminally ill, she moved back to Gdynia and stayed at her youngest daughter's. The latter one, despite having two little babies to take care of, she also looked after Irena and cared for the mother when she was on her death bed.

Grandma passed away on 5 Dec. 1965 before I could get to know her.

Wierzchosława Ludmiła, Polish Kings, Noble Men of The Holy Roman Empire and Our Direct Ancestors

Researching our direct ancestry on both paternal and maternal sides, I found quite a few kings, queens and noble persons of certain European royal houses. Each such discovery was quite a surprise, however, the greatest one was Princess Wierzchosława Ludmiła of the Piast House in our direct maternal line. Ludmiła's paternal ancestors are the very first rules of Poland including Mieszko I, the creator of the Polish state.

Actually, I first got to Wierzchosława Ludmiła's husband Ferry I de Lorraine, Duke of Lorraine, and our maternal great-grandfather (25 generations back). Then I found her, the great-grandmother. That is really great and very much unexpected!

Here are Wierzchosława Ludmiła's ancestors

 her parents

Mieszko III the Old (b. about 1126/d. 13 March 1202 of the Piast dynasty - Duke of Poland and later High Duke of Poland. In about 1136, Mieszko III married Elizabeth, Princess of Hungary (b. about 1128/d. about 1154), the daughter of King Bela II of Hungary.

her grandparents

Bolesław III The Wrymouth (b. 20 August 1086/d. 28 October 1138) - Duke of Lesser Poland, Silesia and Sandomierz (1102-1107) and entire Poland (1107-1138). His first wife and our ancestor was Salomea of Berg (born about 1099/d. 27 July 1144), daughter of Count Heinrich von Berg-Schelklingen and Adelaide of Mochental.

Poland during the rule of Bolesław III

her great-grandparents

Władysław I Herman (b. about 1044/d. 4 June 1102) - Duke of Poland. Wierzchosława's great-grandmother was Judith of Bohemia (b. about 1056/d. 25 Dec. 1086), daughter of Duke Vratislaus II of Bohemia.

her great-great-grandparents

Casimir I the Restorer (b. 25 July 1016, Cracow/d. 28 Nov. 1056, Poznań) - Duke of Poland of the Piast Dynasty and the ruler of Poland (from 1834) + Princess Dobroniega of Kiev (b. about 1012/d. 13 Dec. 1087), daughter of Grand Duke Vladimir I of Kiev.

Poznań Cathedral (10th century), Ostrów Tumski - the oldest Polish cathedral

her great-great-great-grandparents

Mieszko II Lambert (b. about 990/d. 11 May 1034) - King of Poland (1025-1031) and later Duke of Poland + Richeza of Lotharingia (b. about 995/d. 21 March 1063), granddaughter of Emperor Otto II.

Lotharingia = nowadays Netherland, Belgium, Luxembourg, North-Rhine Westphalia, Rhineland Palatinate (Germany), and Lorraine (France).

her 3 times great-grandparents

Bolesław I the Brave (b. 967/d. 17 June 1025) - Duke of Poland (992-1025), King of Poland in 1025 + Princess Emnilda (b. about 970/d. about 1017)

The statues of Mieszko I and his son Bolesław I - Poznań Cathedral, Ostrów Tumski, Poland

her 4 times great-grandparents

Mieszko I (b. about 930/d. 25 May 992, Poznań) - the ruler of the Slavic tribe of Polans, creator of the Polish state. He accepted Christianity and the baptism of Poland in 966 + Princess Doubravka of Bohemia (b. about 940/d. 977).

The tomb of Mieszko I and Bolesław I the Brave, Poznań Cathedral, Ostrów Tumski, Poland

Mieszko I was also a grandfather of Canute the Great, king of Denmark, England and Norway.

And here is the explanation of how the family branch goes down, straight to our maternal grandmother.

Wierzchosława Ludmiła

her daughter Cunégonde de Haute-Lorraine (b. about 1175, Lorraine, France/d. about 1213, Limburg, Belgium) married Waleran III of the Ardennes-Verdun dynasty. Waleran was a count of Montjoie, count of Alton and Luxembourg, and a duke of Limburg (a state in the Holy Roman Empire - nowadays the area of Liege province, Belgium). He took part in the Third Crusade (1192).

her son Henry V de Luxembourg (b. about 1216/d. 24 Dec. 1281). Henry was called the Blondell/the Great. He was count of Arlon, Luxembourg, Laroche, and Namur, and lord of Ligny.

Coat of arms of Namur

In about 1240, Henry the Blondell married Margaret of Bar (b. about 1220/d. about 1275), the daughter of Henry II de Bar and Phillippa de Dreux. Margaret was also a great-great-granddaughter of King Louis VI of France.

his daughter Isabelle de Luxembourg (b. about 1243, Luxembourg/d. 25 Sept. 1298, Namur, Belgium). In March 1246, she married Guy de Dampierre (b. about 1226/d. 7 March 1305, Compiegne, France).

Guy was the son of William II de Dampierre and Margaret de Constantinople. Isabelle's husband was Count of Flanders and Marquis of Namur. He died in the French prison after the Battle of the Golden Spurs.

Coat of arms of counts of Flanders

her daughter Marguerite (de Dampierre) Armstrong (b. about 1265/d. about 1331) - married Alexander Armstrong II, the first Laird of Magnerton castle. I wrote about him and the line which goes to Giles Gant, our 4 times great-grandfather, in a previous POST.

 Giles Gant
served for 12 months in the Revolutionary War (from 6 June 1781). He was Corporal in 6th North Carolina Regiment under Col. Archibald Lytle (1).

Giles' Revolutionary War pay voucher (2) included below.

In January 1783, Giles married Miss Elizabeth Armstrong (b. 4 February 1762, Mecklenburg, North Carolina), the daughter of William Armstrong and Margaret Woods.

I have found the marriage license and marriage bond obtained by Giles Gant, with the help of Thomas Little, on 17 January 1783 (3). Who was Thomas Little, I do not know.

The Descendants of the First Settlers in America (which is an FB group) aided me in transcribing the above document.

"Know all men by these presents to that in Giles Gant and Timothy Lytle of the County of Lincoln and State of North Carolina are held and firmly bound unto Alexander Mar Esquire Governor in three hundred pounds specie for which payment will and freely to be made and done we bind ourselves our & each of our heirs Exrs. Adminst. (Executors & Administrators) firmly by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 17th day of January 1783.

The Condition of the above obligation is such that where the above Bound Giles Gant th. day (this day) obtained a license of marriage to be celebrated between him & Elisabeth Armstrong of said County now if shall appear any future day by that there is no just cause to obstruct the said Marriage then the above obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full free x virtue.
Witness present

Giles Gant
Thomas Little"

At the same time I learned that in the 1700s such marriage bonds were a common practice. In case if the marriage did not happen or any legal obstacles appeared (e.g. one of the about to be spouses was married already) the bondsmen lost the money they had paid.

I have come across the info that Giles Gant was a farmer and justice of the peace. I wish I had known more about him.

their daughter Margaret (Gant) Lollar married Mr. Hugh Gant Lollar who was born in North Carolina, then moved to Alabama. He was the one who suggested the name for the city of Jasper, Alabama to honor the Revolutionary War hero Sgt. William Jasper.

The Census of 1870 informs that then, Hugh G Lollar Sr. lived at his son William Riley's house which was in Township 21, Range 10, Choctaw County, Mississippi (post office Mounta Vista). Hugh's youngest son David James and his wife Amanda M + their seven children lived in a house next to William Riley's (4).

More about this family line connection and Gant and Lollar ancestors mentioned in this line, you will find in my previous post HERE that is why I am not going to repeat the details regarding these persons.

her son Hugh Gant Lollar Jr. - our maternal great-great-great-grandfather

his son James Wiley Lollar - here we get to Texas - James Wiley married Melvina Donaretta Bradley in Hopkins, TX (1867)

his son Joseph W Lollar

his daughter Ethel B. Lollar - our grandmother

Ethel married Arthur Hollie McIntosh in 1910. Ten years earlier, he lived with his widowed mother and siblings in Justice Precinct 8, Upshur, Texas (5).

WWII draft registration record informs that Ethel lived in James, Texas, Route 2. However her husband was staying in Smyrna, Harrison County and he worked for Mr. Walter Bassum in Ore City, Texas (6).

More about Ethel, Samuel Hollie and their children HERE.

Indiana - Franklin County and Brookvile, marked in red

Giles Gant was a Universalist, a respected citizen of his county which he also represented in the Senate from 1853 (one term).

According to source #2 (mentioned below), Giles and Nancy Gant had 14 children: 7 sons and 7 daughters.

Lewis Deweese (b. 28 Dec. 1820 in Cedar Grove, Franklin, Indiana/d. 22 Feb. 1904, Jennings, IN) who married Susan Brackney on 12 Nov. 1839 (3). Note that his parents gave him the name of the clerk who married them in 1817 (see the record above). In 1850, the couple and their children lived in Brookville, Franklin County (4). Later, they moved to Geneva, Jennings County (5).

Lewis' first wife Susan passed in 1895. He remarried on 7 May 1896 (6) and his second spouse was Amanda Ricketts. At that time Lewis D. already lived in Sardinia, Decatur County, Indiana. He had four children Giles, Martha, William, and Ida.

There is a record of Lewis D. Gant who served as Private in 148 Regiment of the Union Army Infantry (Company H).

John Gant -  I have found no information about his birthday (the son's of Giles Sr. and Nancy's) beside the record of him in Source#2 and his marriage to Miss Margaret Powner on 3 May 1841.

Record Source:
"Indiana Marriages, 1811-2007," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XXF5-94T : 10 December 2017), John Gant and Margaret A Powner, 03 Mar 1841; citing Franklin, Indiana, United States, Marriage Registration, Indiana Commission on Public Records, Indianapolis; FHL microfilm 004170988.

The Record of Decatur County (2) says that John and Margaret had four children, two girls died young (Charlotte and Louisa), two survived (John and Mary).

At the end of his life, John bought land in Decatur, Indiana. He died a year before he managed to move out from Franklin, the county where he lived all his life. After his passing, Margaret relocated with the children to Decatur where she led a pioneer's life and supervised clearing the land and preparing it for farming. Later, Maggie married Mr. John Falkard and moved to Kansas.

Giles Gant Jr. (b. 1 July 1826, Franklin, IN/d. 2 March 1869, Fayette, Illinois) married Miss Harriett E McGaughey, born in 1829 in Indiana.

Later, the family moved to Wheatland Township, Fayette County, Illinois. The Census which occurred a year after Giles Jr.'s death recorded Harriet as the head of the family, running a farm with the help of her son Lewis and daughter Nancy (24).

According to my research results, Giles and Harriet had eight children Lewis P, Lacy C, Nancy C, James Willard, Ella T, Eppa, William, and Mary C.

Rachel Gant - the only thing which I found out about her is that she married Mr. Marshall before 1900.

Lucinda Gant (b. 10 Feb. 1833, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN/d. 16 Sept. 1882, Martinsville, Harrison, Missouri) got married when she was 27. Her husband was Mr. William H. Millholland (Mullholland according to Source #2). The ceremony took place on 7 March 1850 in Franklin, County.

Jeremiah Gant (b. 1829, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN/d. 17 March 1912, Decatur, IN) was a farmer. On 2 Oct 1855, he was married to Miss Harriett Seal, the daughter of Caleb Seal and Sarah Sanders. Harriett was born on 14 Nov. 1838.

Five years later, the couple lived with their two children Francis R and Elva Z in Jackson Township, Decatur (7). Later, the family moved to Columbia Township in Jennings County. Five more children were born to the family: Franklin, Albert B, Annie A, Lora E and George H (8).

Silas Gant, a farmer, the fifth son of Giles and Nancy's, (b. 9 April 1834, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN/d. 1925, Minneapolis, Kansas) married Amanda J Bake on 10 Oct 1858. She was born on 2 Feb. 1842 to Mr. Caleb Bake and Catherina Risley.

At the beginning of their marriage, Silas and Amanda lived in Brookville Township, Franklin, IN (9).
Like some other of his siblings, later Silas and his wife + children moved to Kansas. According to the Census record, Silas and Amanda had 8 children Elbert D, Lorinda Eva, Lewis I, Henry C, Alfred P, E Newton, E Emma (10).

Studying the Census records of 1900 and 1910, I found the information stating that Amanda had 8 living children (11,12). The data regarding the previous Census events of 1860, 1870 and 1880 mention only 7 children (9, 13, 10). However, there is a mix up in the two latter records. In 1870, a daughter Louis, born about 1863/1864 was registered. In the 1880 report there is no Louisa but Lewis I, a son, born in 1865 is mentioned. Maybe there were two of them - Louisa and Lewis - which would explain the number of children which appeared in the later Census.

Sarah Gant (b. 1830, Orange, NC/d. about 1914) married when she was 22. Her husband was Francis Marion Silas (b. 7 May 1830 in Franklin, IN), the son of  Caleb Seal and Sarah Sanders. The young couple exchanged their marriage vows on 22 Jan. 1850.

Sarah and Francis (who was a lawyer) moved from Jackson Township, Decatur, Indiana (15) to Illinois. In 1900, they lived at Barnhill Township, Wayne, Illinois (16). They had 10 children Mary Josephine, Clara Belle, Silas Wilfred,  Georgeanna, John Briton, Florence, Hershell V, Carrie D, Anna (Minnie) Frances, and Viola. Two of them (Mary Josephine and John Briton) died before 1900.

Britton Gant (b. 15 Jan. 1837, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN/d. 22 Feb 1997, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN) was a farmer and he married three times. His first wife was Rosana Moore - the marriage was on 5 July 1857.

The second wife of Britton's was Miss Martha A Russell. They married on 17 Jan. 1865.

Britton and Martha had three sons Silas Wilbur, Giles and David J.

On 10 January 1878, Britton married to Elmira J Stevens.

I found out that the third marriage fruited with at least one child, a daughter Edna W.

Reuben Gant, the youngest son of Giles and Nancy's (b. 10 July 1839, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN/d. 15 Feb. 1926, Navina, Oklahoma) married Miss Clarissa A Bake (b. 3 August 1844, Decatur, IN), the daughter of Eli Bake and Catherina Risley on 15 August 1861.

In 1870, Reuben had a farm next to his brother Britton's farm and house (17). Some years later, Reuben and his wife moved to Oklahoma. They lived in Kingfisher Ward 4, Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

Kingfisher, Oklahoma

The Census record from 1910 says Clarissa had 8 children (18). I came across the information regarding her and Reuben's sons Oliver Perry, Cavellow Wilbur, Edgar Britain, Arthur Leotis, and daughters Gertrude C, Florinda Olive, Martha Ann, and Elmina Ella. However, the 1870 Census mentions also a son Alva C, born 1864/65. I guess that could be Oliver Perry misspelled by the Census clerk?

Carolina Catherine Gant (b. July 1840, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN/d. ?) - nothing certain about her. Possibly married Mr. John W Hughes on 23 May 1864 (19)?

Mary Gant (b. about 1842, Indiana/d. ?) married Mr. William I Hines (b. 7 August 1861, IN) on 7 August 1861(20). In 1870, Mary, William (a farmer) lived with their children Ora, Dennis, David Golastus, Zerilda, and Minnie in Clay Township, Decatur, Indiana (21).

Ruth Anna Gant (b. about 1821, Cedar Grove, Franklin, IN/d. about 1851) was the oldest daughter and the third child of Giles and Nancy Gant.  On 23 Jan. 1842, when Ruth was about 21, she married Mr. Ephraim F Jackman.

The couple had two sons Attwell and William. The latter one was born about 1851. Probably Mary died around that time (?) as I found in the Census record of 1860 Attwell lived with his uncle Silas' family, and William lived with the family of his grandparents, Giles and Nancy Gant (22).

Giles Gant Sr. passed on 26 August 1877 in Franklin County, Indiana. He lived 79 years.
