Henry Montgomery Dye

I have already mentioned Mr. Henry M Dye in the post related to his daughter Madora Ellen and her husband Jackson Harrison Bowman. However, since he was the first doctor and one of the early settlers of Plano, Texas he deserves more than a note in another article.

Henry Montgomery Dye is credited for naming the city of Plano (the name related to the Spanish word "llano" = plain).

Henry Montgomery Dye, the eldest child of Thomas Dye and Mary Duey, was born on 30 September 1830 in Wood County, Virginia. In 1848, Henry moved to Plano. The 20-year-old physician was registered by the clerk of 1850 Census at the household of Mr. Joseph Klepper (1).

At the same time, Henry's parents and siblings lived in Dallas County, Texas. Mr. Thomas Dye was a carpenter, Henry's younger brother John ran a farm (2).

When Henry was 24, he married Miss Sarah Skiles (b. 28 Feb. 1834 in Three Springs, Warren, Kentucky). The ceremony took place on 27 April 1854. Henry's spouse was the daughter of Mr. Jacob Clemens Skiles and Miss Sarah Elizabeth Alice Moore.

During the Civil War, Dr. Henry Dye served as the Confederate Army surgeon in Little Rock and Camden, Arkansas.

In 1870, Henry, Sarah, and their children were recorded during the census. The family lived in Plano, Precinct #5, Collin, Texas. Sarah's parents lived with them as well (3).

Dr. H. M. Dye was also one of the main founders of the Presbyterian Church in Plano (1871).

• Mary Elizabeth (b. 20 Feb. 1873/d. 9 Feb. 1957) married Joel Lively Aldridge on 19 Dec. 1890 (7),

• Thomas Clemens (b. 29 Feb. 1876/d. 18 August 1952), a physician, married Emma L McKamey on 7 March 1906 (8).

Henry got ill and the family moved to Mason County with the hope that it would help the father of the family recover. However, it was his wife Sarah Elizabeth who left this world first, on 6 March 1878. After that, Henry came back to Plano. His health gradually deteriorated. He died of TB on 10 August 1878 in Plano.

Andrew Eugene Gant of Tennessee

Andrew Eugene Gant, our 3 rd cousin once removed, was born on 14 Nov. 1889 in Fountain Head, Tennessee. He was the oldest child of Andrew Ewing Gant and Martha Ann "Maggie" Durham and also a direct descendant of our great-great-grandfather Jacob Rippy Gant's brother Henry.

Andrew's parents got married on 6 Nov. 1878 in Tennessee (1).

In 1900, our Andrew lived with his parents and siblings in Civil District 14 of Sumner County, Tennessee (2). His father was a farmer.

Andrew Eugene is standing at the back (the third from the left). The photo was probably taken about 1901/2 as the youngest child of Andrew Ewing and Mary Ann's, Brodie D was born then.

When our cousin was 20, he married (3) Miss Lena C. Hudson (b. 1892 in Kentucky). She was the daughter of Mr. Thomas W. and Martha Hudson.

The young couple settled at RFD #3 in Fountain Head, Tennessee, where Andrew ran a farm. On the WW1 draft registration card, Andrew wrote his middle name as "Eyngen". Maybe it is just a spelling error? The same WW1 document informs also that cousin Andrew was a medium height man, he had brown eyes and black hair (4).

Anyhow, as later official records show, his closest relatives called him Genie. He and Lena had 6 children. The Census of 1930 recorded the family in District 11 of Robertson County, Tennessee (5).

Andrew Eugene, wife Lena and their children. There is a family story connected with the picture - it  was taken to commemorate and celebrate "the greatest tobacco crop in Robertson County"* (it was probably around 1932).

Robert Edward (b. 1923) married Miss Floriene Onolee Fillmore (born in 1922) on 23 Nov. 1943 (10).

Eva Catherine (b. 8 May 1927) married Mr. Melvin T Chandler on 4 August 1948.


Andrew Eugene's wife Lena passed in 1964. He died four years later, in Dec. 1970 in White House, Robertson, Tennessee (11).

Jonathan Mason Gant (b. 1830, Orange, North Carolina/d. about 1880, Sumner, NC), our 1st cousin 3 times removed, married (12,13) Zelphea A Dorris (b. about 1831, Tennessee). It happened on 6 August 1850 in Sumner, Tennessee.

"According to our research, Andrew Ewing Gant married Martha Durham on November 6, 1878, and they had one son, Henry Gant, born 1879. However, the trail goes cold from there for both Martha and Henry. It is assumed they both died. Then Andrew Ewing married Margaret (“Maggie”) Pardue [Woodward] on March 22, 1884. [My mother and I visited the archives in Sumner County, Tennessee in approximately 2010 and viewed the marriage certificate in microfiche. However, I cannot place my hands on it  at the moment. I’ll keep looking and if you’re interested, I can send it to you.] She brought with her one son, James Woodward, born 1879 (his father died in 1880). With Maggie, Andrew Ewing had five children: Andrew Eugene (“Genie”), Georgia (“Georgie”), Pearl (“Pearlie”), John F., and Brodie as you have listed from the 1900 census on your page."

A year later, he married 21-year-old Miss Sophie Irene Vinson (b. 29 Dec. 1920). The marriage ceremony took place on 26 March 1942 in Robertson County, TN (2, 3).

Together with his 121st Infantry Regiment of Tennessee, cousin Claude was relocated to Germany. Among others, they fought in the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, east of the Belgian/German border.

Claude's 8th Division (called "Pathfinder") attacked the Weisser Weh Valley on 21 Nov. 1944. Staff Sergeant Claude Gant perished a few days later on 25 Nov., before Hürtgen was taken (29 Nov.).

He was awarded the Purple Heart medal.

Claude was buried at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery Hombourg, Belgium (Plot D, Row 1, Grave 60). The cross with his name and rank is part of Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery and Memorial.

Second Lieutenant US Army Air Forces Darwin D Gant (b. 27 Nov. 1922, Patton, Green, Iowa), our 4th cousin once removed, the son of  Dean Dorset Gant and Clara Lenore Gordinier (4).

Darwin's service number was O-705080. His plane was shot down over Iceland on 21 July 1944 (5).

His name and service has been commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing in Action at the Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England.

Private Lee J. Gant (b. 1923, Illinois), the son of  James Francis Gant and Lula L Davis. Lee J was our 5th cousin twice removed.

Lee J fought in France and Belgium with 28th Division of 112th Infantry Regiment. Private Lee J Gant was killed in action, during the Battle of Bulge on 23 Dec.1944. A day later the battle ended.

Our fallen cousin was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster medal.

Lee J Gant found his eternal resting place at the same cemetery where Walter Claude was buried - at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery Hombourg, Belgium (Plot E, Row 1, Grave 11).

Leonard served with 369th Coast Artillery Regiment of Illinois in the Hawaiian Islands. He was killed on 15 April 1943. His name and service has been memorialized on the Missing in Action Wall at the Honolulu Memorial.

Sheriff Albert McCauley

I came across the information who Albert McCauley was while searching for some details on the Texas Ranger W. J. McCauley. Although I did not find any family connection to the latter one, I am happy to be able to tell you more about Albert who appeared to be a lawman as well.

Albert McCauley was the son of Charles Leslie McCauley and Fannie Hicks. He was the couples' oldest child who came to this world on 15 Feb. 1873 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas.

In 1880, Albert lived with his parents and family in Harrison, White County, Arkansas (1).

By 1891 the family moved to Texas. There is a note published in The Democrat (issued in McKinney, Texas on Thursday, 16 April 1891) which informs that Mr. C. L. McCauley, a Wylie citizen, visited Plano on 14 April 1891 on business (2). C. L. was Charles Leslie, Albert's father.

On 15 Jan. 1896 Albert married Miss Ola May Day (b. in Feb. 1877 in Georgia), the daughter of James Marshall day and Nancy Katherine McIntyre (3).

The newspaper clipping included below informs that the marriage took place in Parker, Collin, Texas.

Parker, Texas

 On 3 June 1900, Albert was probably visiting his parents when that year's Census clerk came to make records regarding Charles Leslie and Fannie's household. They lived with their children in Wylie (Justice Precinct 5, east part), Collin County, Texas. An interesting fact is that not far from their place, in Wylie, the family of our relative Lucillous Lee Gant was recorded as well. Studying the Census document I learned that L. Lee Gant was a blacksmith (4).

Anyway, why I say Albert was visiting his parents - because three days later, the same Census clerk came to Albert's home and listed Albert, Ola and their two children, daughter Lennie and son James Porter. Their household was in the same Wylie area where Albert's parents and siblings lived. Albert was a farmer then (5).

There is a mistake in that record - Albert's parents were born in North Carolina and Tennessee not in Arkansas.

Sometime later, Albert, Ola and children moved to McKinney. Albert was a Deputy Sheriff, nominated by Sheriff G. M. Eubanks (6).

Albert and Ola McCauley were respected citizens of the local society.

On 3 November 1914, Albert McCauley was elected the Sheriff of McKinney (7).

Later in his life, Albert worked as a Special Agent with the Steam Railroad. In 1930, he was staying temporarily at the home of Mr. Luthur J Raley (Steam Railroad Inspector) in Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas. It is interesting that Albert's marital status was noted as "widowed" though his wife was alive then (8). You may say - so it is not our Albert but somebody else of the same name. Actually it is him. Ola McCauley, the wife of Albert and their children lived in McKinney then, and during the same Census of 1930, she was also recorded as "widowed" (9). maybe that was what the clerks did when a husband or wife was not living with their family. Very confusing regarding the ancestry research.

Albert McCauley died due to coronary occlusion on 15 August 1941 (10).

Arlee McCauley mentioned in the clipping was actually R Lee McCauley born on 24 Oct. 1902. He was a restaurant employee (11). John McCauley was George Garnett McCauley (b. 25 April 1908). Another mistake is the spelling of Lennie's husband's surname and his initials. Lennie's spouse was Mr. Frank J Felden and Vivian's husband was Malcolm Kinney (12).

Two other children of Albert and Ola's:
James Porter McCauley was born on 15 Oct. 1898, Dora Vivian on 4 Dec. 1904, Lennie in Feb 1897.

I have not any connections between Sergeant William J McCauley, Texas Ranger and Sheriff Albert McCauley. However, their fathers were both born in North Carolina so there might be a family connection there.

John Coffee "Jack" Hays

The visit to The Texas Rangers Heritage Center inspired me to write about John Coffee "Jack" Hays who was a Ranger as well.

According to my finds*, John is our indirect relative via Miss Rachel Donelson, the wife of President Andrew Jackson, and a sister of John's grandmother Jane. You will find more explicit information on this family line at the end of this post.

John was the son of Mr. Harmon Atkins Hays and his wife Elizabeth Cage. He was born on 28 Jan. 1817 in Little Cedar Lick, Wilson County, Tennessee. John's father named the baby boy after Colonel John Coffee.

In 1936 John Coffee Hays relocated to Texas. Thanks to the letter written by his relative President Andrew Jackson, the young man became a Texas Ranger.

Capt. Jack served in:

• Bexar Spy Company of Frontier Volunteers from 13 Sept. 1842 to 17 January 1843 - between The San Antonio and Rio Grande Rivers, 
• Company of Rangers (Frontier Ranging Company) from 20 February to 10 Nov. 1843 - Counties: Bexar, Refugio, Robertson, Milam, Travis, and Goliad including the Camp at Leona River in 1843,
• Frontier Ranging Company (Corps of Rangers) from 20 Feb. to 10 Nov. 1843 and from 27 June 1844 to 28 Sept. 1845 - Bexar County and San Antonio.

Companies which operated under Capt. J. C. Hays personal orders:

• Robertson County Rangers - Feb. to 15 Sept. 1845 - served between The Brazos and Trinity River,
•  Goliad and Refugio Rangers Corps (Volunteers), Mountain Volunteers
• Travis County Rangers (Austin Rangers), Travis County Ranger Corps

On 29 April 1847, in Sequin, Bexar, Texas John married Miss Susan Calvert (b. about 1827 in Alabama), the daughter of Jeremiah Strother Calvert and Priscilla Smither (1).

Two years after the marriage, Jack together with his wife, emigrated to California (2). The family settled in Oakland Township, Alameda County (3).

On 23 June 1880, they were recorded during the Census. John Coffee Hays and his son John Caperton were real estate agents. The Hays had four servants including a cook and a coachman (4).

John and Susan had at least six children. Three of them Richard, Kitty and Susan died young.

John Coffee "Jack" Hays lived 66 years. He passed on 21 April 1883 in Oakland. After his death, an article and memento summarizing his life was printed (5) in San Marcos Free Press which was issued in Hays County, Texas (the county was named for J. C. Hays in 1848).

The above clipping contains an error - in 1823 John was 6 years old and lived in Tennessee. I guess, the author of the article meant 1853. Anyway, that piece is followed by more detailed information regarding John's life and achievements (5). Besides being Texas Rangers Captain, he was also Colonel of the Volunteer Army.
