Susan Brownell Anthony

Every day comes something new. Some new discovery in the family tree. This one amazes me. I did not know whom we have in the family ancestry until MyHeritage matches service sent me a message. I looked at its content and found myself surprised. Hello, I know that name! I learned about her while preparing for the citizenship civics exam.

The MyHeritage software says she is our 7th cousin twice removed. Who? Miss Susan Brownell Anthony. And her brother Mr. Daniel Read Anthony as well. Both of them were abolitionists. Susan was a civil rights activist and a suffragist, the women's rights movement supporter.

Daniel Read was a lieutenant colonel in 7th Regiment of Kansas Volunteer Cavalry (Union Army).
Susan B and Daniel R Anthony's parents were Daniel Anthony and Lucy Read.

Susan (born on 15 Feb. 1820 in Bowens Corners, Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts/d. 13 March 1906, at 17 Madison St., Rochester, Madison County, New York).

Mary Lillian Duke

Mary Lillian Duke, our third cousin twice removed*, was born to Benjamin Newton Duke and Sarah Pearson Angier on 16 Nov 1887 in Durham County, North Carolina. The Duke family line originates in Kent, England.

In 1900, the Census recorded the family of Benjamin and Sarah Duke as the residents of Durham Township, Durham City, Durham, North Carolina (1).

Household
Benjamin W Duke, Head, Male, age 44, born North Carolina
Sarah Duke, Wife, Female, age 39, born North Carolina
Angier Duke, Son, Male, age 16, born North Carolina
Mary Duke, Daughter, Female, age 13, born North Carolina
Mary Shartman, Servant, Female, age 51, born North Carolina
Mary Lunsford, Servant, Female, age 20, born North Carolina

In 1907 Mary graduated from Durham's Trinity College (with a degree in English). She was keen on arts and music. Eight years later on 16 June 1915, Mary Lillian married Mr. Anthony Joseph Drexel Briddle, Jr. (b. 17 Dec. 1897, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania), son of a millionaire Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle, Sr.

Mary's husband was a businessman and a politician. Among others, Anthony Joseph Drexel Briddle, Jr. was 5th US Ambassador to Poland (from 2 June 1937 to 1 Dec. 1943).

The couple had two children Mary Duke (born 21 Feb. 1920, New York, New York, New York) and Nicholas Benjamin Duke (b. 1 Sept. 1921). The daughter became an art lover and supporter like her mom, and a social and civil rights activist as well. She was also involved in politics and philanthropy.

Benjamin Duke House, Fifth Ave., New York

Mary Lillian Durham Biddle started a charity foundation in 1956, she supported various non-profit organizations.

In 1935, Mary bought an estate in Durham where she lived until the day of her death (14 June 1960).

Mary Duke Biddle Durham estate in Durham, the house  was built in 1927

Mary's body found an eternal resting place at the Duke Mausoleum, Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC (2).

Family line:

Mary Lillian Duke

her father Benjamin Newton Duke (b. 25 April 1855, Orange County, NC/d. 8 Jan. 1929, New York City) an industrialist, politician and philanthropist married Sarah Pearson Angier on 21 Feb. 1877 in Durham, Orange County, North Carolina (3). Sally was born on 19 Feb. 1856, her parents were Maulborne Addison Angier, an industrialist, businessman, politician, co-founder of Durham, and Mary Jane Pearson

his mother Artelia (Roney) Duke (b. 28 June 1829, Haw River, Alamance, North Carolina/d. 20 August 1858, Haw River, Alamance, North Carolina), daughter of John Roney, a farmer, and Mary Trollinger

In 1850, Artelia lived with her parents and siblings in the North District of Alamance County, NC (4).

Household

John Roney, Male, age 58
Mary Roney, Female, age 50
Polly Roney, Female, age 29
Elizabeth Roney, Female, age 23

Calvin Roney, Male, age 18
Armecia Roney, Female, age 16
Joseph Roney, Male, age 14
Barbara Roney, Female, age 11
Amos Roney, Male, age 8

Artelia married Mr. Washington Duke on 9 Dec. 1852.

Her parents John Roney and Mary Trollinger married on 12 Dec. 1815 in Orange, NC (5,6).

her mother Mary (Trollinger) Roney - (b. 25 March 1800, Orange, NC/d. 11 August 1879, Haw River, Alamance, NC), a daughter of Jacob Henry Trollinger and Mary Thomas

her sister Mary Elizabeth (Trollinger) Gant - our great-great-great-grandmother (born Dec 1791, Orange, North Carolina)

In some family trees there is confusion - the two Marys, Trollinger sisters, are taken as one person Mary Elizabeth Trollinger Roney Gant and two husbands are assigned to her - both John Roney (the younger sister's man) and Jonathan Kerr Gant. However, when you look at the years of their children birth, one can notice that it is a mix up - Mary Elizabeth would have had two husbands at the same time. At least I find it as a research error.

Mary Elizabeth Trollinger married our direct ancestor Jonathan Kerr Gant in 1808.

her son Jacob Rippy Gant - our great-great-grandfather

his son Henry A Gant (b. about 1838, Orange, NC/d. about 1880, Sumner, Tennessee) married Miss Hellen Jane Shanklin on 11 Dec. 1859 in Sumner, TN. Hellen (Ellen) was a daughter of James John and Jane Shanklin. In 1880, Henry, his wife and their eight children lived in 7th District of Sumner County, Tennessee. Henry was a farmer (7).

John Wilfred Gant And Gants of Iowa And Ohio

Not long ago, while working on the Memorial Day post, I came across the information regarding John Wilfred Gant born on 25 November 1921, in Iowa. During WWII, John served on the submarine USS Albacore as Motor Machinist's Mate, Third Class. His service number was 859191. Sadly, the man perished together with the entire crew on 7 November 1944, when Albacore hit a mine north-east of Hokkaido, Japan.

John Wilfred Gant was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. In the honorary death certificate, John's death day is given as 13 Dec. 1945, I guess, it was when he was officially recognized as Missing in Action/perished. John Wilfred's name is immortalized on the Honolulu Memorial.

I did not write about John and his WWII service in the Memorial Day Memento, because at that time, I had no clue what the relation between him and our family could be. I reckon there is a possibly of some connection (?) as I have already found an Iowa Gant line in our family tree. Cousin Darwin D Gant of Paton, Green, Iowa was killed in WW2 as well. How the two men John Wilfred and Darwin are connected - I am trying to find out.

John's parents were Everett Jay Gant and India (Indiana) Ford of Iowa. They married on 6 May 1912 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska. India was the second wife of Everett's. There is a record of his first marriage (30 August 1909, Marengo, Iowa, Iowa) to Miss Grace Rumple (1), daughter of Daniel Rumple and Mary Hutchinson.

India was the daughter of  Isaac Andrew Ford and Katherine Jane Miller (2).

Everett was born on 22 August 1886 in Victor, Iowa, Iowa. His parents were John Wendell Gant and Iva Hinder (3).

WW1 came, Everett was registered during the draft. He lived with his wife and children in Ohio, Des Moines, Iowa. He was a tall, stout man, his eyes were blue and hair was brown. The man had a 3-year training as an army musician (4).

In 1920 the family of Everett and India's lived in Des Moines, Ward 1, Polk County, Iowa. The couple had three children Alve L, Belva I. Everett worked as a brakesman with Steam Rail Road (5).

Alva Leo Gant, John's older brother was born on 7 Feb. 1913 in Redfield, Iowa (6).
Belva Imogene, the only daughter of Everett and India's was born on 12 Sept. 1914 in Redfield, Dallas County, Iowa (7).

Five years later, John and family lived in Polk City, Polk, Iowa (8).

I did not find John's WW2 draft registration record, but there is his father's paper (9). What is interesting, in that document Everett's eye color is marked as gray (not blue as it was in the previous war record). He was 5 ft 11 and he weighed about 210 pounds.

John Wilfred's grandparents were James Gant and Maria Preedmore (10).

John Walter Angel And Other Relations

Our relations to the Angel family go via the Howards and our grandmother Rachel. I wrote about the Angels a long time ago, but somehow, I missed one person then. Time to make it up.

John Walter Angel was born on 22 Sept. 1874 in Sumner County, Tennessee. His parents were Marcus Lafayette Angle and Mammie Erena Jones.

When John was little, the family moved to Texas. On 29 August 1906, John Walter Angel married Miss Lula Vance. It happened in Ellis County, Texas. In the marriage record included below, the bride's first name is spelled in two different ways - first - it's Lula. A few lines below her name is given as Lela (1). In all later created documents, the latter versions repeated.

Anyway, Lela was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Jefferson Vance and Miss Willie Margaret Roulston. The girl was born on 31 July in Macon, Tennessee.

The young couple lived at #1 in Plano, Texas. John Walter was a farmer. The WW1 registration draft tells us that he was a man of medium height, medium built, his eyes were gray, and his hair was brown (2).

By 1920 John and Lela's family had grown. The two had 5 children. During the census of that year, they lived in Justice Precinct #5, in Plano, Texas. John ran a rented farm.

Albert L Angel, Son, M, age 6, born Texas
Bessie L Angel, Daughter, F, age 3, born Texas
Tressie M Angel, Daughter, F, age 3, born Texas

The census record informs that John Walter and Lela's place was close to the farm of Robert and Dora Howard's. Dora Angel was John's sister. Another relation lived nearby as well. It was Martha Alice Dupree nee Gant (b. 12 March 1870 in Sumner, TN). Her husband John Edward departed in 1914.

Colonel Nicholas Greenberry

Col. Nicholas Greenberry, 4th Royal Governor of Maryland, was born in Lincolnshire, England on 15 Dec. 1640 to Nicholas Greenberry and Katherine Haukins.

Lincolnshire, England

In 1674, Nicholas Jr. sailed to America with his wife Anne and two children (Charles and Catherine) on the ship Constant Friendship. They settled in Maryland.

his daughter Katherine (Greenberry) Howard (b. about 1670-1674 in Middlesex, England/d. 29 Dec. 1704, Anne Arundel County, Province of Maryland) + husband Capt. John Howard Jr. (b. about 1667, Middle Neck Hundred, Anne Arundel, Province of Maryland)

her daughter Katherine (Howard) Griffith (b. about 1703, Anne Arundel County, Province of Maryland/d. 7 Feb. 1783, Anne Arundel County, Maryland) + husband Orlando Griffith (b. 17 Oct. 1688, Anne Arundel County, Province of Maryland)

William Griffith (of Cardigan, Wales) who was Orlando's father came to Maryland in 1675.

Cardigan, Wales

The Griffith family was one of the pioneer families of Anne Arundel County in Maryland.

Orlando Griffith was a grandson of the second wife of Capt. John Howard Jr., Elinor McCubbin - he has been already mentioned in the posts about the Howard family connections.

Orlando's home was known as White Place. In 1728, he became a vestry member of Queen Caroline Parish, and occupied pew No. 8, together with Capt. John Howard and Nicholas Dorsey.

Nicholas Dorsey Sr.  (b. about 1690, Maryland/d. Sept. 1717, All Hallows Parish, Maryland) is our direct ancestor as well. His son Col. Nicholas Dorsey Jr. (b. about 1712, Maryland/d. 1780) Sarah A Griffith (b. 13 May 1718/d. 1 Sept. 1794), Orlando's daughter.

The direct family line which goes from Orlando Griffith to our great-grandmother Jurita was already described in the post related to Mr. Harry Truman.

her daughter Sarah A (Griffith) Dorsey
her daughter Rachel Annie (Dorsey) Holbrook
  her son William Holbrook
  his son Samuel Asberry Holbrook
  his daughter Mary (Holbrook) Hagood/Haygood
her daughter Hannah E (Hagood) Ledbetter
  her daughter Jurita Elizabeth Ledbetter

Howard Family Line

Checking one of the direct family ancestry lines. I came across the missing link between our American/Texan Howards and the knights, noblemen of England. At the same, time I learned quite new things about the latter ones (who appear to be our direct ancestors as well).

 Here is the Howard line

Rachel Clementine Howard - our great-grandmother

her father  William James Howard - our great-great-grandfather

his father Jarrot Howard

his father Christopher Howard (b. 1774, Fairforest Creek, Union County, South Carolina/d. 8 October 1848, Kentucky) married Miss Rebecca Hayes in about 1795, Barren County, Kentucky. Rebecca was the daughter of Thomas Jesse and Mary Howard. She was born about 1775 in Province of North Carolina

his father Rev. Obediah Howard (b. 3 March 1741, Onslow Co., North Carolina/d. 4 Oct. 1804, Tompkinsville, Barren County, Kentucky) + wife Priscilla Avery Breed - more about them in this post

his father Stephen Edmund Howard (b. 18 March 1694, Nansemond, Virginia/d. about 1745, New River, Onslow, North Carolina) + wife Sarah Sanders, a daughter of John Sanders and Phoebe Thomas, born in North Carolina in about 1709. Stephen and Sarah married about 1720, NC.

his father James Obediah Howard (b. circa 1660, Kingsdale, Virginia/d. about 1729, Bertie, North Carolina) - in Nansemond, Virginia he married Miss Sarah Crea nee Titus (b. 11 Dec. 1702, New Kent County, Virginia), the daughter of  Mr. Thomas Titus and Miss Mary Warren Chown

his mother  Mary (Chowan) Howard (b. about 1650, prob. Anne Arundel County/d. 21 April 1721, Bertie, North Carolina), her husband was Edward Francis Howard (b. about 1640, London, Middlesex, England/d. /d. 19 April 1722, Bertie, North Carolina

There has been a dispute among researches regarding who Edward's parents were. Some say it might have been John Howard Sr. and Elizabeth Locke (see below), others find it doubtful.

Here the line goes directly to either Matthew Howard or Mary's mother Anne Hall. Some sources mention Matthew Howard as Mary's father, some say it was Mr. Thomas Chowan because Anne had more than one husband.

Here we come from England to the New World

her mother Anne (Hall) Chowan Howard (b. 25 Oct. 1610, Felmersham, Bedfordshire, England/d. about 1658, Anne Arundel County, Province of Maryland

River Ouse, Felmensham, Bedfordshire, England

her husband Matthew Howard* (b. 1609,  Essex, England/d. 8 July 1659, Anne Arundel County, Province of Maryland) - probably emigrated to Virginia in the 1630s, later relocated to Maryland

his father John Howard Sr. (1 Dec. 1578, Brockdish Hall, Norfolk, England/d.  4 April 1672, Norwich, Norfolk, England) married Elizabeth Locke (b. about 1580, England) on 26 Nov. 1606 in England

Pulls Ferry, Norwich, Norfolk, England

and here is a controversial connection

his father Robert Howard (b. 5 Jan. 1537, Syon House, London, England/d. 1578, Tibenham, Norfolk, England) - there is a story about him being the son of

his father Lord Thomas Howard (b. about 1511) and his wife Lady Margaret Douglas (b. 8 Oct. 1515, Harbottle, Northumberland, England) who was the daughter of Margaret Tudor.

Harbottle Lake, England

Thomas was Mary Boleyn's uncle. Margaret's uncle was Henry VIII. Allegedly, the two (Margaret and Thomas) married secretly in April 1536, without the consent of King Henry.

The affair was serious as Margaret was the next candidate to the throne after her uncle. Anyway, the king got angry, had both Thomas and Margaret locked up in the Tower of London and annulled their marriage. Thomas Howard died in The Tower prison on 31 Oct. 1537. Margaret survived the family drama - Henry pardoned and released her.

I have "found" Robert by accident, while checking another family tree branch, not really looking for him.

Some genealogists deny this family relation and claim that Robert was not born in Syon House, and he actually was the son of John Howard the Knight. However, if his parental line is true, there would have been reasons for denying the lineage. I am not a historian, so I do not have any proof on who Robert's parents were, but in my opinion, with the illegitimate children that Henry had, a legitimate son of a socially and politically inconvenient and unwanted union could have been possible as well.

his father Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk (b. about 1443, Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, England/d. 21 May 1524, Framlingham Castle, Suffolk, England) married Lady Elizabeth Tilney

Tendring Hall, front door, Stoke-by-Nayland, England

his father John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk (b. about 421/d. 22 August 1485, Battle of Bosworth Field, Market Bosworth, Leicestershire, England) - knighted by King Edward IV, Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk (1461), admitted to the Order of the Garter (1472), supporter of King Richard III - married Catherine Moleyns, daughter of Sir William Moleyns + wife Margery

his father Robert Howard of Tendring, Knight (b. about 1385, Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, England/d. 1 April 1437, Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, England) married Lady Margaret Mowbray, daughter of Thomas de Mowbray, 4th Earl of Norfolk

his father Sir John Howard of Wiggenhall, Knight (b. 1366/d. 17 Nov. 1437, Jeruzalem) married Alice Tendring, daughter of Sir William Tendring

St Mary Magdalene Church, Wiggenhall, England

* There is also another Matthew Howard recorded in family trees. Although he was born about 1609 in England and died in Anne Arundel, Maryland as well, he seems to be a different person than the Matthew mentioned above.

See the other Matthew's line:

his father Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel (b. 7 July 1585, England/d. 4 Oct. 1646, Padua, Italy)

his father Philip Howard, 20th Earl of Arundel (b. 25 June 1557, Strand, London, England/d. 19 Oct. 1595, Tower of London)

his father Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (b. about 1537, Norfolk, England/d. 30 Sept. 1572, beheaded, Tower Hill, London, England)

his father Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (b. about 1517/d. 1546/47, accused of treason and executed, London, England)

his father Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk (b. about 1473, Norfolk, England/d. 25 August 1554, Kenninghall, Norfolk, England) - a brother of Lord Thomas Howard

his father Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk - here we come back to the family line described above which goes to Sir John Howard of Winneghall, Knight

Edward Bompasse

Time for our another direct ancestry line and Edward Bompasse/Bumpas - our nine times great-grandfather.

Possibly, The Bumpas/Bunpas family was of French origin (Perpignan, south-western France).

Bridge over Basse River, Perpignan, France

However, Edward (or Edouad as he was also called) was born in about 1605 in Saint Bartholomew Parish in London, England. Probably, Edward was Protestant and therefore, spent some time in Leyden, Holland. Anyhow, on 10 Nov. 1621, young Bompasse came to Plymouth on the ship Fortune.

Two years later, he received an acre of land and cattle. Edward married Hanna in about 1628 - the couple had at least twelve children.

In about 1635, Edward sold his land and relocated to Marshfield where he obtained property and stayed for a few years.

North River, Marshfield, Massachusetts

Finally, the man moved with his family to Middleborough and then, to Duxbury.

The Atlantic Ocean (right)  and Duxbury Bay (left)

Later in his life, after 1665, allegedly, Edward experienced financial difficulties. Regarding the day of his death - various sources give different information on that matter. Some say he died on 3 Feb. 1693 in Marshfield, Plymouth, Massachusetts, others claim it happened before 5 March 1583.

Edward Bompasse - family line

his son John Bumpas (b. 6 Feb. 1636, Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts/d. 17 May 1715, Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts) + wife Sarah Hunter (b. Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts) - they married about 1760.

Sarah's grandfather was Augustine Bearse (b. 1618, Southampton, Hampshire, England). Supposedly, he was a Gypsy deported from England for a crime he committed there. Augustine was made a freeman in 1652.

his daughter Mary (Bumpas) Benson (b. 20 August, Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts/d. about 1715 Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts), her husband was Isaac Benson (b. 14 May 1669, Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts) - got married on 17 March 1699 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts

Cape Cod, Sandwich area, Massachusetts

his daughter Ruth (Benson) Phillips (b. 7 Oct. 1704, Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts/d. 19 April 1741, Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island) + husband David Phillips (b. about 1702, Providence, Providence, Rhode Island) = married on 19 April 1741 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island

her daughter Susannah Ann (Phillips) Gant (b. 21 Jan. 1740, Bristol, Bristol, Rhode Island/d. April 1792, Shocco Township, Warren, North Carolina) married John Spencer Gant (b. about 1734, Isle of Wight, Virginia) on 11 August 1760 in North Carolina

her son William Gant (b. 14 August 1763, Granville County, North Carolina/d. 26 Dec. 1824, Orange County, North Carolina) + wife Frances "Fanny" Rippy (b. 18 Oct. 1760, Orange County, North Carolina) - they married on 7 July 1840, Orange, North Carolina

his son Jonathan Kerr Gant (b. 4 April 1787, Orange, NC/d. 3 Sept. 1858, Haw River, Alamance, NC) + wife Mary Elizabeth Trollinger (b. Dec. 1791, Orange, NC = they married in about 1808, Alamance, NC

his son Jacob Rippy Gant - our great-great-grandfather
