From George Smith Patton Jr. to Our Great-Great-Grandfather

Here is the family tree branch which leads us (indirectly) to Mr. George Smith Patton Jr. According to the MyHeritage Report, the person who connects us to him is Elizabeth Margaret Crockett (nee Patton). G. S. Patton Jr. was her sixth cousin twice removed.

While preparing the post, I read about gen. George Patton and watched the movie "Patton" (made in 1970) as well, just to learn more about the man.

⇒ his father George Smith Patton II (b. 30 Sept. 1856, Charleston, Kanawha, Virginia/d. 10 June 1927, Lake Vineyard Ranch, LA, California) - an attorney, Mayor of San Marino, California for many years.

⇒ his father George Smith Patton (b. 26 June 1833, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia/d. 25 Sept. 1864, Winchester, Virginia). He was a colonel, commanded 22nd Virginia Infantry during the Civil War.

⇒ his father John Mercer Patton (b. 10 August 1797, Fredericksburg, Virginia/d. 29 Oct. 1858, Richmond, Virginia) - a lawyer and politician, governor of Virginia (a short time in 1841). He represented two Virginia districts in the US House of Representatives.

⇒ his father Robert William Patton Sr. (b. 24 Sept. 1750, Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland/d. 3 No. 1828, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Virginia) - emigrated with his parents and siblings from Scotland to Virginia. Robert married Anne Gordon Mercer who was born ≈ 1765 in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

Robert married Miss Rebecca Cathey in Rowan County, NC ≈ 1777. They had eight children. Robert served in the Revolutionary War.

And here we are in Texas. In 1853, Elizabeth relocated with her husband David to Granbury in Texas.

⇒ his daughter Mary (Crockett) Travis (b. ≈ 1787, Fentress County, Tennessee/d. ≈ 1860, Travisville, Fentress County/present Pickett County, Tennessee) married William Travis in in about 1807 in Kentucky.

⇒ her husband William B Travis (b. ≈ 1783, Maryland/d. ≈ 1858, Travisville, Fentress County/present Pickett County, Tennessee). William was a son of William Barret Crockett's (the Alamo defender's) cousin. He lived with his wife in District 7, Fentress County Tennessee.

William and Hannah's parents were Thomas Travis and Hannah Hutchins. They married on 20 Feb. 1774 in Baltimore, Maryland. On 27 July 1806, Hannah married Mr. Edward Solomon Long, the son of  Edward Solomon Long Sr. and catherine Mary Julian.

In 1832, Elizabeth married Mr. Joel Perrin Blair (b. 1807, Tennessee) , a farmer. In 1850, the couple had four children and lived in Illinois, Washington County, Arkansas (1). Ten years later, Elizabeth and Joel lived in Center Township, Doniphan, Kansas with their oldest son William and youngest daughter Jennie. William worked as a steamboat pilot (2).

The Census of 1870, recorded that Elizabeth lived with her husband only. William had already married and lived with his wife Laura and the youngest sister Jennie in a house next to their parents (3). Elizabeth died between 1870 and 1875 as the next Census informs that in 1875 Joel lived on his own (4).

Here we get to Texas again.

On 25 Sept. 1875 in Lamar County, TX, Jennie married James Gasham Dudley, a lawyer. He was born in 1948 in Missouri to James A and Parmelia Dudley (5).
Five years after the wedding, Jennie and James lived with their two children Frederick and Charles, and James' mother at Ward 2, Lamar, TX (6).

Jennie lived for 47 years. She passed on 2 Oct. 1896 and was buried et the Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, TX.

⇒ her daughter Ethel Blair (Dudley) Maddox (20 March 1887, Paris, Lamar, TX/d. 8 Nov. 1957, Paris, Lamar, TX)

Ethel got married at the age of 24. The ceremony took place on 18 April 1911 in Lamar, TX (7). Her husband was Clarence Witherspoon Maddox, the son of  Thomas Frederick Maddox and Amanda Lee Nance. Unfortunately, I have not found much more about Ethel, her husband and the family.
Ethel Maddox passed on 8 Nov. 1957 (8).

⇒ her daughter Clare (Maddox) Fowler (b. 1 June 1923, Antlers, Pushmataha, Oklahoma/d. 24 Oct. 1971, Dallas, Dallas, TX)

Clare lived with her parents (and at least one sibling) in Pushmataha, Oklahoma. Oklahoma school records from 1934 to 1943 list Clare's school enrollments (9). She became a scholteacher.
Claire got married on 8 March 1949 in Paris, TX. Her spouse was Bert L Fowler.  Clare passed in Baylor Hospital in Dallas on 24 Oct. 1971. She was 48 when she died. (10)

Some of the boarders mentioned in the record were related to the Baileys. William W Chaddick and the Chaddick family was distantly related to Forman and Howard families as well.
Albert A Angle was Albert Abner Angle (b. 13 Oct. 1864 in Tennessee). His parents were Marcus Lafayette Anglea and Mammie Erena Jones. Albert was a first cousin once removed of Ideller bailey's grandmother.

Two years after the Census, J D Brent - James Devit Brent (b. 1 Oct. 1878 in Plano, TX), the son of James Monroe Brent and Rebecca Florence Hansel, became the husband of Marie's mother's second cousin Roxie L. Brown.

Marie died in All Saints Hospital on 19 Jan 1949 in Fort Worth, Tarrant, TX. She was 51 years 2 month and 10 days on the day of her death (13).

Richard R Chaddick mentioned in the above Census record was a brother of William Chaddick Sr., our William Hewett's uncle.

When William's father was to join the Confederacy Army, William junior was just a boy in his early teens. However, he decided to replace his father and enlisted instead of him. Thanks to that the family was not left without their main supporter and provider - the father. William Hewett served in the army for four years.

William H's first wife was Martha E Marcellus, daughter of Thomas Marcellus and Sarah Ann Moore. The marriage took place in Louisiana on 7 October 1865. The newlyweds were both 18 on the day of their wedding. Martha (called Mattie) and William H had five children - two sons and three daughters. The family moved to Texas in November 1872. At first, they settled at the area of the nowadays city of Parker, William was a farmer. Five years later, they all moved to Plano and William H. became a merchant.

Unfortunately, Martha passed away at the age of 33, on 14 Dec. 1880. In the next year, the great fire of Plano destroyed also William's business.

On 30 August 1880, William married again. His second spouse was Miss Ruth Cochran (nee Forman), the daughter of William M Forman II and Lucettie Abigail Howard (nee Thomas). Abigail's first husband was Jarrot Howard, our great-great-grandfather. Anyway, on the wedding day, Ruth was 23 and William was 34.

14 Sept. 1885 - wedding in the family - Lillie Forman, daughter of Mary and William Hewett's married Clint Forman, the son of Joseph Forman and Elizabeth Hughes (1). According to the record, Lillie was thirteen on the day of her marraige. Her spouse was nine years older.

Two years later, on 7 January, William's second oldest son Eugene N. married Mary Andrews.

1987 brought another wedding. On 7 January, Eugene, son of Martha and William H's, married Miss Mary Andrews.

William Hewett was a Christian man of a grand character. When still in Louisiana, he joined the Methodist church. After the marriage with Ruth, he became a follower of the Plano Christian Church.
Ruth and William had seven children - two daughters and five sons.

Eugene Chaddick, age 30, mentioned above, was William and his first wife's son. Eugene's wife passed away not long before the Census, between 1898 and 1900.

The record says that Ruth had nine children and seven of them was alive at the time in July 1900.
She had had three children with her first husband Ammon Cochran, only one girl, named Lillie Mae (born in 1876) survived. Lillie got married in 1894. On 6 July 1900 she had already lived with her husband Henry L Bradshaw (2).

In 1902, tragedy touched the family. William's oldest son, William T was found dead. The article contains a mistake, regarding the first letter of William Jr.'s middle name.

The police investigation continued. Some employees of The Missouri, Kentucky and Texas Railroad Company were suspected of having some connection with the tragic death of William Hewett's son. The father filed a lawsuit against the Railroad Company.

How it all ended, whether the defendants were found innocent or guilty, I do knot know. I have found no more information on the tragic case.

On 11 Dec. in the same year 1904, a much happier event took place - William Hewett Jr. married Miss Ruby Lee Gregory (3).

Two years later, on 28 November 1906, Earl F, William's second oldest son, married Miss Lillie Jennie Carpenter, daughter of John Henry Carpenter and M I Coke.

Somehow, during the 1910 Census only William Hewett Sr. and his wife were registered as the dwellers of their household. It seems strange as some of their children were still not married. Maybe they were not at home then?

At the beginning of 1914, Ruth's health deterorated.

At the same time, there was an Automobile Contest organized by the Whitten-Sandifer Company. The contestants were ladies of the Plano society, the stake was a Ford automobile. The contest participants did not have to do anything - it was the citizens of Plano who voted for their favorite lady and chose the winner at the same time. The end of the contest + its results were to be announced on 24 December.

Ruth Chaddick took part in the competition as well. At first, I though it was William Hewett's daughter, but next, looking through the old newpspers, I noticed that the same Ruth Chaddick played to win a Ford also years later, when Ruth the younger, could have possibly been married. Anyway, it seems it was an annual contest. I cannot tell you who won the 1914 edition as I did not find the name of the lucky lady in the newspapers printed in December.

William Hewett was a respectful person of the Plano society. He served as a member of the Plano Council for quite a few years.

James P Chaddick, born in 1845 in Mississippi, was the oldest child in the family of William Monroe Chaddick and Elizabeth Gordon.

When the school year ended in 1919, the Chaddicks celebrated the high school graduation of Ora, the youngest daughter in the family. She graduted from the Plano High School.

About a year later, William Hewett's heart failed. He had heart surgery and died from mitral disease on 10 March 1920. William H. was buried at the Plano Cemetery on the next day.

As for Ruth and the children of William Hewett Sr.'s;

Earl F Chaddick, the second son of Ruth and William's, was a farmer. He lived with his wife Lillie at R#7, Box 103 in Forth Worth. He was medium height and medium built, his eyes were blue and his hair was light. (5) Earl died from TB which he had suffered from for two years and six months. (6)

Clyde Chaddick, the third son of Ruth and William Hewett's was 5 feet 3 inches tall, he had black hair and brown eyes. He must have married after 1917. On 6 June 1917,  the day of his WW1 draft registration, he was still single. At that time Clyde worked as an automobile dealer at the Chaddick Parlore Inc. in Corpus Cristi, TX.  (7)

During WW1, he served in CMC Repair Shop 304 at Fort Sam, Houston, Texas. Clyde Chaddick was appointed Private 1 class on 31 July 1918, and later was promoted to Sergeant (on 24 Sept. 1918). When the war ended, Clyde was honorably discharged on 11 Jan. 1919, during demobilization. (8)
Years later, the man married Rosina Ledbetter. Their first child Mary Lou was born in 1930. (9) The family of Clyde's lived at 523 W. Elsmere, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. The house, built in 1923, still exists. Clyde worked for Lincoln national Life Insurance Co. as an insurance agent. (10)
He died at the age of 55, on 21 August 1943, due to hypertnesion and coronary occlusion. (11)

Ruth Brent, the oldest daughter of Ruth and William's, worked as a private duty practical nurse. Her husband John Beaty passed in 1959 (12). At the end of her life, Ruth lived in a nursing home in Denton where she died due to cardiovascular disease on 22 Oct. 1976. (13)

Ora Thompson, Ruth's younger sister, lived with her husband in Plano. She passed away at the age of 70, on 15 November 1965. (14)

I have not found much info on Ruth and William's fourth son Mark Chaddick. He was born 20 Feb. 1898 and he helped his father run the farm. The WW1 registration record also says that Mark was short, medium built, had brown eyes and dark hair. (15)

Kruger L Chaddick was the youngest son of Ruth and William's. He worked as a wire maker at Texas Wire & Cable Company. Kruger's first wife Lennie died from TB on 27 Nov. 1927 (16). The man remarried two years later on the day 8 June. His second wife was Lillian Largent Mallow (17). Kruger Chaddick passed at the age of 61 in his home which was at 800 15th Street in Plano. On 31 Jan. 1962 his heart stopped (18).

Ruth Chaddick, the second wife of William Hewett's died before WW2 started, on 1 July 1939 (19).

William T was a saddler. He probably married Miss Rebecca Bumpass on 19 November 1887.

Not much is known about Eugene Chaddick, William T's younger brother. Maybe he remarried ? Anyway, in 1900, he lived in Justice Precinct 5, between Dallas/McKinney Rd. and Muddy Creek in Collin County Texas (20). Ten years later, he lived with his 12-year-old son Vergennes in Nocona, Montague, Texas (21).

Lily Forman, Eugene's younger sister, lived not far from her brother (in 1900). Together with her husband Clint and son Ray, they dwelled two houses away from the house of Eugene's. Lilly and Clint's home was recorded during the Census as house #359, Eugene's place was #361(22). Lily outlived her husband who died in 1918 (23). She left this world years later in Lamar, TX on 9 Dec. 1944 (24).

Sallie Elizabeth Taylor was two years younger than Lily. I can only tell you about her that in 1900 she lived with her husband T C Taylor and four children in Justice Precinct 5 (west Plano) (25). Ten years later, the couple had two sons more and they had already moved to Justice Precinct 2 in San Saba, Texas (26).

It seems that in 1900, the siblings lived close two each other. Genoa lived with her husband at his mother's house which was also in Justice P. #5 in Plano (27). Meroney Forman was a dairy farmer. Probably, Genoa and Meroney had no children. Genoa's spouse passed in 1945 due to cardiac failure (28). She died five years later, on 14 Sept. 1949, from liver damage (cirrhosis) (29).
