Edward Bompasse

Time for our another direct ancestry line and Edward Bompasse/Bumpas - our nine times great-grandfather.

Possibly, The Bumpas/Bunpas family was of French origin (Perpignan, south-western France).

However, Edward (or Edouad as he was also called) was born in about 1605 in Saint Bartholomew Parish in London, England. Probably, Edward was Protestant and therefore, spent some time in Leyden, Holland. Anyhow, on 10 Nov. 1621, young Bompasse came to Plymouth on the ship Fortune.

Two years later, he received an acre of land and cattle. Edward married Hanna in about 1628 - the couple had at least twelve children.

In about 1635, Edward sold his land and relocated to Marshfield where he obtained property and stayed for a few years.

Finally, the man moved with his family to Middleborough and then, to Duxbury.

Later in his life, after 1665, allegedly, Edward experienced financial difficulties. Regarding the day of his death - various sources give different information on that matter. Some say he died on 3 Feb. 1693 in Marshfield, Plymouth, Massachusetts, others claim it happened before 5 March 1583.



Edward Bompasse - family line

⇒ his son John Bumpas (b. 6 Feb. 1636, Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts/d. 17 May 1715, Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts) + wife Sarah Hunter (b. Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts) - they married about 1760.

Sarah's grandfather was Augustine Bearse (b. 1618, Southampton, Hampshire, England). Supposedly, he was a Gypsy deported from England for a crime he committed there. Augustine was made a freeman in 1652.

⇒ his daughter Mary (Bumpas) Benson (b. 20 August, Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts/d. about 1715 Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts), her husband was Isaac Benson (b. 14 May 1669, Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts) - got married on 17 March 1699 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts

⇒ his daughter Ruth (Benson) Phillips (b. 7 Oct. 1704, Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts/d. 19 April 1741, Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island) + husband David Phillips (b. about 1702, Providence, Providence, Rhode Island) = married on 19 April 1741 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island

⇒ her daughter Susannah Ann (Phillips) Gant (b. 21 Jan. 1740, Bristol, Bristol, Rhode Island/d. April 1792, Shocco Township, Warren, North Carolina) married John Spencer Gant (b. about 1734, Isle of Wight, Virginia) on 11 August 1760 in North Carolina

⇒ her son William Gant (b. 14 August 1763, Granville County, North Carolina/d. 26 Dec. 1824, Orange County, North Carolina) + wife Frances "Fanny" Rippy (b. 18 Oct. 1760, Orange County, North Carolina) - they married on 7 July 1840, Orange, North Carolina

⇒ his son Jonathan Kerr Gant (b. 4 April 1787, Orange, NC/d. 3 Sept. 1858, Haw River, Alamance, NC) + wife Mary Elizabeth Trollinger (b. Dec. 1791, Orange, NC = they married in about 1808, Alamance, NC
