Raymond Gantt of Princeton, Texas

Looking through the old newspapers (Portal to Texas History), I came across this message.

Clipping source: Perkins, Tom W. & Wilson, Walter B. The Weekly Democrat-Gazette (McKinney, Tex.), Vol. 36, Ed. 1 Thursday, May 15, 1919, newspaper, May 15, 1919; McKinney, Texas. Since our ancestors lived in Collin County, Texas (where Princeton also is) I wondered which of the cousins the Ramond Gant could be. I checked in our family tree, however, there was no Raymond Gant except our 4th cousin 3 times removed, John Raymond Gantt, the son of John Walter Gantt and Julia Ames DeSteiguer. That John Raymond was born on 19 July 1905 in Texas so most likely, he was too young to fight in WW1.

Consequently, I started further research to find the guy mentioned in the newspaper information piece. First, I tried my luck with the old newspapers included in Portal to Texas History. I found the names of Raymond's immediate relatives (at least some of them). Then, the Internet led me to the website which I had already known (Collin County History). More details brought the copies of documents listed at FamilySearch.

Here are the results of my work.

First of all, the man's full name was John Raymond Gantt. He was born on 28 June 1894 in Princeton, Collin, TX (1). John R's parents were Mort Couts Gantt and Lillie Florence Wilson who got married on 30 August 1891 in Collin, TX (2).

Mort Couts Gantt (b. 8 August 1871, Kaufman County, TX/d. 31 July, McKinney, Collin, TX) was one of the children of Dr. John C. Gantt and Jane Hardin (3). Mort's siblings were John, Sarah, William, Laura Jennie, Robert, Susie M, and Edward C.

W H Gant was Mort's elder brother William. Mrs. Henry Wallace was Laura Jennie Gantt (b. 17 March 1860, TX/d. 8 Dec. 1930, Collin, TX). Susie M Gantt (b. 17 March 1864, TX/d. 9 Jan. 1931, Collin, TX) was the wife of Mr. Elmer L Wallace (b.1861/d. 1952). Henry Orman Wallace (b. 1 April 1853/d. 4 June 1926) and Elmer L were brothers. There are other Wallace people in our family tree, I have no idea, though how and if the two Wallace men are related to our Wallaces in any way. It seems that later, the spelling of Elmer and Henry's surname got changed to Wallis.

Anyway, during WW1 John Raymond served as Private (4) in the Infantry. The record included below tells us that Raymond's mother waited for her son's return longer than Ray had assumed. In the nepwsaper clipping (the top of this post) we can see he exprcted to be home after the 12th of May. He was actually demobilized on 22 May 1919.

Soon after he came back from the war, the family celebrated John Raymond's wedding. On 25 June (5), he married Miss Cora Velma Cave (b. 7 March 1896, Collin, Texas/d. 28 Feb. 1971).

Raymond, the son of Mort and Lillie worked as the Postmaster in Princeton. On 2 April 1930, Ray, Velma and their three children Genevieve (b. 1923), Robert Olan (b. 1924), and James Couts (b. 1930) were recorded in Princeton by a Census clerk (6).

Here is John Raymond's WW2 draft registration (7).

Two years later, on 31 July 1944, Mr. Mort Couts Gantt passed away.

Clipping source: Andrews, C. C. The Celina Record (Celina, Tex.), Vol. 43, No. 6, Ed. 1 Thursday, August 3, 1944, newspaper, August 3, 1944; Celina, Texas. Mrs. W H Moseley (Wendel Holmes Moseley) mentioned in the clipping was Raymond's sister Ruth Marguerite (b. 22 March 1910, Princeton, Collin, TX/d. 4 August 1985, Collin, TX).

Other children of Mort Couts Gantt were

  • Mrs. Ben Sheperd - Jennie Mae Gantt (b. 1892, Texas/d. 27 August 1972, Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas). Ben D and Jennie married on 27 June 1909 (8)
  • Mrs. George Anglin - Vida Ann Gantt (b. 26 July 1900, Collin, TX/d. 14 Oct. 1969, Paducah, Cottle, Texas). George and Vida married on 2 Nov. 1924 (9)
  • Mrs. R R Littrell (Raymond Ray Littrell) - Irma Florence Gantt (b. 4 Feb. 1903, Texas/d. 15 Sept. 1993, Weston, Collin, Texas)
  • Anitta Corine Gantt (b. 11 feb 1917, Collin, TX/d. 19 Feb. 2006, Princeton, Collin, TX) married Harry Welch Mack (b. 4 Nov. 1915/d. 15 Sept. 1969)
  • E L (Elburn Lloyd) Gantt (b. 23 April 1905, Princeton, Collin, TX/d. 1988, Dallas, Dallas, TX - Princeton Public School Superintendent. He married Miss Velma Cleo Burt
  • Walter B Wilson Gantt (b. 19 June 1907, Princeton, Collin, TX/d. 24 March 1970, McKinney, Collin, Texas), buisnessman - onion and cotton dealer - married Mary Allie West

Other persons mentioned in the clipping

  • Mort's brother Ed (Edward C) Gantt (b. 9 August 1867, Terrell, Kaufman, Texas/d. 20 July 1949, Kaufman County, TX). His wife was Miss Janaramie Isadora Patton.
  • Dinnis (Dennis Ivan) Vinzant 23 August 1906/d. 22 June 1976, Wichita, TX), Midwestern State University basketball coach - he was married to Miss Mae D Shepherd, teacher of English, the daughter of Jennie Mae Gantt and Ben Shepherd.
  • Mrs. Henry Mack ? I guess a realtive of Harry Welch Mack
John Raymond Gantt lived 78 years and eleven months and thirteen days. He passed away due to cardiac arrest on 13 May 1973.

To sum up, it seems very likely that it is not a coincidence - two men of the same names - John Raymond Gantt mentioned at the beginning of this article and 14 years older John Raymond Gantt of Princeton. I wish I could find the family line which connects them (and us to the Postmaster of Princeton, TX).

Leffel Last Gant

Leffel Last Gant was the third son and the sixth child of John Lee Gant and Rachel Clementine Howard. He came to this world on 14 April 1903 in Plano, Collin, Texas.

22-year-old Leffel married on 21 Feb. 1925. His spouse was Miss Ollie Olivia Standley (b. 21 Dec. 1899, Groveton, Trinity, Texas). She was the daughter of Mr. Henry D. Standley and Miss Mary Ellen Tull.

At first, the newlyweds moved on the family farm in Plano, TX.

There is a record of the sale Leffel advertised in The Plano Star-Courier (1 Sept. 1922), as we can see he lived at Road No.1 then.

By 1930, Leffel and Ollie relocated to Dallas where Leffel started an auto repair shop.

I have also found the records of Leffel's address and work in the old Dallas City Directories.

Leffel's house does not exist anymore. There is an apartment complex where his auto repair shop used to be.

Leffel and Ollie had four children two boys and two girls. The youngest child Leffel Last Jr. was born on 22 Dec. 1931. The baby seemed to be healthy and developed properly. Till his fifth month came. Suddenly he got sick and his system did not accept milk or any special kind of formula. Sadly, for eleven days little Leffel suffered from infectious diarrhea. Finally, the carers tried to feed little Leffel with goat's milk - with a positive result. However, the baby's body had been highly dehydrated and very weakened. Leffel Last Junior passed on 18 June 1932 due to hyperpyrexia (very high fever) and convulsion (9). He was buried at Plano Mutual Cemetery.

Uncle Leffel Sr. is remembered as a family man, caring father and relative. He frequently organized family dinners enjoyed by everybody. Among others, he also helped his youngest nephew to make an "Edison machine" for a school science fair.

His nephews also remember the little spider ringtail monkey which their uncle had in the 50s. The man seemed to be the only one who could handle the pet best. Uncle Leffel sometimes carried the monkey on his shoulder. One of the nephews recalls that their uncle took the animal to the State Fair where people found the monkey quite curious as the pet could interact with people too. As I was told by uncle Leffel's daughter, Mrs. Rachel B., the monkey was called Seal and the animal was given to Mr. Leffel by his son.

Leffel's wife Ollie passed on 13 Nov. 1972.

Leffel Last Gant remarried sometime later. His second wife was a cousin Georgia Lou (Gant) Mayes (b. 23 August 1895, Plano, Collin, TX), the daughter of Andrew Morgan Gant and Nannie Ann Gunter. The marriage did not last long as Georgia died on 28 Dec. 1973.

Leffel Last Gant lived 73 years. He passed away about a month before his 74th birthday. Both Leffel and Ollie found their resting place at the Plano Mutual Cemetery.

John Bankhead Magruder And Our Kins

John Bankhead Magruder, the US and Confederate Army man, is another historic figure whom I learned about when in the USA. He is one of our rather distant relations/family tree branches.
The Mgruders were of the Scottish origin, and their name was originally McGregor.

How are we related to Mr. Magruder?

Indirectly, via Miss Evalyn (Magruder) Angel. John B. Magruder is Evalyn's 4th cousin once removed.

Here is the connection

John Bankhead Magruder
his father Thomas Magruder (b. about 1779, Prince George's County, Maryland/d. about 1830, Caroline County, Virginia), son of George Fraser Magruder and Eleanor Bowie of Maryland, a lawyer. On  22 June 1797, Thomas married Miss Elizabeth Bankhead (b. 1778/d. 1849), daughter of Mr. James Bankhead.

his sister Susannah Bowie (Magruder) Magruder (b. about 1765/d. about 1815) - in about 1788 she married her second cousin Dr. Jeffrey Magruder (b. 20 April 1762, Frederick, Frederick, Maryland/d. 31 Oct. 1803, Springfield, Montgomery, Maryland). Sausannah's and Jeffrey's grandfathers were brothers.

Charles worked as an abstractor, in a titles and deeds office. He made summaries of various documents. He lived with Evelyn and their son in Justice Precinct 1, Edna town, Jackson County, Texas.

An interesting thing is that despite the Census record mentioned above, the entire family of Charles' was recorded on 16 June 1900 as the dwellers of the same household in Edna.

Household

Charles Angle, Head, Male, age 27, born Tennessee
Evalyn Angle, Wife, Female, age 24, born Texas
Magruder Lee Angle, Son, Male age 6, born Texas

Unfortunately, the marriage of Charles and Evalyn did not survive.  However, Charles Thomas Angel remarried on 18 March 1907 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. His second wife was Miss Alice Evelyn Coleman (b. 5 Dec. 1879, Texana, Jackson County, TX/d. 24 Oct. 1967, Houston, TX).

Wintersmith Lake, Ada, Oklahoma

As I have been told by Charles' descendant, Charlie's first wife's father allegedly made our man leave the area and told him never to be back.

Charles T. and Alice left Texas and settled in Ada, Ward 1, Oklahoma (1). Ada worked as a seamstress (2). Despite Mr. Magruder's alleged warning, Charles and family came back to Texas in 1918 as the last of their six children Elma Lorraine was born on 8 Nov. 1918 in Palacios, Matagorda, Texas. The reason of their return was most probably a family member's funeral.

Dr. Andrew Benjamin Angel was Charles' cousin once removed. Mrs. A. B. Angel mentioned in the news was Florence D Charlton who died on 29 August 1918. Besides the sad family circumstances,  Charles might have assumed it was long enough after the divorce-related life turbulences, and he did not expect any more problems connected with that.

Sadly, Charles was imprisoned. How come? I have no idea. A family story remembered by our aunt Lula tells about a male relative who was accused of stealing a horse and put in prison. As a result of that, the man died by hanging. It seems that could be our Charlie who took his life in the same way (3). Did it happen in the Dallas prison? Regrettably, Aunt Lula is long time gone, so she cannot tell us more about the unfortunate man.

A message from Jill Magruder Gatwood:

" Just one correction; the Magruders did come from Scotland but were unrelated to the McGregors. We descend from the McGruthers and McGrouthers. We Magruders have battled about this for years and finally proved it with DNA. You dont have to credit me. The first Magruder to America was Alexander Magruder who was a POW from the Cromwell wars in Scotland. He came to Maryland in about 1650 as an indentured servant. Practically every Magruder in America is descended from him."

Thank you for the information, Jill.

Col. William Preston And His Kins

Watching a documentary telling about a particular period of this land's history, I thought I would research some names mentioned in the program (meaning the ancestry and any family connections between them as well). As I had already learned, many of the New World early settlers were related in one way or another.

I need to mention that since I have completed my elementary and higher education in Europe, the history classes which I attended did not provide detailed information on the history of the US. That is why I am not familiar with some names or facts which may be obvious to somebody else, educated in this country. However, during my ancestry research, I enjoy learning some bits and pieces regarding particular persons, the history of Texas and the USA too.

Anyway, here is what I found out.

William Preston (b. 25 Dec. 1729, Newtown-Limavady, Donegal, Ireland), politician and the militia Colonel (American Revolutionary War), the son of John Preston and Elizabeth Patton, was related to a few generals and other higher rank Army officers.

1. He was the maternal grandfather of John Buchanan Floyd.

William Preston + wife Susanna Smith (b. 23 Jan. 1740, Hanover County, Province of Virginia/d. 19 June 1823, Smithfield Plantation, Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia)

Smithfield Plantation

their daughter Letitia (Preston) Floyd (b. 29 Sept. 1776, Smithfield Plantation, Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia/d. 12 Dec. 1852, Burkes Garden, Tazewell County, Virginia) - on 13 May 1804 she married Mr. John Floyd (b. 24 April 1783, Floyds Station, Jefferson County, Virginia {present Bullitt County, Kentucky}/d. 16 August 1837, Sweet Springs, Monroe County, Virginia {West Virginia} - a politician, an honorary member of the Philadelphia Medical Society, Philadelphia Medical Lyceum and Dickinson College graduate, Brigadier general - Virginia State Militia/ US Army, 25th Governor of Virginia (1830-1834). John was the son of James John Floyd, Kentucky Militia Colonel, and Jane Buchanan

her son John Buchanan Floyd (b. 1 June 1806, Smithfield Plantation, Montgomery, Virginia/d. 26 August 1863, Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia) - 31st Governor of Virginia (1857-1860), Brigadier general in Confederate Army, 24th US Secretary of War (1849-1852)

2. W. Preston was a brother of a great-grandmother of John Cabell Breckinridge

William Preston

his sister Letitia (Preston) Breckinridge (b. about 1729, Ireland/d. March 1797, Fayette County, Kentucky) - in about 1752 she married Mr. Robert Preston Breckinridge, son of Alexander Breckinridge and Jane Preston. Robert was born about 1720, probably in Ireland/died in about 1773, Botetourt County, Province of Virginia. He was Virginia militia Captain (the French-Indian War), later Colonel (the Revolutionary War)

her son John Breckinridge (b. 2 Dec. 1760, Staunton, Augusta County, Province of Virginia/d. 14 Dec. 1806, Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky) - a lawyer and politician, 5th US Attorney General (1805-1806) - married Miss Mary Hopkins Cabell (b. 22 Feb. 1769, Buckingham County, Province of Virginia/d. 26 March 1858, Louisville, Jefferson County, Virginia) on 28 June 1875

his son Joseph Cabell Breckinridge (b. 24 July 1788, the Glebe, Albemarle County, Virginia/d. 1 Sept. 1823, Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky) - a lawyer, politician and a soldier. Major of the US Army, 12th Speaker of the Kentucky House of  Representatives (1817-1819), 13th Secretary of the Kentucky State (1820-1823) - his wife was Miss Mary Clay Smith whom she married on 11 May 1811 in Fayette County, Kentucky

his son John Cabell Breckinridge (b. 16 Jan. 1821, Cabell's Dale, Fayette County, Kentucky /d. 17 May 1785, Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky)  - 14th Vice President of the US (1857-1861), 5th Secretary of War of the Confederate States (1865), Major general of the Confederate Army

3. He is a  great-grandfather of Joseph Cabell Breckinridge Sr.

William Preston
his son Francis Smith Preston (b. 2 August 1765, Greenfield, Botetourt County, Province of Virginia/d. 26 May 1836, Columbia, Richmond District, SC) - a lawyer and a politician as well, Virginia State militia Colonel (war of 1812) + wife Sarah Buchanan Campbell (b. 21 April 1778, Virginia/d. 23 July 1846, Virginia). Her father was General William Campbell (Revolutionary War)

his daughter Ann Sophonisba (Preston) Breckinridge (b. 9 April 1803, Salt Works, Abingdon, Washington County, Virginia/d. 20 Dec. 1844, Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland) married Robert Jefferson Breckinridge Sr. (b. 8 March 1800, Cabell's Dale Estate, Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky/d. 27 Dec. 1871, Danville, Boyle County, Kentucky) - politician, Presbyterian Church minister

her son Joseph Cabell Breckinridge (b. 14 Jan. 1842, Baltimore, Maryland/d. 1920, Washington D.C.) - Brigadier general and Inspector General of the US Army

How are we related to Col. William Preston?

Indirectly, via Elizabeth Margaret (Patton) Crockett, the wife of Davy Crockett.

William Preston

his mother Elizabeth (Patton) Preston (b. 25 Dec. 1700, Newton-Limavady, County Derry, Ulster, Ireland/d. 25 Dec. 1776, Amherst County, Virginia)

her brother William Patton (b. about 1690, Newton-Limavady, County Derry, Ulster, Ireland/d. 5 Sept. 1742, Marlborough, Chester, Pennsylvania) + wife Mary Byrne (b. about 1692, Ireland/d. Chester County, Pennsylvania)

I have already described the line which goes from the above William Patton in the article

"From George Smith Patton Jr. to Our Great-Great-Grandfather"

⇒ click on the linked post title to see there how this line goes straight to our great-great-grandfather Jacob Rippy Gant.

Opal Orreon McIntosh

The post is dedicated to our aunt Opal Orreon McIntosh.

She was born on 5 Feb. 1911 in Marshall, Harrison, Texas to Samuel Hollie McIntosh and Ethel B. Lollar. The girl was the couple's first child.

Nine years later, the Census recorded Opal and the family in Justice Precinct 6, Harrison, Texas.

There is an error in the above record. Opal's sibling age 3 was not a girl Vernona, but a boy Samuel Vernon (b. 4 Dec. 1916).

Opal Orreon completed 8 years of elementary school education. Sgot married when she was 16. Her spouse was Mr. Samuel Francis Gulley (b. 20 March 1902 in Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas).

The first Texas English-language newspaper was published in Nacogdoches in 1820

He was the son of Samuel Gulley and Elizabeth Reed.

Gulley and Opal Mcintosh, 05 May 1928; citing Marriage, citing Harrison, Texas, United States, Texas State Library, Archives Division, and various Texas county clerks; FHL microfilm 1,405,523.

Sam ran a farm. At the beginning of their marriage, the spouses lived with their children in Harrison County, TX not far from the place where Opal's parents had their farm and house (1).

In 1940 Opal, Sam and their 3 children Sam Lloyd, Gloria Gladys, Bobby Glynn and Sam's mother Lizzie lived in a different place at Justice Precinct 3. However, generally, it was still the same area, Harrison, Texas (2). Opal and Sam had another daughter named Viola (b. 2 August 1932). The girl probably died before 1940 since she was not recorded during that year's Census.

Aunt Opal passed away two years later, on 4 January 1942. I do not know what was the cause of her death.

In his early 50s, Samuel worked as an electric helper with REA - Rural Electrification Administration. He died from an electric shock on 5 Jan 1954 (3).

Regrettably, we neither have any photographs of aunt Opal's nor her immediate family.
